A reverse French manicure places its contrasting curve at the base of the nail, beside the cuticle. A classic French manicure places its contrasting accent at the free edge, or tip. The reverse style is also known as a reverse moon manicure or, in some guides, cuff nails.
What makes a manicure “reverse French”?
It is the accent’s position—not a required color combination—that defines the look. In a classic French manicure, the tip has the contrasting outline or color. In a reverse French, the accent follows a curve at the cuticle-side base. A CBSE Beauty and Wellness curriculum describes a traditional version with white nail beds and a transparent neutral shade over the rest of the nail, but modern designs are not limited to white and pink. CBSE’s Class XI curriculum provides that formal example.
The curve is sometimes called a reverse moon; “cuff nails” is another name used for the style. The accent may be a solid semicircle, glitter, or other nail art. A design with accents at both the base and tip is sometimes described as double-cuffed. Treatwell’s guide shows these variations.
How it differs from a classic French manicure

The classic-versus-reverse distinction is about placement. A sheer base with a pale accent is one option, not a rule: tutorials include multiple accent colors, while runway designs have used bolder, deliberately clashing shades. At Halpern’s Spring/Summer 2020 show, nail artist Marian Newman created a reverse French talon with the accent at the base and pointed tips left clear. British Vogue’s September 15, 2019, coverage describes that specific runway look.

Filled curve or negative space?
In a filled version, polish colors a curved area beside the cuticle. A negative-space variation can leave that base unpainted and use its outline or bare area as the visual focus. The latter blends reverse-French placement with outlined or negative-space nail art, so examples may look different even when they share a cuticle-side emphasis. Marie Claire’s 2026 design roundup describes a reverse negative-space approach.
How to try the look at home
Regular polish
- Start with clean, dry nails and apply a base coat.
- Apply two coats of a base shade and let them dry.
- With a fine nail-art brush, draw a semicircle close to the cuticle using a contrasting polish. Add another adjacent accent color if you want a layered look.
- Once the design is dry, seal it with clear top coat.

Gel polish
A fine detail brush can also create the cuticle-side reverse moon in gel polish. OPI’s tutorial applies its GelColor base and shades, cures them for 30 seconds in an OPI LED light, paints the reverse moon, then applies top coat and cures again. Those timings are specific to the products and lamp in OPI’s GelColor tutorial; follow the cure schedule for your own gel system rather than treating 30 seconds as universal.
