Post-quantum cryptography (PQC) is classical cryptography designed to remain secure against both today’s computers and future quantum computers. Bitcoin does not use PQC yet. Its main exposure is the public-key signature system—ECDSA and Schnorr—which a sufficiently capable quantum computer could attack to derive private keys and forge transactions. A practical Bitcoin response would require a new quantum-resistant signature path, wallet and custody support, a migration period, and a policy for coins that remain in legacy outputs.
The timing is uncertain: no reliable date exists for a cryptographically relevant quantum computer. Bitcoin users can nevertheless reduce long-term exposure now by avoiding public-key reuse and by moving funds to safer output types when an accepted migration becomes available.
What post-quantum cryptography means
PQC is a category of algorithms that run on ordinary computers but are designed around mathematical problems that are not known to be efficiently solvable by either classical or quantum machines. It is therefore different from quantum key distribution, which uses specialised quantum communication equipment. PQC is software and protocol cryptography; it can be deployed in conventional servers, devices and blockchains.

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) finalized its first three PQC standards in 2024. ML-KEM is a key-encapsulation mechanism for establishing shared secrets, while ML-DSA and SLH-DSA are digital-signature standards. A Bitcoin transaction needs a signature scheme, so ML-DSA or SLH-DSA are the directly relevant members of that set. ML-KEM could matter to other encrypted communications around Bitcoin, but it does not by itself authorize a coin spend.

NIST’s migration guidance says organizations should begin applying the standards while systems are being moved to quantum-resistant cryptography. That advice reflects long lead times for software, hardware, certificates, wallets and operational procedures—not a claim that a quantum computer capable of breaking Bitcoin exists today.
Could a quantum computer break Bitcoin?
Bitcoin’s consensus rules rely on public-key signatures to prove that a spender controls a private key. ECDSA is used by many older output types, and Schnorr signatures are used by newer designs. Their security depends on elliptic-curve problems that a sufficiently powerful, fault-tolerant quantum computer could attack with a quantum algorithm. An attacker who recovered a private key could create a valid-looking spend.
The most important distinction is whether a coin’s public key is already visible. Some output designs commit to or hash a public key and reveal the key only when the owner spends. That can reduce the time available for an attack before a transaction is confirmed. Once a public key has been revealed—through spending, address reuse or an output that carries the key directly—the attacker has a more direct target.
This does not make hashed addresses quantum-proof. The signature produced when the coin is spent still uses a vulnerable algorithm unless the output’s rules specify a quantum-resistant signature. Hashing buys exposure time; it does not replace the underlying signature security.
Why address reuse increases exposure
Reusing an address can leave a public key exposed after the first spend and can make future balances associated with that key easier to target. Fresh addresses limit how long any one public key remains relevant and reduce the amount of value controlled by an exposed key. This is a risk-reduction practice, not a guarantee against a future quantum attack.
What “harvest now, decrypt later” means here
NIST warns that adversaries can collect encrypted data today and try to decrypt it later when quantum capabilities improve. That warning primarily concerns long-lived confidentiality. Bitcoin signatures are a different problem: an attacker would need a private key and an opportunity to submit a conflicting transaction. The common lesson is the same—systems with long replacement cycles should start migration before a crisis, because wallets, exchanges, hardware and consensus software cannot all change instantly.

When will Bitcoin need to become quantum-safe?
There is no established “Q-day” for Bitcoin. The relevant threshold is a cryptographically relevant quantum computer: one powerful and reliable enough to derive private keys from the public keys used by Bitcoin, within a time that allows an attacker to spend the coins. Estimates of when such a machine might exist are uncertain and should be treated as forecasts, not deadlines.

Coins with an already exposed public key have a shorter warning window than coins whose key remains hidden behind a hash or commitment. Long-lived wallets, dormant holdings and reused addresses deserve particular attention because an owner may not be watching the chain when a new capability appears.
Waiting for a precise year would be a poor migration strategy. A defensible plan sets milestones based on software readiness, standards maturity, wallet adoption and the time needed for users to move funds, then adjusts those milestones as the technical outlook changes.
What Bitcoin would have to change
A complete response is more than choosing a new algorithm. Bitcoin would need a consensus-recognized way to express a quantum-resistant public key and signature, plus an operational process for moving existing balances.
1. Prepare and measure exposure
Developers and service operators would first inventory the output types in use, identify public-key reuse and determine which balances already have an exposed key. Wallets can make the safer behavior the default by generating fresh addresses, warning before reuse and clearly identifying the cryptographic type of each output. Custodians would need the same inventory for cold storage, deposits and withdrawal systems.

