A midstream energy company operates the infrastructure and services that connect energy production with transportation, storage, and downstream markets. In natural gas, that usually means gathering raw gas from wells, processing it to remove liquids and impurities, and moving pipeline-quality gas through larger transmission systems. Some midstream companies also store gas or handle crude oil, refined products, and natural gas liquids.

What does a midstream energy company do? It sits between the well or other production site and the businesses or consumers that ultimately use the commodity. The company may own physical assets, provide services to other operators, or combine several links in the chain. The exact role depends on its facilities, contracts, commodities, and location.

What does a midstream energy company do?

Midstream describes the connecting part of the energy value chain. A company in this segment may own or operate gathering networks, processing plants, transmission pipelines, storage facilities, or systems that handle several hydrocarbons. It can specialize in one stage or combine multiple stages in an integrated network.

This is a simplified path rather than a universal layout. Real systems can include interconnections, storage fields, compressor stations, treating equipment, liquids infrastructure, and different processing requirements based on the composition of the gas.

A midstream company is therefore not defined by one particular kind of pipe or plant. Its defining role is to move, condition, store, measure, or otherwise connect an energy commodity between production and a market. A gathering operator in a producing basin, a gas processor, and a long-distance pipeline company can all be midstream businesses even though their assets and customers differ.

How gathering, processing, and pipelines fit together

1. Production creates raw gas

At a producing well, the gas is still a raw field stream. Its composition varies by reservoir and may include methane along with water, hydrocarbon liquids, and nonhydrocarbon substances. The stream is not automatically ready for a long-distance transmission pipeline.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That starting composition determines what happens next. A producer may send gas from several wells into a common field system, but the gas still has to meet the requirements of the next facility. The physical connection and the quality of the stream both matter.

2. Gathering lines collect gas from wells

Gathering is the first midstream connection. A gathering system collects gas from one or more production sites and moves it toward a processing plant or an interconnection with a larger pipeline. These lines are generally smaller in diameter and operate at lower pressure than transmission lines.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration describes the function this way: “Gathering systems, primarily made up of small-diameter, low-pressure pipelines, move raw natural gas from the wellhead to a natural gas processing plant or to an interconnection with a larger mainline pipeline.”

A gathering network can contain field lines, collection points, meters, valves, and compression. Its layout depends on the number and location of wells, production rates, terrain, and where processing or mainline capacity is available.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Gathering is often a network rather than a single line. Smaller lines can bring volumes from individual wells to a central collection point, where equipment measures and combines the flows. From there, a larger gathering segment may carry the stream to a plant or pipeline interconnection. Not every field has the same pattern, because well spacing, production levels, terrain, and available downstream capacity vary.

3. Processing prepares gas for transportation

Processing plants treat the raw stream so it meets the specifications required for pipeline transportation and downstream use. Treatment can remove water, hydrocarbon gas liquids, and other contaminants. The exact equipment and sequence depend on what is present in the wellhead gas; not every stream needs the same treatment.

Processing can produce a methane-rich stream suitable for transmission while separating liquids such as natural gas liquids. Those separated products may enter their own transportation, fractionation, storage, or market systems. Processing therefore changes both the quality of the gas and the set of products that leave the facility.

A facility may include separation, dehydration, contaminant-removal, compression, measurement, and liquids-recovery equipment. These are not interchangeable steps performed identically at every plant. The design follows the raw-gas composition and the specifications imposed by the receiving pipeline or customer. A stream that already meets some requirements may need less treatment than one containing more water, liquids, or other unwanted substances.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Processing also creates an important connection between natural-gas and liquids infrastructure. Once liquids are separated, they may be transported or stored through systems designed for those products rather than through the dry-gas transmission network. That is why a company described as a gas processor may also own or contract for liquids handling.

4. Transmission moves pipeline-quality gas over longer distances

After preparation, gas enters high-pressure transmission pipelines. EIA defines transmission pipelines as carrying gas from producing regions toward distribution regions. The wider transmission network also connects processing areas, storage facilities, and consumer service areas.

Transmission systems use larger-diameter pipe, compressor stations, valves, measurement equipment, and interconnections to move gas over long distances. Pressure and flow must be managed so that gas can travel from supply areas to the places where utilities, power plants, industrial users, and other customers take delivery.

Interconnections allow one pipeline system to receive gas from another or route gas toward storage, a distribution system, or a large customer. Compressor stations help maintain pressure as gas moves through the network, while valves and control equipment allow sections to be isolated and flows to be managed. These components make transmission a coordinated system rather than a passive length of pipe.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Storage and distribution connect supply with demand

Storage is another midstream function. Gas can be injected into storage when supply exceeds immediate demand and withdrawn later when consumption rises. Storage may sit along or near transmission networks, allowing the system to balance seasonal or short-term changes in demand.

