An LNG cargo is natural gas chilled into liquid form so it can be carried by ship. A commonly used approximation is that one cubic metre of liquid LNG becomes about 600 cubic metres of natural gas when warmed back into gas. The amount aboard a ship varies by vessel: the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) reported an average carrier capacity of 150,000 m³ in 2014, while a National Academies report describes about 174,000 m³ as the most-built large-carrier size.

What an LNG cargo is

Natural gas is cooled to about −260°F (−162°C), turning it into liquefied natural gas, or LNG. In liquid form it occupies roughly one-six-hundredth of the volume it would occupy as gas, making ship transport practical. The U.S. Energy Information Administration explains the approximate 600-to-1 volume relationship in its LNG overview; the U.S. Department of Energy also describes LNG as cooled for shipping and storage in its LNG overview.

A cargo is the LNG carried on a particular voyage. A ship’s stated capacity is the maximum volume it is designed to hold, not proof that it carried that full volume on a given trip.

How much gas one cargo can represent

To estimate gaseous volume, multiply liquid LNG volume by roughly 600. This is an explanatory approximation: exact conversion depends on LNG composition and the measurement conditions used for the resulting gas.

Vessel or figure Liquid capacity or volume Approximate gas-volume equivalent What the figure means
EIA average carrier capacity, reported in 2014 150,000 m³ LNG About 90 million m³ of gas, by multiplying 150,000 by the approximate 600 ratio Historical reported fleet average capacity, not a universal or current cargo size. The EIA separately described this capacity as approximately 3,300 million cubic feet of gas in gaseous form. EIA, June 19, 2014
Most-built large carrier size described by the National Academies About 174,000 m³ LNG About 104 million m³ of gas, using the same approximate ratio A size description in the report, not a current global average or a claim about every loaded cargo. National Academies, chapter 4
Q-Max example cited by the EIA in 2014 266,000 m³ LNG About 160 million m³ of gas, using the same approximate ratio An example of a very large vessel, not a typical ship. EIA, June 19, 2014

The National Academies report groups LNG carriers into several capacity classes: under 150,000 m³; 150,000–160,000 m³; 160,000–169,000 m³; 170,000–179,000 m³; and 180,000–200,000 m³. It also lists Q-Flex vessels at 210,000–215,000 m³ and Q-Max vessels around 260,000 m³. Those categories show why “one cargo” has no single fixed volume. The report describes 170,000–179,000 m³ vessels as the bulk of the large trading fleet and about 174,000 m³ as the most-built size; this is a fleet characterization in the report, not a definitive current census.

What happens after the ship arrives

At a receiving terminal, LNG is unloaded into insulated storage tanks and kept cold until needed. It is then warmed in a process called regasification and sent into a pipeline network for customers such as power plants and industrial facilities. The EIA outlines unloading and regasification in its LNG explanation. The Department of Energy describes the same sequence: “Once the ship arrives at the receiving port, LNG is off-loaded into well-insulated storage tanks, and later regasified for entrance into a pipeline distribution network.”

Why gas volume does not tell you how much energy a cargo supplies

A gas-volume equivalent is not the same thing as an energy amount or a count of homes supplied. The energy available from a cargo depends on the LNG’s composition and quality, while a household or power-plant comparison also requires a defined consumption rate and time period. The cited sources do not establish a universal energy equivalent, number of households, or duration of supply for one LNG cargo.

For a cargo-specific estimate, you would need the actual quantity loaded, its energy content or composition, and the relevant gas-volume measurement conditions. Without those inputs, the 600-to-1 relationship supports a rough volume comparison only.
