An antidetect browser is software that lets you create separate browser profiles and change some of the characteristics websites can observe. It is commonly used to keep authorized work environments apart—for example, when testing a site or managing different client accounts. It does not make you invisible: websites may still recognize altered fingerprints, and a proxy or separate profile does not override a service’s rules or applicable law.

What an antidetect browser does

Websites can observe characteristics of the browser and device connecting to them. An antidetect browser typically lets you maintain multiple isolated profiles and modify selected browser-visible values for each one. The precise signals, storage behavior, and isolation guarantees vary by product; a vendor’s feature description is not independent proof of how well those protections work.

The term is a product-category label, not a standardized technical guarantee. It should not be read as a promise that a user cannot be identified or that a website cannot detect the software.

How browser fingerprinting works

Browser fingerprinting means identifying or re-identifying a user, user agent, or device from observable configuration characteristics. A site may combine several such characteristics rather than rely on one setting. The W3C notes that fingerprinting has privacy implications, but can also be used for security purposes: W3C guidance on mitigating browser fingerprinting.

An antidetect browser attempts to alter some of these browser-exposed signals, often separately for each profile. That is different from changing the apparent network address. A proxy can route traffic through another network address; browser-profile software changes browser-visible characteristics. Neither capability automatically provides the other, and a changed address does not make a profile trustworthy or anonymous.

Common authorized uses

Separate profiles can help keep cookies, sessions, and other browser state for different work contexts from mixing together. Examples of legitimate uses include:

  • Quality assurance: check how a site behaves under different browser or device configurations.
  • Client and business work: keep authorized client environments and account sessions separate.
  • Advertising verification and research: inspect how content or a site appears in permitted testing scenarios.

These are examples, not permission from every website to operate multiple accounts or alter browser characteristics. For instance, the Fury project’s acceptable-use policy describes certain business, ad-verification, QA, and research uses while excluding fraud, credential attacks, impersonation, and bypassing identity checks required by law. That policy is project-specific; check the terms of the service you intend to use and the law that applies to you.

Can websites detect an antidetect browser?

Yes. A site can evaluate observable signals and their consistency, and altered fingerprints are not guaranteed to pass such checks. A 2018 USENIX Security paper examined how inconsistencies introduced by fingerprinting countermeasures can be detected: FP-Scanner: The Privacy Implications of Browser Fingerprint Inconsistencies. Its existence supports caution, not a claim that every product or profile will be detected in every situation.

More broadly, changing a fingerprint does not defeat account, identity, fraud, or bot controls. Do not use these tools to evade a service’s controls, impersonate someone, or bypass a legally required identity check.

Antidetect profiles and Tor Browser take different approaches

An antidetect browser generally focuses on keeping multiple profiles separate and making selected profiles differ. Tor Browser takes a distinct approach intended to make users less distinctive by reducing variations and grouping users around common values. Its documented measures include letterboxing, standardized browser values, and first-party isolation; these measures do not mean that every signal is hidden. See the Tor Browser fingerprinting-protection overview.

If your goal is general privacy rather than operating multiple authorized work profiles, these are different design approaches, not interchangeable products. Tor Project guidance also cautions that using Tor through another browser does not provide Tor Browser’s protections; another browser may expose identifying details or retain tracking state. See Tor Project guidance on using Tor with other browsers.

What to check before choosing or using one

Evaluate a tool against your authorized use case rather than the broad “antidetect” label. Check:

  • Profile isolation and storage: what data is separated between profiles, where it is stored, and what happens when a profile is deleted or shared.
  • Signals changed: which browser-visible characteristics can be configured and which remain unchanged.
  • Limitations and transparency: whether the vendor explains that profiles can still be detected and avoids promising invisibility.
  • Updates and security: how the browser is maintained and how security updates are delivered.
  • Data handling and team controls: what account or profile data the provider handles and what controls are available for collaborators.
  • Automation and compatibility: whether it supports your testing workflow and works with the relevant service’s terms.

Do not assume that a product’s marketing claims establish its security, privacy, or effectiveness. Verify the behavior you need in a permitted test environment, and avoid putting sensitive credentials into software you have not evaluated.

Screenshot websites without configuring a browser

If the task is simply to capture a website for documentation or testing, an antidetect browser is usually not the relevant tool. ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers; it returns a screenshot or PDF from a request, without requiring you to set up a browser profile for that capture.

Or skip the browser setup

For a one-request capture, use ScreenshotNeo’s API. Replace the sample URL with the page you are authorized to capture and provide your API key. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed. Its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots, and the free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does an antidetect browser hide my IP address?

Not by itself. Browser-profile changes and network routing are separate; a proxy may change the apparent network address, while the browser changes selected browser-visible signals.

Is an antidetect browser legal?

The category alone does not determine legality. The answer depends on what you do, applicable law, and the service’s terms. Do not use one for fraud, impersonation, credential attacks, or evading legally required identity checks.
