Polyphony Digital is Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Japanese game studio responsible for the Gran Turismo driving-simulation series. Founded on April 2, 1998 from Sony’s original Gran Turismo production team, it is led by Gran Turismo creator Kazunori Yamauchi. The studio develops and operates Gran Turismo software and related services, while also running competition and artificial-intelligence projects around the series.
What Polyphony Digital is
Polyphony Digital Inc. is a wholly owned software studio within Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE). Its stated business is planning and developing home-console game software and operating related services. In practical terms, that means Polyphony Digital is the developer behind Gran Turismo, rather than a publisher that merely licenses the name.
The studio is based in Japan and lists operations in Tokyo and Fukuoka. Its public company information identifies Kazunori Yamauchi as representative director and president. Polyphony Digital’s work is closely associated with PlayStation because Gran Turismo has been developed as a PlayStation driving-simulation franchise.
Is Polyphony Digital owned by Sony?
Yes. Polyphony Digital is a wholly owned Sony Interactive Entertainment studio. It is part of Sony’s first-party development structure, alongside other teams that make software for Sony platforms. The company is not an independent third-party developer that happens to make Gran Turismo; it operates inside Sony’s corporate group.

Sony’s corporate timeline records Polyphony Digital’s creation as a 1998 split-off from its Gran Turismo production team. Polyphony’s own company page gives the more specific establishment date of April 2, 1998. Those descriptions refer to the same transition: the internal team that created Gran Turismo became a separately named company within Sony.
Is Polyphony Digital the same thing as Gran Turismo?
No. Polyphony Digital is the studio; Gran Turismo is the game franchise. The distinction is similar to separating a film studio from the film series it produces. Polyphony Digital employs the developers and operates the business. Gran Turismo is the series of racing games, online services, competitive programs and related initiatives built around those games.
The close association exists because Gran Turismo has been Polyphony Digital’s defining project since the studio’s origin. A search for “who makes Gran Turismo?” therefore leads to Polyphony Digital, while a search for “what is Gran Turismo?” describes the driving-simulation series itself.
How Polyphony Digital began
Before the company had its current name, Sony had a Gran Turismo production team working on the original game. That team was separated and established as Polyphony Digital in 1998. The change gave the group a formal studio identity while keeping it within Sony’s structure.
The franchise’s creative starting point came earlier. The first Gran Turismo launched for the original PlayStation on December 22, 1997. Kazunori Yamauchi has described the project as the first plan he created when he began his career in the industry. In a PlayStation 25th-anniversary message, Yamauchi wrote: “Back in 1992, Gran Turismo was the first project plan I created out of close to 100 others I came up with when I first started my career in this industry, so it means a lot to me.”
That history explains why the studio remains identified with one long-running series rather than a broad portfolio of unrelated games. Gran Turismo began as Yamauchi’s early concept and continued as the central creative and technical focus of the team that became Polyphony Digital.

Who is Kazunori Yamauchi?
Kazunori Yamauchi is the creator of Gran Turismo and the president of Polyphony Digital. He is both the executive identified with the studio and the person credited with originating its flagship series.
Yamauchi’s role matters because Gran Turismo’s identity has remained consistent across generations: detailed cars, detailed circuits, driving physics and a strong connection between virtual and real-world motorsport. His 1992 project concept became the 1997 PlayStation game and eventually the foundation of a studio employing approximately 250 people.
What games has Polyphony Digital made?
Polyphony Digital is best known for the Gran Turismo franchise. The original game arrived in 1997, and the series continued through successive PlayStation entries before reaching Gran Turismo 7, the studio’s 2022 flagship release.
The available company and platform descriptions do not establish a separate catalog of unrelated Polyphony Digital games. It is therefore more accurate to describe the studio as a specialist developer built around Gran Turismo than to imply that it has produced a large range of distinct franchises.

What makes Gran Turismo Polyphony Digital’s specialty?
Simulation and authenticity
PlayStation describes Gran Turismo as a driving simulator built around detailed cars and tracks. Polyphony Digital’s specialty is not simply putting licensed vehicles into an arcade-style race; the series is designed around the behavior, appearance and presentation of real automobiles and circuits.
That focus affects the studio’s work at several levels: vehicle modeling, circuit environments, driving behavior, racing rules and the systems that connect all of those elements during play. The available descriptions support the series’ emphasis on simulation and detail, but they do not provide a single objective ranking against competing racing developers.

