An IET Honorary Fellowship is a distinct honorary membership category for a person whose engineering work, service to the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), or association with the institution merits special recognition. Unlike ordinary Fellowship, it is not an application category with published achievement thresholds: a proposal is submitted, and the IET Board of Trustees elects the recipient.

The published route is deliberately concise. A proposal should contain brief biographical information and a short statement explaining the grounds for nomination. The nominee may be an IET member or a non-member. The current IET membership guidance directs proposals to governance@theiet.org; check that page before sending because contact instructions can change.

What an IET Honorary Fellowship means

Honorary Fellowship recognises an individual in an honorary capacity rather than recording the normal progression into IET Fellowship. The IET’s membership terms identify “Honorary Fellow (HonFIET)” as a separate category. The category is intended for people who have made distinguished contributions in an engineering discipline within the IET’s objects and purposes, people the IET wants to honour for service rendered to it, or people whose association is beneficial to the institution.

Those grounds are broad, but they are not a general award for popularity or a substitute for professional membership. The connection must be meaningful to engineering and to the IET’s institutional purposes. A strong proposal therefore explains both the candidate’s distinction and why that distinction is relevant to the IET.

The IET’s formal terms state: “Honorary Fellows are elected by the IET Board of Trustees.” That sentence establishes the decision-maker. It does not describe a public vote, an automatic entitlement, or a guaranteed result after a proposal is sent.

For the formal definition, see the IET’s Terms and conditions of membership. The IET also publishes an Honorary Fellows awards brochure with proposal guidance.

Who may be nominated?

The published guidance does not restrict Honorary Fellowship proposals to existing members. The IET’s current membership page expressly says that nominees may be members or non-members. It also describes a member suggesting an individual, so the page should be read carefully if you are asking who may act as the proposer. The evidence supports a non-member nominee; it does not establish that every non-member can submit a proposal without an IET member’s involvement.

Because the current contact page is an India-region IET membership page, prospective proposers should verify the latest instructions and any regional handling arrangements before emailing. The page currently gives governance@theiet.org as the proposal address.

Ground 1: distinguished engineering work

A candidate may qualify because of distinguished work in an engineering discipline that falls within the IET’s objects and purposes. A proposal should identify the engineering contribution in concrete terms: what the person did, the field or fields involved, and why the contribution is distinguished. The published material does not impose a particular job title, employer, country, number of years, or list of technical achievements.

Ground 2: service to the IET

The category can also honour distinguished people for services rendered to the IET. This ground is institution-specific. A proposal should describe the service and its significance to the IET rather than merely listing attendance, membership length, or routine participation.

Ground 3: an association that benefits the IET

The terms also cover a person whose association is of benefit to the IET. The wording is wider than a technical research contribution, but it still requires an intelligible benefit to the institution. Explain the nature of the association and the benefit; do not assume that status or fame alone meets this ground.

The public information describes a proposal-and-election route, not a self-application. The following sequence separates the published requirements from practical preparation:

  1. Select the appropriate ground. Decide whether the case rests primarily on distinguished engineering work, service to the IET, an association beneficial to the IET, or a combination. Tie each point to the IET’s objects and purposes.
  2. Prepare the two published elements. The awards brochure asks for brief biographical information and a short statement of the grounds on which the nomination is made. These are the stated contents of a proposal.
  3. Check the current submission page. Use the IET’s current Honorary Fellowship guidance for the contact route and any updated instructions. The page currently lists governance@theiet.org.
  4. Send the proposal through the governance route. Keep the submission focused on the candidate and the honorary case. The public sources do not identify a mandatory online form or a published fee.
  5. Allow the institution to handle its decision process. The Board of Trustees is the body that elects Honorary Fellows. The sources do not publish a scoring rubric, timetable, or detailed account of internal deliberations.
  6. Use the correct designation only if elected. The IET’s designatory-letter guidance gives the honorary post-nominal as “Hon FIET.” Do not present a nominee as an Honorary Fellow while the proposal is still under consideration.

What to put in a strong proposal

The official requirement is short, but a concise proposal still needs enough evidence for a decision-maker to understand the case. The following structure is practical guidance, not an additional published eligibility test.

Brief biographical information

  • State the candidate’s full name and current or most relevant professional role.
  • Identify the engineering discipline or institutional connection relevant to the nomination.
  • Give a compact career outline that helps the reader place the contribution in context.
  • Include major roles, projects, publications, standards, leadership, public service, or other achievements only where they illuminate the honorary case.

