It follows the Collective agent who becomes the Warden as he defies his organization to revive a lost Essence—the mission that gives the Lazarus Protocol in the base game its origin. How does the Lazarus DLC fit into the Cronos story?
Lazarus fills in the past of the Warden, the mysterious caretaker who guides Traveler ND-3576 from the Terminal in Cronos: The New Dawn. In the prequel, you play the Warden earlier in his life, when he is still called the Pathfinder and is breaking with the Collective over a forbidden revival mission. The base game shows the consequences; the DLC is designed to show how he got there.
That distinction makes the expansion more than an unrelated side story. Bloober Team described it in June 2026 as “the missing piece of lore” about the Warden’s evolution and the Collective. Official materials frame the plot around a “lost Essence” that the Pathfinder refuses to let fade. The slogan, “Defy the Calling. Bring her back,” points to the emotional conflict without identifying the person in the material available before launch.

Spoiler clarification: The DLC’s official pre-release descriptions do not name the lost Essence. Base-game story material and published explainers identify her as Dr. Weronika Kamiński. That identification comes from interpreting the already released game, not from the DLC’s official announcement, so players should distinguish the two until the expansion is available.

Is Cronos: Lazarus a prequel or a sequel?
It is a prequel to Cronos: The New Dawn, set before the Traveler’s campaign. It does not continue ND-3576’s story after one of the base game’s endings, and it is not a separate sequel that replaces or follows that campaign.
In the base game’s alternate 1980s Poland, a disease called the Change brings humanity to an end. The Collective sends Travelers back to the moment of catastrophe to find people it considers important and extract their Essences. Lead writer Grzegorz Like described the Travelers as emissaries who “travel back in time” to locate targets needed by the Collective. He also stressed that taking human souls is not a benign process: “And because we’re taking away the souls of human beings, don’t expect it to be a nice thing.”
ND-3576 is one of those Travelers. The player wakes in the devastated future and uses the Terminal as a hub between missions. The Warden maintains the Travelers’ tools and the hub itself. Lazarus rewinds to the period when that caretaker was instead an elite Collective agent, the Pathfinder, and follows his transformation into the figure the Traveler later meets.

Spoiler: The Lazarus Protocol is the Pathfinder’s attempt to keep the lost Essence alive and bring her back. The DLC’s mission and the system referenced in the base game are two parts of the same story: Lazarus explores the origin of the forbidden project, while the base game begins with the Protocol already engaged as ND-3576 awakens.
Base-game logs and story explanations provide the fuller context. The Pathfinder became fixated on extraction target Weronika Kamiński, believing she should be preserved so she could find a cure. He obstructed other Travelers, took control of the Terminal, and used dormant Traveler bodies to prolong his own survival and interfere with new awakenings. In this reconstruction, the Protocol is not simply a name for the DLC’s mission; it is the machinery and repeated effort by which the Pathfinder tried to preserve Weronika.

The same account connects Weronika to ND-3576: the Traveler carries Weronika’s Essence without knowing it. One published interpretation of the Protocol’s records suggests the Pathfinder may have attempted to revive Weronika 319 times before ND-3576 woke. That number is an interpretation of the base game’s story material, not a confirmed count from the unreleased DLC.
This is why the prequel’s setup changes the meaning of the hub. The Terminal is not only a safe space maintained by a former agent; it is bound up with the Pathfinder’s effort to keep the Essence alive and control the Vocation. The Collective’s accusation in the story trailer—“You betrayed the calling bestowed upon you by the collective”—makes that break explicit. The Pathfinder answers with a rejection of the institution’s code: “You truly believe all this sacrifice serves a purpose. A calling. A code instead of a soul.”

