NFO Viewer is a free, open-source desktop app designed to display NFO files—often text files containing ASCII art encoded with the CP437 codepage. Its preset font and encoding, automatic window sizing, and clickable hyperlinks make it more convenient for viewing this kind of file than a general text editor. The current upstream release is 2.1, with the project’s official distribution focused on Linux.
What NFO Viewer does
NFO Viewer is a purpose-built reader for NFO files, which commonly combine text and ASCII art. The project describes them as ASCII art in the CP437 codepage. That codepage matters because opening a file with an unsuitable encoding can make its line-drawing characters appear incorrectly.

Compared with a general text editor, NFO Viewer supplies a preset font and encoding for this material, adjusts its window size automatically, and makes hyperlinks in the file clickable. Those conveniences are useful when the goal is to read an NFO file as intended; it is a viewer, rather than a general-purpose text editor. Project documentation

For a Flatpak installation, Flathub lists version 2.1 by Osmo Salomaa, with x86_64 and aarch64 builds. Check your Linux distribution’s software center for the listing, or use the installation option shown on NFO Viewer on Flathub. Linux users can also check their distribution’s package repository or obtain the source through the project.
Package versions differ by platform
A distribution package can lag behind, or otherwise differ from, the current upstream release. These listings illustrate why it is worth checking the version offered by your own system:
| Platform or channel | Listed version | What the listing establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Upstream project | 2.1 | The official site’s current release listing. Project site |
| Flathub | 2.1 | Free desktop application; x86_64 and aarch64 builds listed. Flathub listing |
| Debian trixie | 2.1-1 | Debian package `nfoview`, identified as a Python program with GTK 4, Pango, Cairo, and GObject-introspection dependencies. Debian package page |
| OpenBSD 7.9 ports | 1.28.1p7 | OpenBSD’s port listing; it has dependencies including Python, GTK, PyGObject, and Cascadia Code. OpenBSD port listing |
| MacPorts | 1.23 | MacPorts listing with GTK, Python GObject, shared MIME data, and Terminus font dependencies; this does not establish a current official macOS release. MacPorts listing |
Does it work on Windows or macOS?
Windows
Do not expect a current Windows installer from the project: its repository says Windows installers are no longer built and identifies 1.23 as the latest Windows version available. Project repository
macOS
MacPorts lists NFO Viewer version 1.23, but that is evidence of a MacPorts port—not a current official macOS release from the NFO Viewer project. Check MacPorts’ own listing for availability and installation details before relying on it.

When to choose it instead of a text editor
Choose NFO Viewer when you want NFO files’ CP437 characters displayed with an appropriate preset font and encoding, and value automatic window sizing or clickable links. A text editor may suit you better if you need to edit or otherwise work with arbitrary text rather than simply view an NFO file. If you use a platform-specific package, check its listed version: the available build may not match upstream 2.1.