“Brief” matters. A biography that reads like a complete curriculum vitae can hide the reason for the nomination. Select information that supports the stated ground rather than attaching every career detail.

Short statement of grounds

  • Open with a direct sentence explaining why the person merits Honorary Fellowship.
  • Describe the contribution or service and its significance to engineering or to the IET.
  • Use specific outcomes or responsibilities where they are known, avoiding unsupported superlatives.
  • Explain the connection to the selected ground or grounds in the IET’s terms.

The brochure’s wording is “brief biographical information and a short statement of the grounds on which the nomination is made.” It does not state that references, endorsements, a minimum word count, a curriculum vitae, or supporting documents are compulsory. If you plan to add material, make sure it clarifies the case and first check the current IET instructions.

Honorary Fellowship versus ordinary IET Fellowship

These categories are easy to confuse because both use the word “Fellow.” They differ in purpose and entry route.

Point of comparison Honorary Fellowship Ordinary Fellowship
How someone enters the category A proposal is made and the IET Board of Trustees elects the recipient. The individual follows the ordinary Fellow application route described by the IET.
What it recognises Distinguished engineering work aligned with the IET’s objects and purposes, distinguished service to the IET, or an association beneficial to the institution. Sustained achievement assessed under the ordinary Fellowship criteria.
Who may be the subject An IET member or a non-member may be nominated. The normal membership application requirements apply.
Designatory letters “Hon FIET,” with the spacing shown in the IET’s designatory-letter guidance. “FIET.”

For ordinary Fellowship requirements and the application route, consult the IET’s Fellow membership page and Joining the IET FAQs. The general membership terms also distinguish ordinary Fellowship from the honorary category.

How to use “Hon FIET” correctly

The IET’s Using your designatory letters guidance gives the honorary letters as “Hon FIET.” That is the post-nominal form to use when describing someone who has actually been elected. The category name in the membership terms appears as “Honorary Fellow (HonFIET),” while the designatory-letter presentation includes a space: “Hon FIET.” Keeping those two usages distinct avoids implying that honorary and ordinary Fellowship are the same.

Do not add the letters to a proposal, biography, email signature, conference programme, or website before the election has taken place. A pending nominee can be described as “nominated for IET Honorary Fellowship,” but not as an Honorary Fellow.

  • There is no published public deadline for submitting a proposal.
  • No fixed decision timetable is stated.
  • No detailed scoring matrix or numerical threshold is published.
  • The sources do not promise that a properly formatted proposal will be accepted or that an election will follow.
  • No public statistics are given for the number of proposals, successful elections, or annual places.

These omissions do not mean that no internal process exists; they mean that a proposer should not invent one or rely on an unofficial deadline, success rate, or guarantee. For current procedural questions, use the IET page and governance contact rather than an old summary or a third-party description.

A practical pre-submission checklist

  • Have you stated which honorary ground supports the nomination?
  • Does the biography establish who the person is without becoming an unfiltered curriculum vitae?
  • Does the grounds statement explain the engineering distinction, IET service, or institutional benefit?
  • Have you made the IET connection explicit rather than relying on the candidate’s reputation?
  • Is the nominee’s membership status clear, while recognising that non-members may be nominated?
  • Have you checked the current IET Honorary Fellowship page for the submission address and any changed instructions?
  • Have you avoided describing the person as “Hon FIET” unless the election has occurred?

Example of a clear nomination structure

A concise submission might use three short parts:

  1. Subject line: “Proposal for IET Honorary Fellowship — [candidate’s name].”
  2. Biography: one or two compact paragraphs covering the candidate’s relevant career and IET connection.
  3. Grounds: a focused explanation of the distinguished work, service, or beneficial association, followed by why recognising it would serve the IET’s purposes.

The bracketed text above is a drafting label, not an IET form or required wording. The key is to make the case understandable without claiming that the proposal itself confers membership or election.

Bottom line for prospective proposers

An IET Honorary Fellowship is an exceptional, honorary category separate from ordinary FIET membership. A member can suggest a person who may be either an IET member or a non-member, using a brief biography and a short statement of grounds. Submit through the current governance contact, then treat the matter as a proposal for consideration: election belongs to the IET Board of Trustees, and the public sources provide no deadline, timetable, scoring formula, or guarantee of success.
