For one continuous YouTube stream, a suitably sized virtual private server (VPS) is likely cheaper than a dedicated server in the published examples below. DigitalOcean lists VPS plans at $12 and $24 per month with 2,000 GiB and 4,000 GiB of included transfer, respectively. Hetzner lists one dedicated-server example at $117.10 per month plus a $59 setup fee, excluding VAT. Those are provider-specific prices—not a market-wide comparison—and the cheaper option for you depends on transfer needs, CPU workload, location, tax, and billing terms.

What the published prices show

The headline rental price is only part of the cost of an always-on stream. At a constant bitrate, a stream sends data continuously, so check whether the plan includes enough outbound transfer and what extra usage costs. The following figures are provider examples, not a like-for-like performance comparison.

Example Published price and transfer Important qualifications
DigitalOcean entry Droplet $4/month; 500 GiB transfer Also listed with 512 MiB RAM and 1 vCPU. Transfer is well below the estimated monthly volume of a constant 10 Mbps stream.
DigitalOcean Droplet $12/month; 2,000 GiB transfer Below the estimated monthly transfer for a constant 10 Mbps stream.
DigitalOcean Droplet $24/month; 4,000 GiB transfer Enough for the estimated transfer of a constant 12 Mbps stream on bandwidth arithmetic alone; CPU fit is a separate question.
Hetzner AX42-1 dedicated server $117.10/month plus $59 setup Listed for Falkenstein and Helsinki; prices exclude VAT and reflect an adjustment effective 15 June 2026.

DigitalOcean describes a Droplet as its virtual private server (VPS) brand. Its additional outbound Droplet transfer is listed at $0.01/GiB; inbound transfer is free, and Droplet transfer allowances are pooled at team level. The Hetzner figure is one dedicated-server example, not a general dedicated-hosting price. A different provider, region, plan, tax treatment, or billing term can change the comparison.

Estimate the stream’s monthly transfer first

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends H.264 bitrates of 10 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 12 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. At a steady bitrate over an illustrative 30-day month, those feeds use about 3,240 GB decimal (about 3,017 GiB) and 3,888 GB decimal (about 3,619 GiB), respectively. These are calculations from bitrate and time, not provider quotes; they exclude protocol overhead and assume a constant bitrate.

The calculation is bitrate in megabits per second × seconds streamed ÷ 8, converted to the provider’s unit. A variable bitrate, network overhead, or a longer billing period can increase usage. DigitalOcean states its included transfer in GiB, so compare your estimate in GiB with its allowance rather than comparing decimal GB directly.

  • A constant 10 Mbps feed exceeds the listed 2,000 GiB allowance of the $12 example; the $24 example’s 4,000 GiB allowance clears the estimate on bandwidth arithmetic alone.
  • A constant 12 Mbps feed also fits within the $24 example’s 4,000 GiB allowance on that arithmetic, but leaves less headroom for overhead or bitrate variation.
  • If you use DigitalOcean and exceed pooled outbound transfer, its listed additional rate is $0.01/GiB. Include usage by other Droplets in the team when estimating the remaining allowance.

When a VPS is the cheaper fit—and when it may not be

Choose a VPS when the total plan cost fits

For a single feed, the cited VPS examples are substantially less expensive than the cited dedicated server, and a plan with sufficient transfer may avoid a separate bandwidth charge. That makes a VPS the likely lower-cost starting point if its CPU allocation and memory suit the job. It is not enough to compare the monthly rental line: include setup fees, transfer overages, tax, currency, server region, and any other traffic using a pooled allowance.

Price dedicated hosting when workload or bandwidth changes the equation

A dedicated server can become more plausible if the required compute or a provider’s transfer terms make a VPS unsuitable or more expensive overall. The available figures do not establish a universal price break-even point. Compare an actual dedicated quote against an actual VPS quote using the same bitrate, region, tax basis, and billing period.

Check whether the server must encode

There is a material difference between relaying or preparing an already encoded source and encoding or transcoding video on the server. DigitalOcean distinguishes shared-CPU and dedicated-CPU plans, but no performance test establishes which plan can reliably handle a particular stream. Do not assume the lowest-priced VM can encode your source: size it for the real workload and test it before relying on it continuously.

A practical comparison checklist

  1. Set the stream specification. Record resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, and whether the server relays an encoded feed or encodes/transcodes it.
  2. Estimate monthly egress. Calculate transfer for the intended streaming hours and bitrate, convert to the provider’s unit, and allow for overhead and bitrate variation.
  3. Compare included transfer and overage. Check whether bandwidth is pooled, which traffic counts, and the charge for additional outbound data.
  4. Check compute and location. Compare CPU allocation and memory for the workload, then compare regions that meet your latency and operational needs.
  5. Calculate the real bill. Add recurring rental, one-time setup, expected overage, VAT or other tax, currency effects, and the billing period.
  6. Test before committing to 24/7 operation. YouTube recommends a speed test, a test stream before going live, and monitoring stream health. Its encoder guidance recommends CBR and supports RTMP/RTMPS for the listed settings; YouTube recommends RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. YouTube transcodes live streams for viewer playback, which is separate from the outbound feed your server sends.
