G.SHDSL is a symmetric DSL technology that carries data over copper twisted pairs: upstream and downstream rates are designed to match. Its actual speed and reach depend on the copper loop, the chosen rate, the number of pairs, and whether regenerators are used. A compatible provider-side DSLAM or access concentrator is also required.
What G.SHDSL does
ITU-T Recommendation G.991.2 defines G.SHDSL as a transmission method for data transport in telecommunications access networks. It is designed mainly for duplex operation over mixed-gauge, two-wire metallic pairs. In practical terms, customer equipment sends and receives data over one or more copper pairs, while provider equipment terminates the line and connects it to the provider network.
“Symmetric” means the upstream and downstream user-data rates are designed to match. It does not mean that every G.SHDSL service runs at the same speed: the configured rate and the condition of the line still matter.
What speeds can G.SHDSL provide?
The figures depend on whether you mean the rates in the standard or the capability of a particular product implementation.

| Reference | Documented rate | What the figure describes |
|---|---|---|
| ITU-T G.991.2, 2003 edition | Selected symmetric user-data rates from 192 kbit/s to 2312 kbit/s | The rate range specified in that edition, using trellis-coded pulse-amplitude modulation (TCPAM). |
| ITU-T G.991.2, 2003 edition, Annex F | Extensions up to 5696 kbit/s | An extension to the standard’s selected rates, not a guarantee that a given line or modem will achieve this rate. |
| Cisco ISR 4000 documentation, 2018 | 192 kbit/s to 15.36 Mbit/s | A Cisco implementation documented as sending and receiving symmetric data over one copper pair. Cisco also documents up to four lines supported by the NIM. |
The Cisco figure describes a specific implementation, not the rate range in the 2003 standard. Do not assume that a modem, router module, or provider service supports the same rates simply because it uses G.SHDSL.
How far can a G.SHDSL line run?
There is no single distance that applies to every G.SHDSL connection. Reach varies with the copper pair’s gauge and condition, attenuation, noise, target rate, applicable annex, and pair count. The 2003 ITU-T recommendation describes optional multi-pair operation and optional regenerators, but those features do not remove the limits imposed by the loop.
Use a reach figure only when it comes from a vendor or provider table that matches the actual line conditions and target rate. Without that information, the distance for a specific connection is not established.
How the access connection reaches the network
- Customer side: A G.SHDSL transceiver or router interface modulates data onto one or more copper pairs.
- Provider side: The pairs terminate at compatible equipment, such as a DSLAM or access concentrator.
- Network handoff: Provider equipment passes traffic into the provider network using the handoff available for that deployment, which may include Ethernet, ATM, or EFM.
Both ends need to interoperate. A customer device that supports G.SHDSL is not sufficient if the provider-side equipment, annex, pair configuration, or handoff is incompatible.

What to check before choosing a modem or router interface
The relevant product category is a G.SHDSL modem or an enterprise router interface module. Cisco documents a G.SHDSL EFM/ATM NIM for ISR 4000 routers and older G.SHDSL HWIC families. These are specialist components, so confirm the exact installation requirements with the device and service documentation before buying.
- Router chassis and firmware: Check that the module is supported by the specific router and software version.
- Annex and DSLAM compatibility: Confirm that customer equipment and the provider’s DSLAM or access concentrator support compatible configurations.
- Pair count: Establish whether the service uses one pair or bonded multiple pairs, and whether the equipment supports that arrangement.
- Interface and handoff: Verify the connector and the required network handoff, such as Ethernet, ATM, or EFM.
- Line conditions and target rate: Ask the provider what rate and reach it supports on the actual copper loop, including any use of regenerators.
Can G.SHDSL share a line with telephone service?
The original G.SHDSL specification does not support analogue splitter coexistence for simultaneous POTS or ISDN service. Do not assume that a conventional DSL splitter can provide voice and G.SHDSL over the same line; confirm the service design with the provider.
