Compared with LOX/RP-1—the common rocket-grade kerosene pairing—methane requires cryogenic storage but may offer advantages for engine reuse and missions that could make propellant from local resources. Neither fuel is best for every rocket: engine design, tank volume, ground handling and mission needs all affect the choice.
What is methane rocket fuel?
Methane is the fuel, not the complete propellant. In the rocket engines discussed here, it is generally stored as a liquid and burned with liquid oxygen, the oxidizer. The comparison with kerosene is therefore usually between two combinations: LOX/liquid methane and LOX/RP-1. RP-1 is a refined, kerosene-based rocket fuel; it is more precise than ordinary kerosene when describing rocket propellants.
Rocket engines carry both fuel and oxidizer because they must burn propellant in space, where there is no usable atmospheric oxygen. The oxidizer matters to the engine and vehicle comparison, even when the shorthand focuses on the fuel.
How do methane and RP-1 compare?
| Consideration | LOX/liquid methane | LOX/RP-1 |
|---|---|---|
| Fuel storage | Must be kept cryogenic. Its storage temperature is more manageable than liquid hydrogen’s and broadly closer to liquid oxygen’s, but it still requires cold-storage equipment and associated ground operations. NASA, 2015 | Can be stored at ambient temperature, avoiding cryogenic fuel storage and tank-conditioning demands. NASA propellant-selection study |
| Engine performance | ESA says its Prometheus methane propellant reaches higher performance than kerosene, but that is not a universal, controlled numerical comparison across engines. ESA Prometheus page | Performance depends on the particular engine and operating conditions; the available evidence does not establish a same-condition numerical comparison with methane. |
| Density and tank volume | NASA describes methane as denser than liquid hydrogen, which can allow smaller tanks than hydrogen systems. That does not establish smaller tanks than RP-1. NASA propellant-selection study | In NASA’s historical study inputs, RP-1 is listed at 50.4 lbm/ft³ and normal-boiling-point methane at 26.4 lbm/ft³ at the study’s stated tank conditions. These are study-specific reference values, not universal modern vehicle specifications. NASA propellant-selection study |
| Deposits and reuse | ESA identifies reduced soot-related issues as a potential advantage for reusable engines. This does not mean methane engines produce no soot. ESA Prometheus page | NASA describes how thermal decomposition of kerosene can cause coking in cooling passages, reducing heat transfer and potentially shortening chamber-material life. Its work addresses a specific concern, not a claim that every kerosene engine cokes equally. NASA, 2016 |
| Potential at the destination | Methane and oxygen could potentially be produced from Martian resources, an in-situ resource utilization (ISRU) possibility rather than routine Mars operations. NASA, 2015 | The cited sources do not establish a comparable local-production advantage for RP-1 on Mars. |
Why does performance not give a simple winner?
Specific impulse, a measure of how efficiently an engine uses propellant, depends on more than the fuel name. Engine cycle, chamber pressure, mixture ratio, nozzle and operating conditions all affect it. A figure for one engine cannot be treated as a universal methane-versus-RP-1 result.

Vehicle designers also consider propellant bulk density alongside specific impulse. The combination affects mission delta-v as well as how much tank volume and vehicle mass the propellant system requires. A performance advantage in one engine context does not by itself prove that the complete vehicle will be smaller, lighter or better for a given mission. NASA’s propellant-selection study discusses selection in terms of these combined characteristics.
What does methane mean for engine reuse?
One reason methane attracts interest is the possibility of reducing soot-related maintenance issues in reusable engines. ESA presents that as an advantage of its Prometheus development work. The comparison should be understood as a potential benefit, not a guarantee of soot-free operation or successful reuse.

NASA’s 2016 discussion of kerosene focuses on coking: thermal decomposition can deposit material in cooling passages, impairing heat transfer and affecting chamber life. The concern is relevant to engine design and maintenance, but it does not show that all RP-1 engines experience the same degree of coking.
What does the Prometheus example show?
ESA describes Prometheus as an LOX/methane engine for reusable-launcher development. Its electronic regulation is specified to allow thrust from 30% to 110%. That range is a Prometheus program specification, not a general capability of methane engines. ESA Prometheus page

In a 2017 announcement, ESA said the project aimed to reduce costs to one tenth of those of Ariane 5’s Vulcain 2 engine. This was an ESA project target or claim published in 2017, not a cost reduction guaranteed by methane fuel or a result applicable to other engines. ESA, 2017
Could methane be made on Mars?
Methane has potential value for Mars missions because methane fuel and oxygen could, in principle, be produced using local resources. NASA’s 2015 article discusses the possibility of making propellant and consumable oxygen from the Martian atmosphere. That is an ISRU concept, not evidence that Mars missions routinely manufacture or use propellant there.

NASA Marshall’s Steve Hanna described a tested methane thruster configuration conditionally: “With the current configuration, these methane thrusters could propel a small lander.” The statement applies to the configuration tested and the small-lander use described in NASA’s 2015 article, rather than establishing a general capability for methane engines. NASA, 2015

The answer depends on what the vehicle must do and what its design can support. RP-1 avoids cryogenic fuel storage, while methane’s cold-storage requirement adds operational complexity. Methane’s potential reuse and Mars-resource advantages may matter for some programs, but they do not override tank volume, vehicle mass, engine performance or mission requirements.