A platform for competition
Gran Turismo grew beyond a conventional console release into an organized competitive ecosystem. PlayStation identifies the FIA Gran Turismo Championships as having been established in 2018. The championships give skilled players a structured route into officially presented digital motorsport, with competition built around Gran Turismo software.
The franchise has also been associated with Gran Turismo Academy, which PlayStation describes as an expansion into real-life racing. This connection is significant because it links a home-console simulation with physical motorsport rather than treating the game as an isolated entertainment product.
An environment for AI research
Polyphony Digital also participated in the creation of Gran Turismo Sophy, a collaboration involving Sony AI, Polyphony Digital and Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony’s announcement covered Sophy’s first global release for Gran Turismo 7 in 2023.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Sophy illustrates a different side of the studio’s role. Polyphony Digital is not only delivering cars, tracks and racing events to players; it is also part of work on computer-controlled drivers and machine-learning research applied to racing. The collaboration does not mean every Gran Turismo feature is controlled by Sophy, nor does the available announcement establish a universal performance ranking for the system. It establishes the project and its 2023 global release in Gran Turismo 7.
Polyphony Digital’s size and reach
Polyphony Digital reports more than 100 million cumulative worldwide sell-through units for its PlayStation software as of June 2025. “Sell-through” refers to units sold through to customers, and the figure is cumulative across the studio’s PlayStation software rather than a claim about one individual game.
The company information page lists approximately 250 employees. That headcount is a company-reported approximation, not an independently audited total, and staffing can change over time. It nevertheless indicates that Polyphony Digital is a substantial specialist studio rather than a small team formed only for one release.

For someone encountering Polyphony Digital for the first time, Gran Turismo 7 is the clearest current example of the studio’s work: a modern Gran Turismo built for the PlayStation generation, with the detailed cars and tracks associated with the series and with the broader competitive and AI initiatives surrounding it.
The phrase “current flagship” identifies the game’s position in the studio’s catalog; it does not establish a new release date or imply that no future Gran Turismo project exists.
How the studio fits inside Sony
Polyphony Digital’s position can be understood through three layers:
- Sony Interactive Entertainment: the Sony company that owns the studio and manages the PlayStation software business.
- Polyphony Digital: the Japanese development company that plans, develops and operates Gran Turismo software and related services.
- Gran Turismo: the driving-simulation franchise, competitive ecosystem and associated initiatives delivered through that studio’s work.
This structure explains why Gran Turismo is strongly identified with PlayStation while still being developed by a named studio with its own company information, leadership and locations.

“Polyphony” is not a separate racing series
Polyphony Digital is the company name. Gran Turismo is the racing series. A Polyphony Digital announcement may concern a Gran Turismo game, an online service, a championship or an AI collaboration, but those are activities of the studio rather than separate franchises called Polyphony.

The studio was not founded before the first Gran Turismo
The original Gran Turismo released in 1997, while Polyphony Digital was established in 1998. The game was created by Sony’s production team before that team became the separately named company. Saying the studio “made Gran Turismo” is correct in the franchise’s continuing history, but the corporate timeline matters when discussing the first game’s development.
Gran Turismo is more than a boxed game
The franchise includes the console software itself, organized FIA-linked competition, the Gran Turismo Academy connection to real-world racing and the Sophy AI collaboration. These projects do not change the identity of the series; they show how Polyphony Digital has extended it into competition, motorsport and research.
Why the studio’s identity matters to players
Knowing who Polyphony Digital is helps explain the consistency of Gran Turismo across releases. The same specialist studio has remained responsible for the franchise’s direction while operating inside Sony’s first-party structure. That continuity supports a long-term approach to car and circuit detail, platform integration and services connected with the game.

It also clarifies where to look for authoritative information. Questions about the company, its locations, leadership and reported scale belong to Polyphony Digital’s corporate information. Questions about PlayStation availability and Gran Turismo features belong to PlayStation or Gran Turismo product pages. Questions about championships and Sophy belong to the announcements describing those programs.