Storage can be operated as part of a transmission network or as a distinct business connected to several pipelines. Its value is the ability to connect supply available at one time with demand that occurs later. The presence of storage does not mean that every midstream company owns storage; some operators simply connect to facilities owned by another company.

Distribution systems take gas from transmission infrastructure and deliver it through local networks to many end users. A midstream company may own the transmission or storage asset, while another company owns distribution facilities or serves the final customer.

Why the stages are separate but connected

Gathering, processing, transmission, and storage are distinct services, but the system works only when they connect properly. A gathering network needs an outlet at a plant or larger pipeline. A processing plant needs an incoming raw stream and a receiving system for the treated gas and any separated liquids. A transmission line needs supply that meets its specifications and customers or connected systems that can take delivery.

Capacity and quality are therefore practical constraints at each handoff. A field may have producing wells but limited gathering capacity. A gathering system may reach a plant that lacks available processing capacity. A transmission pipeline may be nearby but unable to accept gas that does not meet its requirements. These examples explain why a company can own a strategically important asset without owning every other stage.

Multiple interconnections can give a system more than one route, while a system with one outlet may be more dependent on that connection. The appropriate way to understand a particular operator is to map its assets and connections, not to assume that every midstream network follows the same sequence or has the same alternatives.

Midstream versus upstream and downstream

The three labels describe positions in the energy chain, not a universal corporate structure. One company can operate in more than one segment, and the boundaries between services depend on the assets and contracts involved.

Segment Primary role Typical examples
Upstream Finds and produces hydrocarbons Exploration, drilling, well completion, and production at the wellhead
Midstream Connects production with markets Gathering, processing, transmission, storage, and related handling infrastructure
Downstream Turns commodities into usable products and delivers them to end markets Refining, fuel distribution, local gas delivery, retail, and industrial or commercial supply

For natural gas, the midstream portion is easiest to see between the wellhead and the local distribution or end-use network. Upstream produces the raw material; midstream collects, treats, transports, and stores it; downstream uses or sells the resulting gas and liquid products.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The labels can overlap in an integrated company. A producer may own gathering lines, a pipeline operator may own storage, and a larger energy company may operate assets in upstream, midstream, and downstream segments. Segment names are useful for orientation, but an asset list and current company disclosures provide the more precise description.

What assets can a midstream company own?

Gathering networks

Gathering networks consist of field pipelines and associated collection facilities. They link multiple wells to a central point, processing plant, or larger pipeline. Their economics and operating requirements differ from those of long-distance transmission because they serve a producing area rather than a broad regional corridor.

Associated equipment can include meters, valves, collection points, and compression. The network may expand as wells are added or production patterns change, although the specific development plan depends on the operator and available capacity.

Processing and treating plants

Processing facilities remove components that would interfere with transportation or end use and separate marketable liquids where appropriate. A plant may include separation, dehydration, contaminant-removal, compression, measurement, and liquids-recovery equipment. The plant’s configuration follows the raw gas composition and the specifications imposed by the receiving pipeline or customer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Some facilities primarily prepare gas for a pipeline, while others also recover and route liquids. The same company can own the plant and related liquids infrastructure or can send separated products to another operator under a separate arrangement.

Transmission pipelines and compressor stations

Transmission pipelines form the long-distance backbone. Compressor stations raise or maintain pressure so gas can continue through the system. Metering stations measure receipts and deliveries, while valves and control systems allow operators to isolate sections, manage flows, and respond to operating conditions.

Transmission assets may connect producing regions with distribution regions, storage facilities, processing areas, and other pipelines. Their location and interconnections help determine which markets a company can serve.

Storage facilities

Storage facilities hold gas for later withdrawal and can improve the system’s ability to respond to changing demand. Storage may be operated as part of a transmission network or as a distinct business connected to several pipelines.

A storage operator’s role is different from that of a gathering operator even when both are described as midstream. One connects near-term production to a processing or transmission outlet; the other connects available supply with later demand.

Liquids and other hydrocarbon infrastructure

Some midstream businesses handle crude oil, refined products, or natural gas liquids in addition to natural gas. Those assets can include gathering lines, trunk pipelines, terminals, fractionation facilities, tanks, and other transport or storage equipment. The term “midstream” therefore describes a function and position in the chain rather than one fixed asset class.

Because commodities have different specifications and handling needs, a company serving several products may operate separate systems for each one. A natural-gas pipeline statistic should not automatically be treated as a measure of a company’s crude-oil or liquids business.

