AWS Cloud Digital Interface (CDI) is an SDK and transport technology that lets video applications exchange live, uncompressed media inside the AWS Cloud. It is designed for low-latency cloud production workflows, not as a consumer video format, codec, or general-purpose internet streaming protocol. AWS says its SDK uses Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) and Scalable Reliable Datagram (SRD) to move video between suitable EC2 instances, with latency as low as one video frame in supported deployments. AWS CDI SDK documentation

What AWS CDI is—and what it is not

CDI provides a way for compatible software endpoints to pass live video between applications running in AWS. A typical use is a cloud-based production workflow in which video must move between processing or production components with minimal latency and without first being encoded as a conventional delivery stream.

“AWS CDI” can also refer to CDI flows in AWS Elemental MediaConnect. These use the CDI transport in a managed media workflow, including connections to VPC-based sources and broadcast infrastructure. That is related to, but distinct from, the CDI SDK used by applications. Neither should be confused with SMPTE ST 2110-22, which carries JPEG XS-compressed video.

  • It is: a software SDK and cloud transport approach for exchanging live media in AWS.
  • It is not: a video codec, a standalone hardware product, or a public-internet streaming protocol such as one used to distribute a finished stream to viewers.

How the CDI SDK moves video

The CDI SDK transport stack uses AWS Elastic Fabric Adapter (EFA) and Scalable Reliable Datagram (SRD). AWS describes support for uncompressed UHD data rates up to 4K at 60 frames per second between EC2 instances in the same Availability Zone. That capability depends on using supported EFA-capable Nitro-based instance types and an appropriate deployment; it is not a general performance guarantee for any EC2 configuration.

Latency and buffering

AWS describes SDK transport latency as low as a single frame of video. The actual latency depends on deployment details, including endpoint proximity and buffering. AWS notes that additional frame buffering may be needed in some arrangements.

The guide also states a performance goal of no more than one dropped frame in a 24-hour period. This is AWS’s stated goal for the SDK, not a guaranteed outcome for every workload or network layout.

Placement and instance requirements

AWS recommends clustered placement groups for optimal CDI SDK performance. A clustered placement group is not suitable or possible for every interoperability scenario, so topology may require a trade-off between proximity and connectivity to other systems. EFA is available only on a limited set of Nitro-based EC2 instance types; verify current instance support and regional availability before designing around it.

CDI SDK versus a MediaConnect CDI flow

Option What it does Key constraint
CDI SDK Lets applications exchange live video within AWS using the CDI transport stack. Requires compatible software endpoints, supported EFA-capable EC2 instances, and a suitable network and placement arrangement.
MediaConnect CDI flow Uses AWS Elemental MediaConnect to transport high-quality uncompressed or lightly compressed media to or from a VPC-based workflow. A CDI flow requires a source in a VPC configured using Amazon VPC; topology and supported source/output interfaces matter.

For a MediaConnect flow, the VPC is part of the transport design, not an optional detail. Review AWS’s instructions for creating a flow that uses a CDI source before choosing endpoints.

CDI and SMPTE ST 2110: choose the right media path

SMPTE ST 2110 is a family of standards for separate media streams. In AWS’s product documentation, ST 2110-20 is the uncompressed-video path, while ST 2110-22 uses JPEG XS to carry lightly compressed video. They are different from one another and should not be described as interchangeable CDI modes.

Path Video treatment Where it fits
CDI / ST 2110-20 Uncompressed video Workflows prioritizing uncompressed media transport and able to support the associated network capacity.
ST 2110-22 with JPEG XS Lightly compressed video Workflows that need to reduce bandwidth, including some contribution links.

MediaConnect also documents media streams for audio and ancillary data, but its supported stream types are product-specific; it does not support every ST 2110 media type. Likewise, AWS Elemental Live’s supported content describes that product’s implementation, not the full SMPTE standards. Its documentation lists uncompressed SD, HD, and 4K video in progressive or interlaced 4:2:2 10-bit profiles, and JPEG XS SD/HD in progressive or interlaced 4:2:2 8-, 10-, or 12-bit profiles. Consult the relevant product tables for the workflow being built: MediaConnect media streams, Elemental Live and SMPTE 2110, and Elemental Live supported content.

