A virtual background replaces, blurs, or obscures what your camera sees behind you. To use one in a live stream, either remove a physical green screen with chroma keying or let supported software separate you from an ordinary background; then send the composed scene to your streaming software or to another app through a virtual camera. You do not always need a green screen, but the cleanest method depends on your lighting, computer, camera, and software.
What a virtual background does
A virtual background is a digital image, video, blur, or scene shown in place of—or over—the camera’s real background. The software either identifies the person in the foreground and separates them from the room, or removes a particular color from a physical screen. The resulting camera image can be used directly in a streaming scene or passed to another application as a webcam feed.
These are different from simply placing an image behind a webcam frame in a scene: the person and camera feed must be composited so the background is hidden while the subject remains visible.
Do you need a green screen?
No. Supported software can remove an ordinary background without a physical screen. A green or blue screen is optional, but it gives chroma-key software a consistent color to remove and can produce sharper subject edges while using fewer system resources. Zoom describes its green-screen method as improving sharpness and definition and requiring fewer resources than its no-screen method. Results still depend on setup; there is no universal winner across devices and applications.

| Approach | What it needs | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Physical screen and chroma key | A solid, distinct screen color, even lighting, and a keying filter in your software. | Can give cleaner edges and reduce processing demand. The screen needs to be positioned and lit; avoid clothing that matches the keyed color. |
| Software background removal | An app or supported effect, plus compatible hardware and sufficient system resources. | No physical screen is needed and setup can be more portable, but edge definition may be less precise and system requirements can be higher. |
Zoom’s guidance is to “Use uniform lighting and color.” For a physical screen, choose a bright, distinct color, light it evenly, and avoid clothing in that color. Without a screen, light your face and some of the background evenly to help software distinguish the subject. Zoom also notes that higher-quality cameras can improve the result. Check the requirements for your specific app and device: background video and no-screen effects may need more resources, and an account administrator can restrict virtual backgrounds.
How to use a virtual background in OBS
With a physical green screen
- Add your camera: In your OBS scene, add a Video Capture Source and select your webcam or camera.
- Apply the key: In the camera source’s filters, add a Chroma Key filter and choose the screen color you want removed. Adjust the filter while watching the preview so it removes the backdrop without cutting into your hair, face, or clothing.
- Put the new background behind the camera: Add an image, video, or other scene layer and place it below the camera source in the Sources list. The camera subject should remain in front while the keyed area reveals the layer behind it.
- Check the composed shot: Review framing, lighting, and edges in the OBS preview before starting the stream. Make sure the background layer fills the frame and that movement does not reveal areas outside the screen.
OBS’s basic webcam setup documents the Video Capture Source and Chroma Key workflow: OBS: Video Capture Sources and OBS: Chroma Key Filter.

NVIDIA announced native integration of NVIDIA Broadcast virtual-background and room-echo effects in OBS 28.0 for GeForce RTX streamers; the background effect did not require a physical green screen. NVIDIA’s setup guide instructs OBS users to add a Video Capture Source and select “Camera (NVIDIA Broadcast).” Compatibility and requirements can change, so confirm that the feature supports your current device and software before building your scene around it.

How to send an OBS scene to another app
OBS Virtual Camera makes an OBS scene available to applications that accept a webcam feed, such as a meeting or streaming app. Build and preview your scene in OBS first, then:
- In OBS, open the Virtual Camera output options and choose what it should send. Program is the normal choice for the live scene. Scene or Source can lock output to a particular scene or source.
- Click Start Virtual Camera in the OBS Controls dock.
- In the receiving app’s camera settings, select OBS Virtual Camera.
- Check the receiving app’s preview before going live. If OBS Studio Mode is on, remember that selecting Preview output sends the preview scene—including edits as they happen—instead of the program output.
See OBS Virtual Camera Guide for the documented output choices and setup.

Check the stream before you go live
- Subject edges look jagged or disappear: Reposition or relight the screen, use a color that contrasts with your clothes and skin, and adjust the chroma-key filter gradually. For software removal, improve even lighting on your subject and part of the background.
- The background spills around you: Check that the screen fills the camera’s view and is evenly lit. With no-screen segmentation, reduce visual clutter where possible and verify the app supports the effect on your hardware.
- The picture stutters or the effect is unavailable: Background video and software removal can demand more resources. Check the application’s compatibility requirements and try a simpler scene or a physical screen if supported.
- The receiving app shows the wrong scene: Confirm that OBS Virtual Camera is running, the receiving app selected it as its camera, and OBS is set to the intended output—especially if Studio Mode is enabled.
- Virtual backgrounds are missing in Zoom: Check Zoom’s device requirements and whether an account administrator has restricted the feature.

Or let it run in the cloud
Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live.