How to compare two midstream energy companies

Do not compare companies solely by pipeline mileage or by the word “midstream” in a corporate description. Start with what each operator actually owns, where the assets are located, and which commodities move through them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Comparison question Why it matters
Which commodities are handled? Natural gas, crude oil, refined products, and natural gas liquids have different equipment, specifications, markets, and operating requirements.
Which services are provided? A gathering-only operator has a different role from a company that also processes gas, owns transmission capacity, or operates storage.
Where are the assets? Regions determine which production basins, pipelines, storage sites, processing plants, and demand centers are connected.
Who are the customers? Producers, utilities, power generators, industrial users, marketers, and other pipeline operators can have different service needs.
What do current disclosures say about contracts? Contract terms, volume commitments, rates, duration, and exposure to commodity prices vary by company and asset; no single model applies to every midstream business.
How are the assets regulated? Applicable rules depend on the asset, commodity, location, and legal classification. “Gathering” does not automatically mean an asset is exempt from regulation.

Official service descriptions establish what gathering, processing, transportation, and storage do. They do not establish one revenue model or risk profile for every company. A company may earn fees for services, own commodity inventories, sell separated liquids, or use a mixture of arrangements. Those details must be checked in the operator’s current filings and applicable regulatory materials.

When comparing reported volumes, check whether the figures refer to inlet gas, processed gas, transported gas, storage injections, or withdrawals. Also check the period and geography. A larger mileage figure does not by itself show higher throughput, broader market access, or better performance.

How large is the U.S. natural-gas pipeline system?

Scale figures need a date and a defined scope:

  • The U.S. Energy Information Administration reports approximately 3 million miles of natural-gas mainline and other pipelines. Its explainer, accessed in 2026, presents that network scale alongside activity reported for 2022.
  • EIA reports that the U.S. network delivered about 29.2 trillion cubic feet of natural gas to approximately 78.3 million consumers in 2022.
  • A Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration report published in 2024 cites a 2019 study estimating more than 340,000 miles of natural-gas gathering pipeline and several thousand compressor stations. This is a gathering-specific estimate and should not be added mechanically to EIA’s network-wide mileage figure.

The figures describe different scopes and reporting periods. They show the physical scale of the U.S. system, not the size or performance of any particular company.

The EIA mileage figure covers the broader natural-gas pipeline network, while the PHMSA passage supplies a separate gathering estimate tied to a cited 2019 study. Readers should keep those definitions separate when interpreting totals, market share, or an operator’s stated footprint.

How gathering pipelines are regulated

PHMSA describes gathering lines as pipelines that carry crude oil or natural gas from a production site to a central collection point. The agency notes that these lines generally operate at relatively low pressures and flow rates and are smaller than transmission lines.

PHMSA also states that gathering pipelines are regulated under federal pipeline-safety rules subject to specific exceptions. That qualification matters: a line’s label, location, construction, operating characteristics, and the applicable definition all affect how rules apply. “Gathering” should not be used as shorthand for an automatic exemption.

For a specific project, operator, or incident, the relevant federal rules, state requirements, permits, and current agency interpretations must be reviewed directly. A general description of midstream infrastructure cannot determine the legal classification of an individual line.

The same caution applies when comparing gathering with transmission. Size and pressure are useful general descriptions, but they do not replace the legal definitions and facts used by the relevant agencies. A company can own assets with different classifications and obligations within one operating area.

What happens when gas moves through a midstream system?

  1. Receipt at the wellhead: Raw gas leaves one or more producing wells and enters field equipment.
  2. Collection: Gathering lines combine flows and carry the stream toward a processing plant or larger pipeline connection.
  3. Measurement and control: Meters, valves, and control equipment monitor receipts, pressure, and flow before or within the gathering system.
  4. Treatment and separation: A processing plant removes water and other unwanted components and may recover hydrocarbon liquids.
  5. Pipeline acceptance: Gas that meets the receiving system’s specifications enters a transmission pipeline.
  6. Long-distance movement: Compressor stations and valves help move the gas toward storage, distribution networks, or another interconnection.
  7. Storage or delivery: Gas may be injected into storage, withdrawn later, sent to a distribution system, or delivered directly to a large customer.

Not every molecule follows every step. Some gas can move from gathering directly to a larger pipeline if it already meets the receiving system’s requirements, while other streams need more extensive treatment or may be routed to additional facilities.

At each handoff, measurement and control equipment helps establish how much gas is received, processed, transported, stored, or delivered. The exact equipment and sequence vary by system, but the purpose is to keep flows and quality within the requirements of the next connected facility.

Common misunderstandings about midstream companies

“Midstream” means only pipelines

Pipelines are central, but midstream can also include gathering, processing, compression, storage, terminals, measurement, and liquids handling. A company may own facilities that never look like a long-distance pipeline yet still perform a midstream function.