Plan the topology before choosing CDI

CDI’s suitability depends on where the media starts, where it must go, and what connects those locations. For a cloud-only application workflow, consider instance support, Availability Zone placement, and buffering. For a broadcast contribution workflow, also account for the boundary between on-premises infrastructure and AWS.

On-premises contribution

AWS’s MediaConnect contribution example describes bridging on-premises SDI, 2022-6, or 2110 networks with VPC CDI using Direct Connect. The required interfaces and network path depend on the source and destination protocols. The example also identifies JPEG XS over ST 2110-22 as an option to reduce Direct Connect bandwidth.

Availability Zone boundaries

In the cited MediaConnect workflow, CDI outputs do not support transfers between Availability Zones. AWS points to ST 2110 JPEG XS outputs when cross-AZ delivery is required. Treat this as a topology decision to resolve early: changing the protocol path can affect compression, bandwidth, and endpoint compatibility. See AWS’s MediaConnect contribution example.

What CDI costs

AWS states that the CDI SDK itself has no fees. That does not make a deployed workflow cost-free: an implementation may use EC2, MediaConnect, Direct Connect, VPC networking, and other AWS services, each with its own applicable charges. There is no single workflow price established here; estimate the services and data paths in your own architecture using current AWS pricing before deployment.

When AWS CDI is a good fit

  • Your production or processing applications run in AWS and need to exchange live video with low latency.
  • Your workflow benefits from uncompressed media and can provision the supported EC2, EFA, placement, and network configuration.
  • You are integrating a VPC-based cloud workflow with broadcast contribution infrastructure through a managed service such as MediaConnect.

Consider another path when the network cannot provide the capacity needed for uncompressed video, when endpoints cannot use compatible AWS infrastructure, or when cross-Availability-Zone delivery conflicts with the CDI output constraints. ST 2110-22 with JPEG XS may help reduce bandwidth, but confirm that the precise source, output, and product profiles in your design are supported.

How to get started safely

  1. Map the media path. Identify every source and destination, whether they are applications in AWS, MediaConnect endpoints, or on-premises broadcast systems. Mark VPC and Availability Zone boundaries.
  2. Choose the transport boundary. Use the CDI SDK for application-to-application exchange; evaluate a MediaConnect CDI flow when the workflow needs managed VPC media transport or external contribution connectivity.
  3. Check compatibility. Confirm EFA support for the selected EC2 instance types, placement-group feasibility, flow source and output support, and the exact video, audio, and ancillary-data types required.
  4. Budget for bandwidth and services. Compare uncompressed transport with JPEG XS over ST 2110-22 where supported, and estimate current EC2, MediaConnect, Direct Connect, and networking charges for the actual design.
  5. Prototype and measure. Validate end-to-end latency, buffering, dropped-frame behavior, and recovery under the conditions your production will use. AWS’s latency and dropped-frame statements are product goals or capabilities, not deployment guarantees.
  6. Use AWS’s implementation guides. Start with the CDI SDK getting-started guide and the relevant MediaConnect CDI source instructions.

Common design problems and fixes

Problem Likely cause What to check
Throughput or frame delivery falls short of expectations Unsupported instance, unsuitable placement, insufficient proximity, or additional buffering needs. Verify EFA-capable Nitro instance support, same-AZ placement for the documented 4K60 capability, clustered placement feasibility, and end-to-end measurements.
A MediaConnect CDI flow cannot use the intended source The source is not in the required configured VPC or the chosen interface is incompatible. Review the VPC setup and the flow creation requirements for the exact source and output.
CDI output cannot reach a destination in another Availability Zone The cited MediaConnect CDI output path does not support inter-AZ transfer. Rework the topology or assess the documented ST 2110 JPEG XS output option for cross-AZ delivery.
Bandwidth demand is too high for the contribution link Uncompressed video consumes more network capacity than the link can provide. Evaluate ST 2110-22 with JPEG XS where supported and confirm the resulting profile is acceptable to both endpoints.
Audio or ancillary data is missing The required stream type may not be supported in the selected MediaConnect or Elemental product path. Check the product-specific media-stream and supported-content tables rather than assuming universal ST 2110 support.

Or let it run in the cloud

AWS CDI is for moving media between production applications in AWS; it is not a way to keep an uploaded YouTube video playing continuously. For that separate use case, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded recording or playlist live on YouTube from the cloud: upload the video, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your upload at its original quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream, and the first day is free with no card. Monthly: $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
