Clean HDMI is a camera’s live HDMI video without its own menus and status graphics—such as battery, recording, or exposure indicators—overlaid on the picture. It matters when you use a camera with a capture device because anything embedded in the camera’s HDMI picture can appear in your stream. But clean output alone does not guarantee a particular resolution, frame rate, image quality, or continuous runtime.
What clean HDMI means—and what it does not
Panasonic uses “clean HDMI” to describe HDMI video transmission without onscreen data indicators. A camera without clean HDMI may still send video to a capture card, but its interface can remain visible in the feed. Panasonic’s compatibility information distinguishes models with clean output from those that show the camera interface.
Nikon also describes HDMI output as a way to send uncompressed movie data to an external device such as a recorder, monitor, or capture card. In practice, “clean” answers whether camera graphics are present; it is not a promise about every other property of the signal. It does not by itself guarantee a specific image quality, latency, autofocus behavior, audio route, resolution, or ability to run indefinitely.
Why clean HDMI matters for a stream
When the camera sends its live picture over HDMI, the capture device receives that picture. If menus or status overlays are part of it, they may be visible to viewers too. A clean feed keeps the camera’s interface out of the image, which is useful for streaming, external monitoring, recording, and video switching.

A capture card captures and delivers the HDMI signal to a computer; it does not remove graphics already embedded in that signal. If the camera’s menus appear in the stream, check the camera’s display setting or confirm that the exact model supports clean output before changing capture software.
How the camera-to-computer streaming path works
- Camera to capture device: Connect the camera’s HDMI output to the capture device’s HDMI input with a compatible cable.
- Capture device to computer: Connect the capture device to the computer, commonly by USB.
- Select the source: Open your streaming or video software and choose the capture device as the camera source.
This is the workflow described in Sony’s HDMI livestreaming guidance. HDMI connector sizes vary, so check the ports on both devices before choosing a cable rather than assuming every camera uses the same connector.

Check compatibility before buying a capture card
An HDMI port does not prove that a camera provides clean live output. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the exact camera model and intended mode. Panasonic’s compatibility information identifies different behavior across models; Nikon’s HDMI guidance separately lists cameras that can output uncompressed movie data.
Before buying, verify each part of the signal path:

- Clean live output: Does the camera send a clean picture in the mode you plan to use, or can its HDMI information display be switched off?
- Resolution and frame rate: What live-view format does the camera output, and which HDMI input formats does the capture device accept? NZXT gives 1080p or 720p at 60 frames per second as common capture formats, not as a guarantee for every camera-and-card combination. NZXT’s setup guidance is general; check both manufacturers’ specifications for your equipment.
- Continuous operation: Can the camera stay on for the length of your stream? Review its temperature guidance and runtime limits. Sony warns that high-quality continuous video streaming can raise a camera’s internal temperature and cause it to turn off until it cools.
- Power: Determine whether the camera needs external power for the planned duration and whether the manufacturer supports that arrangement.
- Capture compatibility: Confirm that the card accepts the camera’s output and works with your computer and streaming software.
- Cable fit: Match the cable’s connector ends to the actual camera and capture-device ports.
There is no universal HDMI resolution, frame rate, or runtime that applies to all camera models and capture devices. Treat each as a model- and setup-specific check.
Set up clean output and resolve common problems
Camera menus or indicators appear in the picture
- Look in the camera’s HDMI or display settings for an option such as HDMI Info Display and turn it off if available. Sony gives this instruction for its supported camera workflow.
- For Nikon cameras, Nikon’s general guidance recommends HDMI output resolution set to Auto, HDMI output display size at 100%, and HDMI live-view on-screen display Off. Controls and labels vary; verify them in the manual for your exact model.
- If the graphics remain, check whether the camera supports clean output in the mode you are using. A capture card will not remove overlays already included in the HDMI picture.
No picture, or an unstable picture
- Make sure the camera is outputting live video and is in the appropriate movie or live-view mode.
- Check that the capture device accepts the camera’s selected resolution and frame rate.
- Confirm that the capture device is connected and selected as the video source in your streaming software.
- Recheck the HDMI connection and cable compatibility at both ends.
These checks address common points in the signal path; device combinations differ, and no single troubleshooting sequence applies to every camera, capture card, and software setup.

The camera stops during a long stream
Check the camera maker’s guidance for temperature, continuous operation, and external power. Sony notes that high-quality continuous streaming can increase internal temperature and make the camera shut down until it cools. Do not assume clean HDMI means the camera can run without interruption.

Some cameras can work as USB webcams or offer a manufacturer’s webcam or direct-streaming feature, potentially avoiding the HDMI capture-card route. Availability and capabilities depend on the model, so consult its documentation. Panasonic’s compatibility information distinguishes capture-card compatibility from direct streaming.

If you do need HDMI capture, Elgato describes Cam Link 4K as a camera capture product for streaming and specifies a compatible clean HDMI source as a requirement. Treat a capture card as a purchase to make only after confirming your camera’s live output and the card’s supported input formats. A compatible HDMI cable is a secondary need, with connector sizes determined by your equipment.
