Bluetooth Auracast is a Bluetooth LE Audio feature that lets one transmitter broadcast audio for compatible devices to receive. Instead of pairing a separate one-to-one audio connection for every listener, a transmitter advertises a broadcast; a phone or other assistant can help you select it, and compatible headphones, earbuds, or hearing devices play it.

What Auracast is—and what makes it different

Auracast™ is broadcast audio defined within Bluetooth LE Audio’s Public Broadcast Profile. A transmitter sends a stream that compatible receivers in range can join. Bluetooth SIG describes the design as supporting an unlimited number of receivers for one broadcast; that is an architectural description, not a guarantee of unlimited practical range or performance in every venue. ( Bluetooth SIG Auracast FAQ; Bluetooth SIG Auracast explainer )

With conventional Bluetooth audio, a source typically establishes an individual connection to a receiver. With Auracast, the source broadcasts audio for multiple compatible receivers to pick up. It is intended for shared listening, whether one person is using their own device or many people are listening in a public space.

How an Auracast broadcast works

  1. A transmitter sends audio and an advertisement. The transmitter might be a phone, television, or public-address system. Its advertisement identifies an available broadcast and may show a name and whether access is open or secured.
  2. An assistant helps you find and select it. A phone, smartwatch, or hearing-aid remote can scan for broadcasts and present them to you, much like a list of public Wi-Fi networks.
  3. Your receiver joins and plays the audio. Once you select a broadcast, the assistant provides the receiver with the information it needs to join. The compatible earbuds, headphones, hearing device, or other receiver takes in the audio; the assistant helps with selection but does not have to carry the audio to your ears.

Broadcasts can be open or secured. Auracast does not mean that every stream is private or encrypted: that depends on how the transmitter’s broadcast is configured. ( Bluetooth SIG Auracast explainer; Bluetooth SIG Auracast FAQ )

Do your headphones, phone, or hearing aids support Auracast?

Support depends on the exact device, not just the Bluetooth version printed on its specifications. Bluetooth SIG says Auracast products require particular Bluetooth Core features introduced in version 5.2, as well as support for the Public Broadcast Profile. A device labeled Bluetooth 5.2 or later is not automatically Auracast-compatible.

  • Check the exact model. Look in the manufacturer’s specifications or support documentation for Auracast, broadcast audio, and LE Audio support. Confirm any required firmware or software version.
  • Check the complete listening chain. The source or transmitter must broadcast Auracast, and your receiving device must support it. For phone-based selection, the phone or other assistant also needs compatible support.
  • Verify each component for hearing devices. Support varies by hearing-aid and cochlear-implant model. Some users may need a separate Auracast receiver and compatible neckloop or headphones if their hearing devices cannot receive the broadcast directly.

Google’s Android announcement describes support on selected compatible Pixel, Samsung, Xiaomi, and POCO devices, and notes that both the phone and headphones must support LE Audio. This is not a claim that every model from those brands works; check the named model and its current software support. ( Bluetooth SIG Auracast FAQ; Google Android announcement )

Can you add Auracast to an existing TV or audio source?

Possibly, but it depends on the source’s capabilities and the manufacturer’s implementation. Some existing products may be upgradeable if their hardware supports the necessary features and their supplier enables them. Bluetooth SIG notes that many televisions may require a hardware upgrade. An aftermarket Auracast transmitter adapter can add broadcast capability to a TV or another audio source that lacks it, provided the adapter works with that source and the receiver supports Auracast.

Before buying an adapter, check how it connects to your source, which audio formats or inputs it accepts, and whether it broadcasts the stream quality required by your receiver. A Bluetooth connection from a TV to ordinary headphones is not, by itself, proof that the TV can transmit Auracast. ( Bluetooth SIG Auracast FAQ )

Where you might encounter Auracast

Venues can use Auracast to provide assistive listening or distribute audio to personal devices. Potential settings include transit centers, lecture halls, conference centers, houses of worship, tours, ticket counters, and public televisions in airports, restaurants, or waiting areas. A broadcast can also carry multiple streams—for example, original audio alongside a translation or audio description.

These are use cases, not a guarantee that a particular venue has installed Auracast. Ask staff whether the service is available and how to find the broadcast. Depending on the system, you may select it through a compatible assistant or use venue-provided equipment. ( Bluetooth SIG Auracast explainer; Hearing Loss Association of America Auracast Systems )

How to find and join a public broadcast

  1. Confirm you have a compatible receiver and assistant. Check the exact device models and software support. Some setups may let a receiver join without a separate assistant, but the discovery and selection method depends on the product.
  2. Ask whether Auracast is available. A venue may offer other assistive-listening systems instead, and not every location named as a possible use case has deployed Auracast.
  3. Open the device’s broadcast-discovery feature. Use the documented Auracast or broadcast-audio controls for your phone, hearing-aid remote, or receiver. There is no single universal menu path established for every brand and model.
  4. Select the correct broadcast. Match the displayed name to the venue’s instructions. If access is secured, follow the venue’s joining instructions.
  5. Check that the audio is suitable. For hearing access, confirm that the stream is intended for hearing devices and that the sound is reaching your receiver. Ask staff for help or an alternative if it does not.

Auracast and hearing accessibility

Auracast can be one way for a venue to offer assistive listening, but installing it does not automatically make a venue compliant with accessibility law or technical standards. Compliance depends on whether the particular system and deployment meet the requirements that apply to that venue. Existing hearing loops, FM, infrared, and Wi-Fi systems may remain available alongside Auracast during adoption.

Stream quality matters for hearing devices

The Hearing Loss Association of America distinguishes standard-quality streams, designed for speech clarity, low latency, and battery efficiency in hearing aids and cochlear implants, from higher-quality streams intended for music and entertainment. A transmitter that offers only higher-quality streams may not work with hearing devices that require standard-quality audio. Venues serving hearing-device users should confirm that their system includes an appropriate standard-quality stream.

What to do if your device cannot receive the stream

If your hearing aids or cochlear implants do not support Auracast, ask whether the venue provides a separate receiver that can connect to compatible headphones or a neckloop. You may also need to use a different assistive-listening option the venue offers. ( Hearing Loss Association of America Auracast Systems )
