CMAF (the Common Media Application Format) is an ISO-defined format for organizing segmented audio, video, and other media so it can be delivered for adaptive streaming. It is a media format, not a streaming protocol: HLS and MPEG-DASH can both reference CMAF media, but each still has its own manifest and implementation rules.
What is CMAF?
CMAF specifies how media is structured into addressable objects for streaming and decoding on end-user devices. It is based on the ISO Base Media File Format (ISOBMFF), the family of formats behind fragmented MP4 media. The published specification is ISO/IEC 23000-19:2024, Edition 3.
In practical terms, CMAF gives packagers a way to organize encoded audio, video, and subtitles into tracks and fragments. Adaptive streaming systems can then describe which media objects to request and when to switch between alternatives.
What does CMAF stand for?
CMAF stands for Common Media Application Format. The name reflects its aim: common media objects that can be used by more than one adaptive streaming application, subject to each system’s manifest, player, and compatibility requirements.

How CMAF organizes media
Tracks, fragments, and segments
A track contains one media type, such as video, audio, or subtitles. It is represented by a header and one or more media fragments. A segment is a sequence of one or more fragments from the same track. A streaming presentation can combine synchronized tracks so a player can select the audio, video, and subtitle options it supports.
Switching sets and adaptive quality
A switching set groups alternative versions of a track that can be switched at fragment boundaries—for example, video encodings at different resolutions or bitrates. When alternatives are aligned in time, the player can move between them while maintaining synchronization. This is the media-organization side of adaptive bitrate streaming; the delivery system still needs to tell the player what is available.

Chunks
A chunk is a sequential subset of samples within a fragment. In chunked delivery, a sender can make usable media available before the full segment has arrived. That can support low-latency workflows, but CMAF alone does not set the end-to-end delay. Encoder, packager, origin, network, and player buffering all affect it.
Is CMAF the same as HLS?
No. CMAF describes the media objects; HLS is a delivery and playback system with its own playlists and rules. Apple’s HLS documentation describes playlists that reference CMAF tracks, including an EXT-X-MAP reference to the relevant CMAF header. Playlists may also signal independent segments when the CMAF fragments can be decoded independently.

HLS support for fragmented MPEG-4 segments was added to the specification in September 2016, according to Apple. Clients built around earlier HLS revisions may not support CMAF, so the label alone is not a compatibility guarantee. Check the target player and authoring requirements.
What is the difference between CMAF and MPEG-DASH?
MPEG-DASH, like HLS, is a delivery system rather than a media format. DASH uses its own manifest (an MPD) and application conventions. HLS uses playlists. Both can reference shared CMAF media objects, but an HLS playlist is not a DASH manifest, and the two systems’ rules are not interchangeable.

The possible benefit is reuse: a service may be able to package media objects once and describe them through separate HLS and DASH manifests. Whether that works for a particular service depends on its codecs, media layout, encryption, client support, and packaging requirements. Shared media objects do not mean universal playback.
Does CMAF reduce streaming latency?
CMAF chunking can help a workflow publish and deliver portions of a segment before the complete segment is available. That makes chunked delivery a building block for lower-latency streaming, not a latency guarantee. The player must request and process chunks promptly, and the encoder, packager, origin, network, and buffering strategy must all be configured for the intended workflow.

When comparing live-streaming designs, look at segment and chunk publication, player buffer behavior, and the full path from encoder to viewer. A CMAF label by itself does not tell you the delay a viewer will experience.

Before choosing CMAF for a service, validate the intended devices and players rather than relying on a format label. Compatibility depends on the combination of media profile, codecs, segment layout, encryption, and application rules.
- Client versions: Confirm that the actual browser, app, set-top box, or other player supports the relevant HLS or DASH version and CMAF media.
- Codec and profile: Confirm that the device can decode the chosen audio and video codecs and profiles. CMAF does not make unsupported codecs playable.
- Packaging and manifests: Check that the HLS playlists or DASH MPD correctly describe the CMAF objects and that the tracks and switching alternatives meet the player’s expectations.
- Independent decoding: If a playlist signals independent segments, ensure the fragments are independently decodable as required.
- Encryption: CMAF can use MPEG Common Encryption, but that does not provide a DRM service or guarantee cross-device playback. Verify the chosen encryption configuration against platform and HLS/DASH application requirements.
- Latency: Test the whole live path—including player buffering—if a particular end-to-end delay matters.
Which CMAF edition is current?
As of October 3, 2026, ISO lists ISO/IEC 23000-19:2024, Edition 3, published in February 2024, with two amendments and the status “to be revised.” MPEG lists Edition 4 as ongoing and identifies draft text dated August 24, 2026. The ongoing draft is not the same as a published edition; implementation decisions should distinguish the published standard from work in progress.
ISO’s page describes the standard document as 142 pages. That is a document length, not evidence of adoption, performance, or cost savings. The reviewed authoritative sources do not establish a measured CMAF adoption rate, market share, or cost-saving figure.
