Cognitive offloading is using something outside your mind—such as a note, calculator, another person, or an AI system—to reduce the mental work a task requires. Generative AI extends familiar offloading: it can do more than store or retrieve information; it can also suggest ideas, organize material, and carry out parts of a reasoning task. That may help you finish a task, but completing it with assistance does not establish that you learned or can later do it unaided.

What is cognitive offloading?

Cognitive offloading means changing how a task is done so that less information needs to be processed or held in your mind. A useful definition from cognitive science is “the use of physical action to alter the information processing requirements of a task so as to reduce cognitive demand,” as quoted by Wahn and colleagues in a 2023 PLOS ONE study.

The key is where the work happens, not whether a device is involved. Writing a reminder on paper, checking a map, using a calculator, asking a colleague, and setting a phone alert all move some demand beyond unaided thought. People have used external thinking tools long before generative AI.

Why do people offload mental work?

Attention, memory, and time are limited. When a task feels difficult—or a person doubts their unaided ability—they may seek outside support. Decisions can also depend on how reliable or expert the aid seems, what the person wants to achieve, and whether remembering the information matters later. Confidence influences the choice, but confidence is not necessarily a precise measure of ability.

Offloading is best understood as a trade, not as laziness or an automatic upgrade to intelligence. An aid may reduce effort or errors now; the user may also need to consider whether they want to remember the material, practice the skill, and verify that the aid is dependable. These factors vary by task and do not all have to point in the same direction.

How does AI change cognitive offloading?

Traditional tools often take on a relatively bounded job: a calendar stores a date, a search engine helps retrieve information, and a calculator handles arithmetic. Generative AI can also contribute to the production of an answer by proposing ideas, structuring an argument, or carrying out steps in a reasoning process. In that sense, it can shift more than memory or lookup outside the user’s mind.

A 2024 CHI paper frames reliance on generative AI as cognitive offloading and emphasizes the metacognitive challenge: users need to judge when to rely on a system and how to assess its output. Prompting, checking the result, and deciding what to accept leave the user with varying degrees of control. The paper discusses patterns in which less experienced users relied more heavily on tools such as Copilot; that is not proof that all novices over-rely or that AI use causes lasting cognitive decline.

Is cognitive offloading good or bad?

It depends on the goal and outcome being considered. An aid can improve performance on a particular task without showing that the person has learned more, retained more, or can perform as well without help. If your aim is to complete a task accurately, assistance may be useful. If your aim is to remember information or build a skill, doing at least some of the work yourself may matter. The evidence does not support a blanket verdict that offloading—or AI use—is always beneficial or harmful.

What one controlled study found

In a 2023 PLOS ONE experiment, participants performed a multiple-object-tracking task alone or with a computer partner. Across the experiments, they tracked an average of 3.4 targets alone and 2.4 while working jointly, effectively shifting one target to the computer; their tracking accuracy improved. This is a result from a constrained, low-stakes attention task, not a general estimate of human capacity or the benefit of AI across everyday activities. The authors cautioned against extending it to high-stakes settings such as medical decisions.

What a computational model suggests

A 2024 model of offloading decisions reproduced patterns reported in earlier work: people tended to offload high-value items and offloaded more as memory load rose. The model also captured a pattern called “saving-enhanced memory”: saving some items could be associated with better memory for other items, even as saved items themselves were more likely to be forgotten. Unreliable reminders weakened that effect. These are model-based findings, not a new population-wide estimate or proof of a general effect of AI.

How does cognitive offloading affect children?

A 2025 review in Child Development Perspectives reports that children as young as four can use effective offloading strategies, including relying more on external supports for harder tasks. It also describes age-related challenges: children may use a strategy too little or too much, fail to select it appropriately, or need a prompt to start. Their ability to understand what they know and act on that understanding develops over time.

The review concerns cognitive offloading broadly. It does not establish a particular long-term developmental effect of generative AI use, so findings about notes, reminders, or other supports should not be treated as evidence about AI’s effects on children.

Why do people choose one helper over another?

Offloading can be social as well as technological: another person can serve as an external memory or thinking resource. In a 2024 Memory & Cognition experiment involving 120 participants, people using a visuospatial working-memory task were more likely to seek help from a virtual helper whose memory appeared strong. In that study, this preference was independent of task difficulty, unaided ability, and participants’ metacognitive confidence. The experiment helps illustrate how perceived capability can guide the choice of an aid, but it tested virtual human helpers, not AI.

What can we conclude about AI and thinking?

The available evidence supports a careful distinction: AI can take on parts of a task and may change immediate performance, but that alone cannot tell us what happens to learning, memory, reasoning, or unaided ability over time. The cited work includes a conceptual paper, a computational model, a developmental review, a controlled attention-task study, and an experiment on social help-seeking. It does not establish a broad causal claim that routine generative AI use weakens cognition across settings.

When deciding whether to use an AI aid, match the choice to the task: consider what you need to accomplish now, what you need to learn or remember later, how much you can verify the output, and how much responsibility you want to retain for the reasoning.
