Playback-based CPM is the gross amount advertisers pay per 1,000 video playbacks in which at least one ad appeared. It is not a creator’s earnings per 1,000 views, and running a YouTube stream 24/7 does not establish a special CPM or guarantee that ads will appear.
What playback-based CPM measures
YouTube’s playback-based CPM measures advertiser cost against monetized playbacks: video playbacks where at least one ad impression was shown. The calculation is:
Playback-based CPM = advertiser revenue ÷ monetized playbacks × 1,000
The denominator is monetized playbacks, not all views and not individual ad impressions. A playback can count as monetized even if a viewer leaves during a pre-roll before the video itself begins, as the YouTube Analytics API explains in its metric definitions.

How CPM, playback-based CPM, and RPM differ

YouTube’s ad revenue analytics explanation illustrates the distinction with 5,000 views: 1,000 playbacks each have one ad, and 500 playbacks each have two. That produces 2,000 ad impressions but 1,500 monetized playbacks. If advertisers paid $7, CPM is $3.50 ($7 ÷ 2,000 × 1,000), while playback-based CPM is $4.67 ($7 ÷ 1,500 × 1,000). This is YouTube’s arithmetic example, not a reported rate or forecast for live streams.
What 24/7 streaming does—and does not—change
Keeping a stream live can accumulate viewing activity, but runtime alone does not determine playback-based CPM. YouTube identifies factors including viewer geography, seasonality, and the mix of ad formats. A playback may have no ad because monetization is off, no suitable ad is available, the viewer recently saw an ad, the viewer has YouTube Premium, or other eligibility and inventory factors apply.

There is no authoritative typical playback-based CPM benchmark specific to 24/7 YouTube live streams in the cited official material. A universal dollar range would therefore be misleading; results vary by channel, period, audience, and ad delivery.

How to assess your channel’s results
- Use a consistent date window. Compare like-for-like periods rather than attributing a change to 24/7 runtime alone.
- Check viewer geography. Advertising markets differ, so a shift in audience location can affect the result.
- Consider seasonality and ad formats. Advertiser demand and the mix of served formats can change over time.
- Compare monetized playbacks with total views. The share of views that actually included an ad may rise or fall independently of overall views.
- Pair playback-based CPM with RPM and estimated revenue. This separates advertiser pricing on monetized playbacks from creator-focused earnings. For API definitions and reporting details, see Google’s YouTube Analytics API content-owner reports.
Where to find live-stream analytics
YouTube’s live metrics guidance describes analytics organized by video ID and processed to remove spam. It also notes that revenue reports are not available when filtering for Live only in the documented workflow; use Live & on demand or another suitable report instead.
