An M4A file is an audio file with the .m4a extension. It commonly contains AAC audio, which is lossy, but it can also contain Apple Lossless (ALAC). The extension alone does not tell you which codec is inside or whether the audio is lossless. To convert one, choose a format your destination supports, then export it with an app such as Audacity or, on Mac, Apple Music or GarageBand.

What is an M4A file?

M4A is an Apple-associated audio file type and filename extension. Apple’s developer documentation identifies it as the M4A audio type (Apple Developer Documentation). The extension identifies a file type family; it does not guarantee a particular audio codec.

M4A commonly contains AAC audio, but it can also contain Apple Lossless (ALAC). Microsoft documents AAC/M4A and ALAC as separate audio profiles and notes that M4A can use either (Microsoft Learn; Microsoft Support).

AAC and ALAC are not the same

  • AAC: A compressed, lossy codec. Encoding discards some audio information. Audacity describes AAC as lossy and compressed (Audacity manual).
  • ALAC: Apple Lossless, a lossless codec. It preserves the audio data represented by its source during encoding.

As a result, “M4A” does not mean “lossless,” and it is not accurate to call every M4A file AAC. Renaming an extension also does not convert the audio or change its codec.

Is M4A lossless?

It depends on the codec inside the file. An M4A containing ALAC is lossless; one containing AAC is lossy. The extension by itself cannot settle the question. Check the file’s codec details in an audio player or editor that displays media information, or inspect it with a suitable file-information utility.

AAC is often an efficient way to store audio, but no format guarantees a particular sound quality irrespective of its encoding settings and source. Avoid assuming that every AAC file sounds better than every MP3 file.

How do I open an M4A file?

Try opening it in the audio player or editor you intend to use. Support depends on the application and the codec in the file. Audacity can import M4A through FFmpeg, an optional dependency for additional formats. Some M4A files are protected by DRM and may only be usable in the software for which they were licensed; Audacity notes that these files may not import for general use (Audacity manual).

  • If the application reports an unsupported format, check whether it supports the codec and whether Audacity’s optional FFmpeg support is installed.
  • If the file is DRM-protected, changing its name or extension will not remove the restriction. Use software authorized for that file.
  • If the file opens but has no sound, check the player’s output device and volume as well as whether the file itself plays correctly in another supported app.

How do I choose a conversion format?

Start with the requirements of the device, editor, or service that will receive the file. There is no single best output format for every purpose. Audacity recommends following the destination’s specifications; when none are available, it describes MP3 as widely accepted and provides general bitrate guidance for speech and music (Audacity manual). Treat those as general guidance, not a universal standard.

Goal Practical choice Important limitation
Share with an app or device Use the format required by the destination. If it gives no guidance, MP3 is a broadly accepted fallback according to Audacity. Check the destination’s own supported formats and any requested audio settings.
Keep an uncompressed working copy Export to WAV if your editing workflow supports it. Converting lossy AAC to WAV does not restore audio detail discarded during AAC encoding.
Keep a compressed file AAC/M4A can suit destinations that support it. Audacity’s documented M4A export workflow requires FFmpeg.

Converting lossy AAC to another lossy format, such as MP3, introduces another lossy encoding step and can discard additional information. Exporting AAC as uncompressed WAV changes the container or encoding of the output, but cannot reconstruct detail that was already lost.

How do I convert M4A to MP3?

On Mac with Apple Music or GarageBand

Apple Support identifies Apple Music and GarageBand as Mac applications that can convert M4A files to MP3 (Apple Support). The exact controls can vary by application version, so follow the current instructions in Apple’s article and the menus in your installed app. These Mac workflows should not be assumed to apply unchanged on Windows or across every macOS release.

With Audacity

  1. Install FFmpeg support if needed. Audacity’s optional FFmpeg dependency enables additional formats, including M4A import and M4A/AAC export. Follow the installation instructions for your operating system in Audacity’s documentation (Audacity FFmpeg installation guide).
  2. Import the M4A file. Open or import it in Audacity. If it is not recognized, confirm FFmpeg support is installed and that the file is not restricted by DRM.
  3. Choose an export format. Use the export command in your installed Audacity version and select MP3 or the format required by your destination. If M4A is missing from the format choices, FFmpeg may not be installed or detected.
  4. Set the destination and available audio options. Choose where to save the converted file and review the format-specific settings. Use the destination’s required settings when it provides them.
  5. Export and check the result. Save the file, then open it in a compatible player or editor to confirm it plays as expected.

Audacity’s documented export workflow lets you choose a format and relevant audio settings; its interface may differ by version. For MP3, use the destination’s requested bitrate if specified rather than treating any one setting as universally correct.

Common conversion problems and fixes

  • M4A does not appear in Audacity’s import or export choices: Install or configure FFmpeg using Audacity’s guide, then restart the application if required. M4A is among the formats enabled by that optional dependency.
  • The file is rejected even though the extension is .m4a: The extension does not prove which codec is inside. Try a compatible application or inspect the codec; a DRM restriction may also prevent import.
  • The converted file is larger than expected: An uncompressed format such as WAV can use more storage than a compressed AAC or MP3 file. Choose a compressed output only if the destination supports it and its quality trade-offs suit your use.
  • The converted file sounds no better than the original: Conversion cannot recover details already discarded by lossy encoding. Use the original highest-quality source available rather than converting an already compressed copy in hopes of restoring quality.
  • The output will not play at the destination: Check the receiving app’s supported formats and required settings, then export again using those specifications.
