Microsoft desktop virtualization means running Windows desktops or applications in virtualized environments and making them available to users locally or remotely. In Microsoft’s current cloud context, it usually refers to Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), which delivers full Windows desktops or individual apps from Azure. The term can also describe a Windows guest operating system running in a virtual machine on a physical computer.
What Microsoft desktop virtualization means
Desktop virtualization separates the desktop environment from the physical computer a person uses to access it. The environment may run in a local virtual machine, or on remote infrastructure and be delivered over a network. Microsoft’s older virtualization material uses “host” for the physical computer and “guest” for the virtualized operating system running on it; a guest desktop can appear in a window or full screen. It also describes applications presented to users as if they were installed locally. That material is historical background, not current Azure deployment guidance. Microsoft’s virtualization book explains the local host-and-guest model.
Azure Virtual Desktop: Microsoft’s cloud service
In a cloud or workplace-IT discussion, “Microsoft desktop virtualization” most often means Azure Virtual Desktop. Microsoft describes AVD as a desktop and app virtualization service running on Azure. An organization can provide a complete Windows desktop or publish selected applications for remote use. AVD supports single-session and multi-session deployments. Microsoft’s AVD overview describes the service and its capabilities.
Microsoft manages AVD’s service control plane, while customers manage the session-host virtual machines and images in their Azure subscriptions. Users connect to the desktops and apps assigned to them through Windows App or a web client. AVD uses reverse connections, so customers do not need to open inbound ports for the service. The exact operating systems, supported features, and regional availability depend on Microsoft’s current documentation and the deployment.

How Azure Virtual Desktop is organized
AVD uses a few building blocks to group computers and determine what users can access:
- Host pool: A collection of Azure virtual machines registered as session hosts.
- Application group: Defines access to either a full desktop or a logical group of applications on session hosts in a host pool.
- Workspace: The user-facing grouping through which assigned desktops and apps are presented.
Administrators can publish a full desktop or individual applications through RemoteApp. Microsoft documents management through the Azure portal, CLI, PowerShell, and REST API. See Microsoft’s AVD terminology guide for the service’s definitions.

Pooled and personal host pools
A personal host pool assigns a session host to an individual user, which suits dedicated desktop scenarios. A pooled host pool shares session-host capacity across users; multi-session designs can let multiple users share a Windows environment and may improve utilization. The right model depends on how users work, what applications they need, and the organization’s security and operational requirements.
Azure Virtual Desktop vs. Windows 365
Both services provide Windows environments to users, but their provisioning and assignment models differ. AVD gives organizations options to configure Azure session hosts and images, including pooled or personal arrangements. Windows 365 automatically provisions a dedicated Cloud PC for an individual user as a SaaS service. The products are related rather than wholly separate: Microsoft says Windows 365 uses Azure Virtual Desktop to connect and broker user connections to Cloud PCs. Microsoft’s Windows 365 architecture page explains that connection role.

Confirm the service version and migration status
Microsoft’s AVD overview states that Azure Virtual Desktop classic retires on September 30, 2026, and that connections to classic resources will be blocked after retirement. It directs customers to migrate remaining classic resources to Azure Resource Manager-based host pools before that date. Because that date has passed, administrators should verify Microsoft’s live notice and the status of their resources rather than assume how a particular classic deployment behaves now. Verify licensing for the users and workload
A March 2023 Microsoft licensing brief says users accessing Windows 11 through AVD need an eligible user license and lists examples such as Windows Enterprise, Education, Windows VDA, and Microsoft 365 plans. Licensing terms can change and depend on the agreement, geography, and workload, so confirm current eligibility with Microsoft’s licensing guidance before implementation. Read the dated licensing brief.
Design for the actual environment
Microsoft documents Windows 11, Windows 10, and Windows Server desktop experiences in AVD, along with Azure-hosted and hybrid options. Availability and suitability can vary by operating system, feature, region, and configuration. Before choosing a design, work through identity, networking, storage, host pools, monitoring, and expected usage using Microsoft’s virtual desktop architecture guidance. Check current service documentation for supported configurations and pricing.

When Microsoft desktop virtualization is useful
- Remote access to a consistent Windows environment: Users can connect to an assigned desktop without relying on the local PC to host that environment.
- Access to selected applications: AVD can publish individual apps through RemoteApp rather than presenting a complete desktop.
- Different user-assignment needs: Personal host pools suit dedicated desktops; pooled capacity suits workloads where users can share session-host resources.
- A local virtual machine instead of a cloud desktop: The broader term also covers a guest operating system running on a physical desktop, but that is a distinct deployment model from AVD.
