Google Ask Photos is an experimental, Gemini-powered feature in the Google Photos mobile app that lets eligible users search their photo library with conversational questions. You can use it to find a memory, ask about details visible in your pictures, or refine a search with follow-up prompts. It is an optional alternative to classic Search—not a replacement—and access depends on your location, language, account eligibility, and device. Google’s current Help Center says it is not available on the web.
What Google Ask Photos does
Instead of searching only with a short keyword such as “beach” or “dog,” Ask Photos lets you describe what you are trying to find or ask a question about your library. Google gives examples such as “Show me the best photo from each national park I’ve visited” and “What did I eat on my trip to Barcelona?” You can also ask about themes or details in pictures, such as decorations at birthday parties.
For a simple search, Google says Ask Photos initially displays relevant results. A more complex request may take longer: Gemini can continue working in the background to narrow the results and highlight relevant images. The answer may include text as well as photos. Google’s current Help Center describes the feature as experimental and warns that results can be unexpected or inaccurate, so check important details against the original pictures.
Google’s explanation of the system says it interprets a prompt, plans how to answer, searches for relevant concepts—including people, places, dates, and themes—and uses Gemini’s multimodal capabilities to assess candidate images. Google also says the system can read text visible in an image when needed. This is Google’s description of how the feature is intended to work, not a guarantee that every result or answer will be correct.

How Ask Photos compares with classic Search
| Search experience | How you search | What you get | Availability and control |
|---|---|---|---|
| Classic Search | Conventional searches for people, places, or things, such as “dog.” | Matching photo results. | Remains available; Google’s Android instructions say it stays the default unless you opt in to Ask Photos. |
| Ask Photos | Descriptive, conversational questions or requests, including follow-up prompts. | Relevant photos and, depending on the request, a textual answer or refined results. | Experimental, subject to location and eligibility limits, and switchable with classic Search. |
You do not have to use Ask Photos for every search. Google says you can switch between Ask Photos and classic Search results at any time.
Prompts to try
- Find a memory: “Show me the best photo from each national park I’ve visited.”
- Ask about a trip: “What did I eat on my trip to Barcelona?”
- Look for a theme: Ask what decorations or themes appeared at your birthday parties.
- Refine the result: If the first set is not right, add a clue or ask a follow-up question. Google described Ask Photos as a conversational experience in its September 2024 announcement.
- Ask about one picture: On Android, Google documents an Ask interaction while viewing an individual backed-up photo. Depending on availability, you can ask about that image, request an edit, or look for similar images.
Google has also described using the feature to help select trip highlights or identify candidate pictures for a shared album. What is available can vary by account and location.

Where Ask Photos is available
Ask Photos has rolled out in stages, so older launch announcements should not be treated as a current availability list. Google announced the experiment on May 14, 2024, and described select-user early access in the U.S. on September 5, 2024. On June 26, 2025, Google said it was beginning to expand access to more eligible U.S. users. On November 11, 2025, Google announced a rollout to more than 100 additional countries and regions and 17 additional languages.
Google’s current Help Center says availability remains limited to selected countries and regions, and functionality can vary by location. It also says Ask Photos is not available on the web. Google Photos itself is available on Android and iOS, but support for the general app does not guarantee that every Ask Photos function is available on every phone or account.
To check access, open Google Photos on a mobile device and look for the Ask Photos option or an invitation to opt in. If it is not there, your account may not yet be eligible. Google says users must meet the requirements for Gemini features in Photos.
How to opt in and manage the feature on Android
- Open Google Photos and look for the opt-in option in Search, or open the app’s settings.
- Use the settings path Photos settings > Preferences > Gemini features in Photos to find the relevant controls.
- Review onboarding choices. Google may ask you to confirm your “me” face group. You can skip labeling other people and relationships during onboarding and add, change, or remove those labels later.
- Choose how to use it. Unless you opt in, classic Search remains the default. You can turn off Search with Ask Photos or Gemini features in Photos in settings.
- For an Ask interaction with an individual photo, use a backed-up image. Google’s Android instructions say this feature requires the image to be backed up.
The feature is subject to Google’s Terms of Service and Generative AI Prohibited Use Policy.

Privacy: what Google says may be reviewed
Google’s current Help Center says Ask Photos queries may be reviewed by people to help improve Photos, after steps intended to protect privacy. You can turn off Allow us to access your queries in settings. Google separately says people do not review Ask Photos responses unless you provide feedback or a rare case requires action to address abuse or harm. Google also says voice recordings are not stored when you search with voice.
You can inspect and delete items in the Remember List, and turn off Search with Ask Photos or Gemini features in Photos. These are separate controls worth checking before you opt in.

Google’s privacy descriptions have changed over time. Its May 2024 announcement said people would not review conversations and personal data except in rare abuse or harm cases, and said data would not train generative AI products outside Google Photos. In September 2024, Google clarified that queries might be reviewed after being disconnected from a Google Account, while answers and photos generally would not be reviewed absent feedback or rare abuse or harm cases. For current controls and review practices, consult the present Help Center guidance rather than treating an older announcement as an unchanging privacy promise.
Do you need Google One or a new phone?
Google does not document a paid Google One plan, a special phone, or an accessory as a requirement for Ask Photos. Google One is relevant only if you need more storage for your photo library: Google says each Google Account includes 15 GB shared across Photos, Gmail, and Drive, with additional storage available through a Google One membership. That storage arrangement is separate from Ask Photos access.
