It can preserve vivid highlights and a wider range of color, but the full effect depends on the apps and screen used to play or edit the video. On the regular iPhone 12, Dolby Vision recording tops out at 4K/30 fps; standard 4K recording supports up to 60 fps.
What Dolby Vision means on iPhone 12
HDR video can retain detail across brighter highlights and darker areas than standard dynamic range (SDR) video. Dolby Vision adds dynamic metadata: guidance that compatible playback devices can use to adapt the picture to the display and viewing conditions. The phone records the video; a compatible playback chain is needed to present the intended Dolby Vision image.

Apple says apps can capture, play back, edit, and export HDR video with Dolby Vision starting with iPhone 12. Dolby Vision Profile 8.4 workflows can also preserve ambient viewing-environment metadata, which can help playback adapt to room light. These capabilities do not mean every app, television, or export destination handles the video identically.
iPhone 12 Dolby Vision recording limits
Apple’s 2020 technical specifications list Dolby Vision HDR recording on the regular iPhone 12 at up to 4K and 30 frames per second. Standard 4K recording can use 24, 25, 30, or 60 fps. The practical choice is therefore often HDR detail at 30 fps or standard 4K at 60 fps when smoother motion or a non-Dolby workflow matters. Apple iPhone 12 technical specifications

What the recorded file contains
Dolby describes iPhone 12 Dolby Vision recordings as HEVC Main10 video in a QuickTime .mov container. The format is Dolby Vision Profile 8.4, with an HLG base layer, HLG transfer characteristics, BT.2020 color primaries, 4:2:0 chroma sampling, and 10-bit depth. This is the technical basis for preserving HDR and wide-color information in the recording. Dolby iPhone 12 workflow guidance

Should you use Dolby Vision or standard 4K?
| Choose | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Dolby Vision HDR | You want HDR highlight detail and wider color, and expect to view or edit the footage on compatible devices and apps. | On the regular iPhone 12, capture is limited to 4K/30 fps. |
| Standard 4K | You want 4K/60 fps motion, or your editing and delivery workflow favors conventional video. | It does not provide the Dolby Vision HDR presentation. |
If the destination is SDR-only, viewers will not see the full Dolby Vision presentation. iOS supports SDR handling for compatible devices and workflows, but app export behavior and metadata preservation vary. Apple’s device specifications establish recording capability; they do not guarantee that every social platform preserves Dolby Vision metadata.

What you need to watch the video on a larger screen
For the most direct presentation, use an HDR television that supports Dolby Vision, together with a compatible playback route. Apple lists HDR formats including Dolby Vision, HDR10, and HLG, and says iPhone 12 supports up to 4K HDR AirPlay to Apple TV (2nd generation or later) or an AirPlay-enabled smart TV. The display and playback setup must also support the relevant HDR format for its benefits to appear. Apple iPhone 12 technical specifications

A phone recording is only one part of the pipeline. A television or app may handle the Dolby Vision metadata differently, convert the video for SDR, or support HDR without supporting Dolby Vision. Differences in display capability and viewing conditions can also affect the picture. For consistent results, check that the playback app and connected display support Dolby Vision; if either does not, expect a different presentation rather than assuming the recording itself is defective.
