ChatGPT Search combines web search with ChatGPT’s conversational answers: it can bring current information into a response, link to sources, and handle follow-up questions in the same conversation. OpenAI announced it on October 31, 2024, and it is no longer limited to the paid users included in the initial rollout. It competes with Google and Bing, but available product descriptions do not establish that it is generally better than either one.

What is ChatGPT Search?

ChatGPT Search is a web-search feature inside ChatGPT. Rather than returning only a conventional results page, it can use web information to answer a prompt and provide links to supporting pages. You can ask follow-up questions without leaving the conversation, so the next answer can take the preceding exchange into account.

OpenAI announced the feature on October 31, 2024. The launch announcement described a search model based on a fine-tuned version of GPT-4o, post-trained with synthetic-data techniques that included distillation from OpenAI o1-preview. That is a description of the launch-era model, not confirmation of the model powering every search response today. OpenAI says the feature draws on third-party search providers and content supplied directly by partners. OpenAI’s launch announcement explains the initial design and rollout.

How do I use ChatGPT Search?

  1. Open ChatGPT and enter your question. ChatGPT may search automatically when it determines that current information would help.

  2. To start a search yourself, select the web-search icon in the ChatGPT prompt interface, then enter your query. The icon’s appearance or placement may vary by interface.

  3. Review the answer and open its links or the Sources control to inspect the cited material. Ask a follow-up if you need more detail, a different angle, or clarification.

The launch announcement describes links to articles and blog posts and a Sources control for opening references. A citation is a path to checking an answer, not proof that the linked page supports every detail. OpenAI warns that search results and citations can be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. Check the linked source itself, particularly before relying on information that is time-sensitive or consequential. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search help page.

Is ChatGPT Search available for free?

OpenAI’s current Help Center lists web search for Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu plans, and says people can also use it without signing in. Search is subject to plan usage limits. Enterprise and Edu administrators can also restrict access through workspace settings, role permissions, and restricted-access controls. Check the current availability and access details if the option is missing from your account.

Availability evolved after launch. OpenAI’s October 2024 announcement initially described a rollout to Plus and Team subscribers and SearchGPT waitlist users, with Enterprise and Edu access planned in the following weeks and Free access planned over subsequent months. The announcement was updated on December 16, 2024, to say search was available to all logged-in users in regions where ChatGPT was available, then on February 5, 2025, to say it was available without signup in those regions. The current Help Center is the more relevant guide to access now.

How is ChatGPT Search different from Google and Bing?

The clearest difference is the experience: ChatGPT Search presents web information through a conversational assistant that can answer and continue with follow-up questions. But Google is not just a list of links anymore. Google describes AI Overviews, which can appear when its systems determine an AI-generated answer would help, and AI Mode, a conversational search experience with follow-up questions and web links. Google says AI Mode can fan a query out into related searches across subtopics and bring the results together. These are product descriptions from the companies, not independent comparisons of answer quality. Google’s AI Mode overview describes its approach.

What to compare ChatGPT Search Google Search
Answer format Web-informed answers in a ChatGPT conversation, with links and follow-up questions. Conventional search results, AI Overviews when Google’s systems decide they would help, and AI Mode for conversational search.
Source checking Links and a Sources control can lead to references; OpenAI cautions that results and citations may be incomplete, outdated, or incorrect. AI Mode includes web links; the cited product materials describe links but do not establish comparative source quality.
Follow-up handling Follow-up questions stay in the ChatGPT conversation. AI Mode supports follow-up questions; Google’s May 2026 post also describes continuity from AI Overviews into AI Mode.
Access Listed across Free, Go, Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu, and available without sign-in according to OpenAI’s Help Center; usage limits and some workspace controls apply. Not stated in the cited Google product materials.

There is a specific, limited connection to Bing: OpenAI’s Enterprise and Edu documentation says ChatGPT Search may share disassociated queries with Bing to return web results. That does not establish that every ChatGPT Search query, plan, or answer uses Bing in the same way. It is too broad to say Bing powers all of ChatGPT Search. OpenAI’s Enterprise and Edu documentation describes the scope it documents.

Google’s May 2026 post reported that AI Mode had more than one billion monthly users globally, a company-reported usage figure one year after launch. In May 2025, Google also reported an over-10% increase in Google usage for query types showing AI Overviews in the US and India, based on its internal experiment comparing cohorts. That figure concerns those query types in those markets; it is not an overall search-usage increase or a comparison with ChatGPT. Google’s May 2026 post reports the AI Mode figure, while Google’s May 2025 post explains the AI Overviews figure.

Which search tool should you use?

Choose based on the task rather than assuming a universal winner. For a conversational answer with web links and iterative follow-ups, ChatGPT Search is a natural fit. If you prefer Google’s results experience or want to try its AI Overviews or AI Mode, use Google. For a question where accuracy or recency matters, compare the cited sources and verify that they actually support the answer.

A fair comparison means entering the same queries into each service and checking freshness, source quality and traceability, follow-up handling, access limits, and fit for the task. The cited product descriptions do not provide a matched-query test or establish a general accuracy ranking, so they cannot show that ChatGPT Search has displaced Google or Bing or is better overall.