The Tracker is the Collective’s hunter, sent to find and eliminate the Pathfinder before he completes the revival mission. That makes the conflict personal and structural at once: the Pathfinder is fighting both for the lost Essence and against the organization that once gave him his role.
Bandai Namco Europe’s October 28, 2026 announcement calls the Tracker a “relentless envoy of the Collective.” Steam describes the pursuer as adaptive and capable of matching the Warden’s strength, with encounters that escalate into large, cinematic battles. The story trailer gives the threat a blunt rule: “A tracker never fails.” Since the base game establishes that the Warden survives to meet ND-3576, the suspense is less about whether he makes it to the later timeline and more about what he must sacrifice to do so.
Some fan discussion has speculated that the Warden later wears a damaged Tracker shell. That is not an official plot detail. The Tracker’s fate and any connection between its equipment and the Warden’s appearance remain unconfirmed in the pre-release information.

How does Lazarus change the gameplay?
The DLC retains the third-person survival-horror setting but is pitched as faster and more aggressive than the base game. In The New Dawn, the Traveler’s approach emphasizes precision, limited resources, and choosing when to fight. The Pathfinder is an elite agent who can move quickly and hit hard, even though the official description calls him scarred, broken, and not at full strength.

- Teleportation: Quickly reposition during combat, helping the Pathfinder change angles or escape immediate pressure.

Should you play Lazarus before or after Cronos: The New Dawn?
For most players, play the base game first, then Lazarus. That order preserves the Warden’s identity and motives as part of the Traveler’s mystery, then lets the prequel reframe what you have already seen. It also follows the expansion’s own framing, which refers to “the Warden you know and love from the base game.”
Playing the DLC first is still a valid option if you prefer chronological order, but it changes the first campaign’s reveals. You will learn who the Warden was and why the Lazarus Protocol exists before encountering the Terminal and its caretaker through ND-3576’s perspective.

The campaigns also ask for different combat habits. The Traveler’s scarcity-focused approach includes burning corpses before they merge; the Pathfinder’s toolkit instead invites repositioning, decoys, and close-range aggression. Switching directly from the DLC to the base game may therefore mean adjusting not only to a different protagonist but to a less mobile style of play.

When does Lazarus release, and what do you need to play it?
Cronos: Lazarus requires the base game on the same platform. Steam explicitly states that the DLC requires Cronos: The New Dawn on Steam, and the expansion is not a standalone purchase that can be played by itself.

Bandai Namco Entertainment Europe announced a $9.99 price on October 28, 2026. The dedicated Steam DLC listing did not show a public price when checked in the available October 29 information, so that price should not be treated as a confirmed Steam listing. Bandai Namco also announced a 50% Halloween-season discount on the base game across Steam, PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and Nintendo eShop, with offer dates varying by platform; the Steam offer was listed through November 2, 2026. Prices and offers are regional and can change.
Steam’s DLC page lists Windows 10 64-bit, 16 GB RAM, a GTX 1080 / RX 5700 XT / Arc A770-class GPU, DirectX 12, and 30 GB storage. Treat those as the listed requirements for the page, not as an independently confirmed DLC-only installation size; the storage figure may reflect the base game.
The official Lazarus marketing page still displayed “Coming Fall 2026” on October 29, one day after the dated December announcement. The dated announcement and the official trailer description gave the more specific December 3 date for PC and consoles, so they are the clearer release references. Switch 2 is described separately as targeted for Q1 2027, not as part of that December launch.
What should players expect the DLC to reveal?
Before release, the confirmed premise is a personal rebellion: the Pathfinder is isolated in the Terminal, cut off from the Collective, and spending his time trying to awaken a lost Essence. The organization sends the Tracker to stop him. Bloober’s June announcement described the story as one of rebellion, inner conflict, and the cost of defying the Collective; a July developer deep-dive recap characterized it as “a story about a hunter getting hunted.”

Those details establish the conflict but not the complete plot. The DLC was scheduled for December 3, 2026, and as of October 29, its full story, runtime, and whether it names Weronika on-screen had not been published. There was also no review score for the unreleased expansion at that point. The base game’s three endings remain separate outcomes: the DLC is a prequel, not an announced rewrite or continuation of any ending.
If you want to follow the official release information, Bloober’s Lazarus page is a useful reference, but its “Coming Fall 2026” wording was already stale against the dated December 3 announcement as of October 29. The expansion is listed for Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S at launch, with Switch 2 targeted for the following quarter.