2. Add a quantum-resistant spending path
Bitcoin could introduce a new output or witness version whose spending rules verify a selected PQ signature. The design would specify the public-key encoding, signature encoding, hashing and witness structure, script behavior, malleability rules, standardness policy and activation method.
NIST’s standards provide candidate primitives and a migration framework, but they do not choose Bitcoin’s transaction format. Bitcoin engineers would have to evaluate:
- Classical and quantum security level appropriate for the value and lifetime of a coin.
- Public-key and signature size, including their effect on transaction fees and block space.
- Signature-verification cost for miners and every validating node.
- Implementation quality, independent audits and resistance to side-channel failures.
- Support in software wallets, hardware signing devices, exchanges and recovery tools.
- How the output reveals or hides public keys and how key rotation works.
Large signatures could make a quantum-safe transaction substantially heavier than a familiar one. That affects fee estimation, block capacity and hardware memory. Conversely, a compact scheme with immature implementations could create unacceptable security or reliability risk. The choice is therefore a system design decision, not a simple contest for the smallest signature.
3. Build wallet, custody and recovery support
Wallets would need to generate the new address format, display its security properties, sign the new witness data and restore keys from backups. Exchanges and payment processors would need deposit detection, withdrawal support, fee calculation and policy controls. Hardware devices would need firmware and secure-element changes, while recovery documentation would have to explain the new key material and any compatibility limits.
Users should be able to see whether a balance is in a legacy output, a key-hiding output or a PQ-signature output. Mixing these categories in a single account without clear labels would make migration errors more likely.
4. Give users a migration window
After activation, wallets could encourage or automatically construct transactions that move funds from legacy outputs into the new type. A long transition is important because coins are held by individuals, businesses, exchanges, multisignature arrangements and offline backups with different update schedules. Fees, congestion and lost keys also mean that not every balance can move immediately.

Migration guidance should distinguish a normal voluntary transfer from an emergency transfer after a quantum capability appears. In the latter case, exposed-key coins could compete for confirmation with an attacker, so waiting until the threat is obvious would be dangerous.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →5. Decide what happens to legacy outputs
The community would eventually need a policy for coins that remain in old output types. Options could include leaving legacy signatures valid indefinitely, restricting them after a date, or introducing conditions under which exposed-key spends are no longer accepted. Each option distributes risk differently among holders, miners, exchanges and users who cannot upgrade.
BIP 361 presents a legacy-signature sunset and migration framework as a proposal. It is not an activated rule and does not establish a Bitcoin-wide deadline. Any sunset would require broad agreement, precise consensus rules and a process for handling disputed ownership, lost keys and coins that are intentionally kept offline.
Which PQC algorithms could Bitcoin use?
The 2024 NIST standards are the clearest standardized starting point, but standardization alone does not make an algorithm suitable for Bitcoin consensus. Bitcoin would need a signature scheme with stable specifications, robust implementations and acceptable resource requirements across every validating node.
| Candidate or design choice | Role | What Bitcoin would evaluate | Status relevant to Bitcoin |
|---|---|---|---|
| ML-DSA | Post-quantum digital signatures | Security level, key and signature encoding, verification cost, transaction weight and implementation maturity | NIST standard finalized in 2024; no Bitcoin consensus integration has been activated |
| SLH-DSA | Post-quantum digital signatures based on a different design family | Security assumptions, signature and key size, signing speed, verification cost and operational suitability | NIST standard finalized in 2024; no Bitcoin consensus integration has been activated |
| ML-KEM | Key establishment, not transaction authorization | Use in encrypted services or wallet communication rather than the spend script itself | NIST standard finalized in 2024; it is not a replacement for a Bitcoin signature |
| Bitcoin-specific output format | Consensus container for whichever signature is selected | Witness rules, address encoding, fee impact, key exposure, upgrade path and wallet compatibility | Must be designed and activated by Bitcoin developers and the network; NIST does not define it |
Exact key and signature sizes, fee effects and verification benchmarks are not established by the supplied Bitcoin proposals. They should be measured against realistic transaction mixes before activation rather than inferred from an algorithm’s marketing label or security category.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWould adoption require a hard fork or a soft fork?
The answer depends on the exact consensus change. A new output or witness version can potentially be introduced as a soft fork when upgraded nodes enforce additional spending rules and older nodes remain conservative about the new form. That approach can add a new path without changing the validity of existing confirmed transactions.

