What does PVR stand for?
PVR stands for personal video recorder. The term usually describes a consumer device that records television digitally and stores programming for later playback. The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) describes a PVR as either a standalone device connected to a television or a feature embedded in a set-top box; its definition describes a hard drive, software, and other technology used to record and access programming.
The term can also describe the recording feature rather than a separate box. ITU-T Recommendation J.1 (2024) defines a digital video recorder as a user-operated capability for recording and storing video, audio, and associated content for later playback. That broader definition does not require a particular storage medium.
What does a PVR do?
A PVR captures a TV program and keeps it available for playback, allowing you to watch at a time that suits you. This is called time-shifting. Depending on the equipment or service, you may be able to schedule recordings and use playback controls such as pausing live TV, replaying, rewinding, or fast-forwarding. Not every PVR offers every function.

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) describes PVRs as digitizing broadcast or cable TV onto a hard disk, with functions such as time-shifting, pausing, and fast-forwarding recorded material. These details describe a common local-storage PVR, not a universal requirement for every recording service.
Is a PVR the same as a DVR?
In everyday consumer use, PVR (personal video recorder) and DVR (digital video recorder) are overlapping names for equipment or capabilities that digitally record television or video for later viewing. Ofcom notes that DVRs are sometimes called PVRs, while the CRTC glossary associates the terms. Some sources also use DTR, meaning digital television recorder. The name alone does not tell you which features a particular product supports.

How is a PVR different from a VCR?
A PVR records digitally, commonly to a hard drive in traditional consumer devices. A VCR records analog video onto magnetic tape. Both let viewers keep programs to watch later, but their recording media and playback controls differ; digital PVRs can offer features such as pausing live TV and searching within recordings.

A PVR may be a separate box connected to a television, or recording functionality may be built into a set-top box supplied with a television service. The equipment and supported TV signal can vary by provider, region, and product. Check the specific device or service documentation for compatibility and features rather than assuming that all PVRs work with every broadcast or cable setup.

What to check before choosing or using a PVR
- Recording source: Confirm that the device supports your TV source, such as broadcast or cable, and your provider where relevant.
- Storage model: A local PVR may store recordings on a hard drive, but broader recording services may work differently. Confirm how a specific service stores and accesses programs.
- Functions: Look for the controls you need, such as scheduled recording, pause-live-TV, or simultaneous recordings; availability varies.
- Service and region: Verify current compatibility with your equipment and location, since these details depend on the product and service.
