The mission team calls it a “wild west frontier” because it is new terrain for the rover and contains some of the oldest rocks it has encountered. Those rocks may preserve clues to early Mars, although their origins remain under investigation.
Where is Mars’ “Wild West”?
Lac de Charmes lies west of Jezero Crater’s rim. Perseverance’s mission team uses “Wild West” as a nickname for this relatively unexplored area, not as an official planetary region. The rover followed a looping route between outcrops of interest as scientists worked to understand how the valleys, ridges, and rocks formed.
In an update published by NASA on Sept. 28, 2026, with mission text dated Sept. 21, the team said Perseverance had spent 2026 in Lac de Charmes and was nearing the end of its exploration there. It was then heading toward a nearby area nicknamed Idubi, where the team had spotted hundreds of light-toned boulders.
What did Perseverance find there?
The rocks in Lac de Charmes are among the oldest Perseverance has encountered. NASA’s team says the rover made 13 abrasion patches on rocks that drew scientific interest. Abrasion patches expose a rock’s interior surface for closer inspection and help the team assess outcrops before deciding whether a target merits sampling.

Badger Peak and Gardenia
One patch, called Badger Peak, revealed an unusual mixture of light and dark textures. The team tried to collect a sample from the boulder but could not because it was too hard; it then looked for a similar target. The rover subsequently investigated a nearby outcrop named Gardenia, which may be a breccia—a rock made of fragments joined together. These observations and decisions describe the mission’s status in the September 2026 update.
Why are the rocks important?
NASA describes the Lac de Charmes rocks as having formed when Mars was young and heavily bombarded by asteroid impacts. That makes them older than the sedimentary rocks inside Jezero Crater, which formed in river and lake environments. Comparing the two settings can help scientists trace how Mars changed over time.

Current observations point to more than one possible process: some rocks may have formed from cooled lava or magma, making them igneous; others may be impactites, produced by violent impacts. Some could record both processes. These are interpretations under study, not a settled explanation for every outcrop in the region.
Athanasios (Thanos) Klidaras, a Purdue University Ph.D. candidate who wrote NASA’s mission update, said the rocks “could teach us much about the earliest era of Martian history — and, more broadly, how rocky planets evolved during the tumultuous early history of our solar system.” The word “could” matters: their scientific value depends on what further observations and analyses establish.

- ✅【The Best Gift of Enlightenment】This RC toy car is suitable for children from 4 years old and up, cultivating kids' interest in the future of science and space, having fun, and being educational. It is the best space gift for birthdays, children's days, Christmas, Easter, summer camp activities, and back to school.
- ✅【Rich Control Gameplay】The RC cars have special 6 wheels (4 drive wheels + 2 auxiliary wheels) and can be controlled by a combination of remote controls to achieve a variety of movements [1]. Forward and backward movement. [2]. Lateral movement. [3]. Turning around in place. [4]. Sideways adjustment of body direction. [5]. DEMO auto-drive mode.
- ✅【Adaptable to Multiple Terrains】Powerful damping springs and high-torque wheels allow the remote control cars to drive and climb over rough terrain, both indoors and outdoors and are not prone to rollovers.
- ✅【Strong Signal, No Interference】Using a high-quality 2.4 GHz remote control, the actual test effective control distance of 30 meters (no exaggerated propaganda) is very responsive. The signal stability and control distance are much stronger than the traditional infrared remote control.
How is Perseverance navigating the terrain?
NASA says a new driving algorithm repurposes a processor previously used to communicate with the Ingenuity Mars helicopter. The team says this supports longer and more accurate rover drives, helping Perseverance cover the terrain while following a route shaped by scientific targets.
