Apple iCloud is a cloud service that stores selected information and keeps it updated across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Apple includes 5 GB of storage at no charge; iCloud+ is an optional paid upgrade with more storage and extra features. The key distinction: syncing keeps devices in step, while a backup is a separate recovery copy—and iCloud Photos is a syncing service, not an extra photo copy inside iCloud Backup.
What does iCloud do?
iCloud stores personal information in the cloud and makes selected data available across your Apple devices. Depending on which apps and features you enable, it can keep items such as photos, files, notes, and passwords up to date. You sign in with an Apple Account and choose which features use iCloud. You can also access some iCloud data through iCloud.com or iCloud for Windows; available features depend on your region and system requirements. Apple’s Introduction to iCloud describes the service and supported uses.
Is iCloud free, and what is iCloud+?
Apple provides 5 GB of iCloud storage for free. That capacity is shared across supported iCloud uses, including photos, files, and device backups, so one category can leave less room for another. If the storage fills, you can manage what is stored or consider upgrading; a paid plan is not necessary for everyone.
iCloud+ is Apple’s optional paid upgrade. Apple lists storage capacities of 50 GB, 200 GB, 2 TB, 6 TB, and 12 TB. Plans can also include features such as iCloud Private Relay, Hide My Email, Custom Email Domain, Apple Invites, and HomeKit Secure Video support. Apple says an iCloud+ subscription can be shared with up to five other family members. Prices and availability vary by country, so check Apple’s iCloud+ plans and pricing for your location.

How to decide whether you need more storage
- Check how much iCloud storage you currently use and what is taking it up.
- Consider whether you need a specific iCloud+ feature, not just a larger storage allowance.
- If eligible family members will share the subscription, factor that into your capacity needs.
- Compare the current price and availability in your country.
- If you want an independent copy of important files or photos, plan for a separate backup as well as iCloud syncing.
What is the difference between iCloud syncing and iCloud Backup?
Syncing keeps selected information consistent across devices. When you change synced content on one device, iCloud can apply that change to the others. A backup, by contrast, is intended to help restore device data if you replace or reset a device. They serve different purposes: syncing is convenient access across devices, while a separate backup gives you another recovery copy.
Does deleting a photo from my iPhone delete it from iCloud?
If iCloud Photos is enabled, deleting a photo or video on one device deletes it on other devices that use iCloud Photos. Apple says deleted items can be recovered from Recently Deleted for 30 days. After that, they are no longer recoverable there. See Apple’s instructions for setting up and using iCloud Photos.

- Slim durable design to help take your important files with you
- Vast capacities up to 6TB[1] to store your photos, videos, music, important documents and more
- Back up smarter with included device management software[2] with defense against ransomware
- Help secure your important files with password protection and hardware encryption

Photos stored with iCloud Photos are not duplicated in iCloud Backup. If you want a separate copy of your photo library, keep another backup rather than relying on iCloud Photos alone.

Apple says iCloud data is encrypted, but that does not mean every category has the same end-to-end encryption protection. With the default Standard Data Protection, Apple holds keys for some data categories, which can allow account or data recovery assistance. Advanced Data Protection is an optional setting that extends end-to-end encryption to more categories, changing the recovery trade-off: you need to preserve access to your account and recovery methods.