Every midstream company is insulated from commodity prices

Exposure depends on the company, asset, and contract. Some arrangements charge for transportation or processing, while others involve commodity ownership, liquids sales, inventory, or volume commitments. A broad sector label cannot establish how revenue responds to prices or throughput.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

All gathering lines have the same legal status

Gathering lines are subject to specific regulatory definitions and exceptions. Their treatment can differ based on facts and jurisdiction, so a general statement about gathering should not be applied automatically to a particular line.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Processing always produces the same outputs

Raw-gas composition varies. One stream may need dehydration or contaminant removal, while another may require additional separation or liquids recovery. The plant’s design and outputs depend on the input gas and the receiving specifications.

The three segments are always separate companies

Corporate boundaries do not necessarily match the physical chain. One operator can own gathering and processing, another can own transmission, and a third can operate distribution. An integrated company can own several stages at once.

More pipeline miles always means a larger business

Mileage does not reveal the commodity, capacity, throughput, customer mix, contract terms, or regulatory status of the assets. A shorter system with processing or storage may perform a different and potentially more valuable role than a longer gathering network. Compare like with like and read the operator’s current disclosures.

Questions to ask when evaluating a midstream operator

  • Does the company gather gas, process it, transport it, store it, or provide several of those services?
  • Which basins, states, or demand centers are connected to its assets?
  • What commodities move through the system, and are liquids separated or sold?
  • Are facilities connected to multiple pipelines or customers, or dependent on one route?
  • What do the latest company disclosures say about capacity, contracts, volumes, and commodity exposure?
  • Which federal and state rules apply to each asset, especially where gathering and transmission classifications differ?
  • Are statistics being quoted for the same commodity, geography, asset type, and reporting year?
  • Where are the key handoffs between gathering, processing, transmission, storage, and distribution?

Key takeaway

A midstream energy company is the connective infrastructure between production and use. In the clearest natural-gas example, gathering lines collect raw gas, processing plants make it suitable for transportation and may separate liquids, transmission pipelines carry it over longer distances, and storage or distribution systems move it toward later use. The exact assets, customers, contracts, commodity exposure, and regulatory obligations are company- and location-specific, so those details must be checked before drawing conclusions about a named operator.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does a midstream energy company do?

It connects energy production with transportation, storage, and downstream markets. In natural gas, that commonly includes gathering raw gas, processing it, moving it through transmission pipelines, and sometimes storing it or handling separated liquids.

What is the difference between upstream, midstream, and downstream?

Upstream companies find and produce hydrocarbons. Midstream companies gather, process, transport, store, and otherwise connect those commodities to markets. Downstream businesses refine, distribute, sell, or use the resulting products. One company can operate in more than one segment.

How do gathering, processing, and pipelines fit together?

Gathering lines move raw gas from wells to a processing plant or larger pipeline. Processing removes water, liquids, and other unwanted components as needed. Transmission pipelines then move pipeline-quality gas over longer distances toward storage, distribution systems, or customers.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are gathering lines smaller than transmission pipelines?

Generally, yes. EIA describes gathering systems as primarily small-diameter, low-pressure pipelines, while transmission pipelines carry gas over longer distances at higher pressure. The legal classification of a particular line still depends on applicable definitions and facts.

Does every natural-gas stream need the same processing?

No. Raw-gas composition varies. The required treatment depends on the water, hydrocarbon liquids, nonhydrocarbon substances, and other characteristics of the stream, as well as the specifications of the receiving pipeline or customer.

Are all midstream companies fee-based or protected from commodity prices?

No single revenue model applies to every company. Contract terms can include service fees, volume commitments, commodity ownership, liquids sales, inventory, or combinations of arrangements. Current company disclosures are needed to assess exposure.

How large is the U.S. natural-gas pipeline network?

EIA reports approximately 3 million miles of natural-gas mainline and other pipelines and says the network delivered about 29.2 trillion cubic feet to approximately 78.3 million consumers in 2022. PHMSA separately cites a 2019 estimate of more than 340,000 miles of gathering pipeline and several thousand compressor stations.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are gathering pipelines exempt from pipeline-safety rules?

Not automatically. PHMSA states that gathering pipelines are regulated under federal pipeline-safety rules subject to specific exceptions. The applicable treatment depends on the line’s facts, classification, jurisdiction, and current rules.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Midstream energy companies connect production with energy markets. Gathering collects raw gas, processing prepares it and may separate liquids, transmission moves pipeline-quality gas over longer distances, and storage or distribution connects supply with later use. Asset ownership, contracts, commodity exposure, and regulation vary by operator and location.
