A travel router connects to an existing internet source—such as hotel Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or a tethered phone—and creates a private local network for your devices. It can make it easier to connect several devices through one setup, but it does not create internet access by itself, and hotel sign-in systems may not always work with it.

What a travel router does

A travel router is a compact router you take with you. It acts as the link between an upstream internet connection and a local network for your phone, laptop, tablet, or other devices. GL.iNet describes its Repeater mode as connecting a router to an existing wireless network, such as free hotel or café Wi-Fi.

Your devices connect to the travel router’s Wi-Fi rather than each joining the hotel network separately. Depending on the model and how it is configured, the router may appear to the hotspot as one client while it serves multiple devices locally. Hotel rules and device limits still apply; the router does not override them. GL.iNet’s Repeater guide describes how its implementation works.

How a travel router works

  1. Connect it to an upstream source. Depending on the model, that may be Wi-Fi, Ethernet, USB tethering from a phone, or a compatible cellular modem.
  2. Complete any required sign-in. If the hotspot uses a captive portal—a web page that requires you to accept terms or enter details—the router or a connected device may need to complete that step.
  3. Join the router’s local network. Connect your personal devices to the travel router’s Wi-Fi and use the internet connection it is sharing.
  4. Optionally configure supported features. Some models can route connected-device traffic through a configured VPN. This is separate from the internet connection: the router still needs a working upstream source.

For example, the GL.iNet Beryl (GL-MT1300) guide documents Ethernet, repeater Wi-Fi, USB tethering, and a USB cellular modem as internet connection options. These are capabilities of that model, not a promise that every travel router supports the same inputs.

Ways to get an internet connection while traveling

Upstream connection What it involves What to check
Hotel or café Wi-Fi The router joins an existing wireless network and shares it with your devices. Repeater support, captive-portal compatibility, and the hotspot’s terms or device limits.
Ethernet A cable connects the router to a wired internet port. Whether the model has an Ethernet WAN port and whether the room’s connection requires a sign-in.
Phone tethering A compatible router uses a phone’s internet connection, for example over USB. Model and phone compatibility, cable or port requirements, and your mobile plan’s tethering terms.
Cellular modem Some routers accept a compatible USB cellular modem. Modem compatibility, supported cellular bands, service availability, and any required plan.

Some routers may also have built-in cellular connectivity, but availability and supported networks depend on the specific product. Check the manufacturer’s specifications rather than assuming a travel router includes cellular service.

Using one with hotel Wi-Fi and a captive portal

A captive portal is the sign-in or acceptance page that appears before a public hotspot grants internet access. A travel router can simplify connecting your own devices after setup, but portal handling varies by router, firmware, and the hotel’s network rules. Authentication can fail even when the router supports a login feature.

GL.iNet’s captive-portal guide, updated August 24, 2026, describes troubleshooting options including checking DNS or VPN settings, using login mode, cloning a device’s MAC address, or asking hotel staff to whitelist the router. These are possible remedies, not guaranteed workarounds; a network may enforce restrictions that prevent the connection.

Be cautious with hotspot login modes. GL.iNet warns that its public-hotspot login mode switches DNS to automatic and may expose network activity to the hotspot provider. It should not be treated as a security upgrade.

  • Travel Sized Design: Conveniently small and light to pack and take on the road, creating Wi Fi network via Ethernet
  • Dual Band AC750 Wi Fi: Strong, fast connection for HD streaming on all your devices. Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, & obstacles such as walls.
  • One Switch for Multiple Modes: Perfect for Wi Fi at Home, your hotel room or on the road

  • Industry leading 2 year warranty and unlimited 24/7 technical support. Keep your WiFi performing at its best by keeping the firmware updated through the Tether App.

What a travel router does not guarantee

  • Internet access: The router needs a usable upstream connection, a tethered phone with service, or compatible cellular equipment and service.
  • Faster Wi-Fi: In repeater mode, performance depends on the upstream connection and local conditions. There is no general speed improvement guaranteed over connecting directly to hotel Wi-Fi.
  • Successful hotel login: Portal compatibility is network-specific, and a hotel’s rules may block or limit router use.
  • Identical security behavior across models: In GL.iNet’s documented default WISP mode, the router creates a separate subnet and acts as a firewall between the public network and local devices. Do not assume every brand or model routes or protects traffic in the same way.
  • VPN protection without setup: A VPN feature, when supported, must be configured and depends on a working upstream connection and compatible VPN settings.

How to choose a travel router

Start with the connection you expect to use, then check the details that affect your devices and trips. Manufacturer lineups include models using different Wi-Fi generations, including Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi 6, and Wi-Fi 7; those labels alone are not an independent performance ranking.

  • Upstream options: Confirm support for the connection you need—Wi-Fi repeater, Ethernet, USB phone tethering, cellular modem, or built-in cellular.
  • Local Wi-Fi: Check the supported Wi-Fi standard and bands, plus whether it can serve the number and types of devices you plan to connect.
  • Ports: Verify whether the router has the Ethernet WAN or LAN ports you need, and how many.
  • Captive portals: Look for documented hotspot login support and troubleshooting steps, while treating compatibility as uncertain for any specific hotel.
  • VPN support: Check supported protocols and whether your VPN provider or configuration works with the router.
  • Power and portability: Check size, power input, and whether a compatible USB-C charger or power bank can power it.
  • Cellular compatibility: For modem-based or cellular models, verify the exact modem, bands, region, and service requirements.

Compare specifications against your actual use rather than choosing by a peak throughput figure alone. A quoted maximum does not establish real-world speed on a hotel connection, and results depend on the upstream service and conditions. GL.iNet’s travel-router lineup is one example of a vendor product range; specifications and availability can change.