However, restricting signatures that were previously valid, imposing a mandatory sunset on legacy outputs or changing the interpretation of existing scripts could require more disruptive consensus coordination and might not be safely expressible as a soft fork. The distinction is technical and must be evaluated against the proposed encoding and activation mechanism.
| Change | Likely coordination issue |
|---|---|
| Add a new quantum-resistant output or witness version | Could be designed as a soft-fork-style extension, subject to review and miner/node adoption |
| Keep all legacy signatures valid while users migrate | Requires wallet, exchange and custody upgrades but no immediate ban on old spends |
| Restrict or sunset legacy signatures | Requires explicit consensus rules, a deadline and a way to handle unconverted coins; activation method remains unsettled |
| Change existing script semantics | May create compatibility and validation risks that demand broader coordination than a new output type |
Neither BIP 360 nor BIP 361 proves that Bitcoin has selected an activation mechanism. They illustrate possible components of a migration, not a network decision.
How the main options compare

- Security: What classical and quantum security level is claimed, and which assumptions support it?
- Data footprint: How large are public keys, signatures and witnesses, and how do they affect fees and block space?
- Validation: Can every node verify signatures within acceptable CPU and memory limits?
- Operational maturity: Are implementations audited, constant-time where required, portable and available in multiple languages?
- Wallet coverage: Can users create, sign, back up and recover keys across desktop, mobile, hardware and multisignature setups?
- Exposure behavior: Does the output hide the public key until spend, and does it discourage reuse?
- Migration complexity: Can exchanges and users move funds without creating an emergency fee market or locking out older backups?
- Failure recovery: What happens if an implementation is found vulnerable or a parameter set is deprecated?
The best candidate may not be the one with the smallest signature. Bitcoin needs a scheme and output format that can be deployed, monitored, upgraded and used correctly for decades.
What Bitcoin users can do now
- Stop address reuse. Let your wallet generate a fresh receiving address for each payment and avoid consolidating funds in ways that unnecessarily expose a long-lived public key.
- Keep software current. Use wallets and custody systems that clearly document their output types and provide an upgrade path when a Bitcoin-approved PQ signature becomes available.
- Map your holdings. Identify which balances are held in legacy outputs, which public keys have appeared on-chain and which keys are stored in offline or multisignature backups.
- Protect recovery material. A migration cannot recover a lost seed or an inaccessible signing device. Maintain tested backups and document who can authorize a move for shared custody.
- Do not buy a generic “quantum-proof” product. A hardware wallet or cryptography tool is not quantum-resistant merely because its packaging uses that phrase. Compatibility must be specified by an activated Bitcoin consensus design.
- Follow formal proposals and release notes. Treat BIP 360, BIP 361 and future changes as proposals until a consensus rule is actually activated and wallet software supports it.
What is settled and what remains open
Established
- NIST finalized ML-KEM, ML-DSA and SLH-DSA in 2024 and provides migration guidance.
- Bitcoin’s ECDSA and Schnorr public-key signatures are the principal quantum exposure described by current proposals.
- Keeping a public key hidden or avoiding reuse can reduce long-exposure risk, but neither practice makes the signature algorithm quantum-resistant.
Not decided
- Which PQ signature, parameter set and Bitcoin encoding would be adopted.
- Whether a new path would activate through a soft fork, another mechanism or a combination of changes.
- How long users would have to migrate and whether legacy signatures would eventually be restricted.
- What date, if any, would define a legacy-signature sunset.
- When a quantum computer capable of attacking Bitcoin will exist.
What a realistic Bitcoin migration looks like
The least disruptive sequence is a preparation phase, followed by a new quantum-resistant output, broad wallet deployment, a measured transfer period and only then a decision about legacy outputs. Monitoring would continue throughout: developers would track cryptanalysis, implementation vulnerabilities, adoption rates, exposed-key balances and the cost of validating larger signatures.
That staged approach separates two problems that are often conflated. Key-hiding outputs can reduce exposure before PQ signatures are active; a new PQ signature path is needed to remove dependence on elliptic-curve signatures. Bitcoin becomes meaningfully quantum-resistant only when users can place funds under the new rules and the network validates those rules consistently.
