A three-point night in hockey means one player recorded three scoring points in a single game. In the NHL, a goal is worth one point to the scorer and each credited assist is worth one point, so the total can come from different combinations of goals and assists.

How a player earns three points in one game

The NHL records an individual player point for each goal the player scores and each assist the player receives. Add those goals and assists from the game, and a total of three is a three-point night.

Three points can come from any of these stat lines:

  • One goal and two assists
  • Two goals and one assist
  • Three goals
  • Three assists

The phrase gives the total, not the breakdown. Check the game’s box score or scoring summary to see whether the player scored goals, assisted on them, or did both. NHL team coverage, for example, called Matty Beniers’s one-goal, two-assist performance a three-point night in its recap of Seattle’s game against Anaheim.

How goals and assists are credited

The NHL’s 2025–26 Official Rules, Rule 33, place responsibility for awarding scoring points with the Official Scorer. Each goal counts as one point for the player who scores it. An assist counts as one point for each player credited with helping set up that goal.

One goal can have no more than two assists

A goal may be credited with a maximum of two assists. The NHL states: “An assist is awarded to the player or players (maximum two) who touches the puck prior to the goal scorer, provided no defender plays or possesses the puck in between.” The NHL’s assist glossary also describes this condition: an intervening defender playing or possessing the puck can break the sequence needed for an assist.

Because a single goal can produce at most two assist points, a player cannot get all three points from assists on one goal. The three points must come from contributions across multiple goals. For example, three assists would mean the player assisted on three separate goals.

What a three-point night does not mean

  • It does not necessarily mean three goals. A player can reach three points with assists, goals, or a combination.
  • It does not mean three players scored. The phrase describes one player’s individual total, not how many teammates scored.
  • It does not mean the team earned three standings points. Individual scoring points come from goals and assists; team standings points are a separate measure. The Seattle Kraken’s standings explainer discusses the team-level meaning of standings points.

How to read the stat line

When a recap says a player had a three-point night, look at that player’s goals and assists in the box score. Their sum should be three; the wording alone does not tell you the mix. NHL coverage uses the phrase for more than one combination, as illustrated by its December 5, 2025 Three Stars of the Night video.
