A godling in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is a childlike woodland creature that guards its home territory near human settlements. Geralt encounters Johnny in Velen and Sarah in Novigrad; what he decides about Sarah affects whether she later appears with Johnny at Bald Mountain.
What is a godling in The Witcher 3?
The game’s bestiary describes godlings as mischievous, childlike creatures that live in burrows or moss-covered hollow stumps near settlements. They are classified among the game’s relict creatures and can be mistaken for lutins. Their defining trait is a close bond with their home: they look after people and animals living nearby.
The bestiary says godlings are drawn to joy and innocence, usually reveal themselves to children, and value peace and quiet. In return for small acts of care, they appreciate respect and offerings such as food or cast-off tools. Rudeness can offend them. These are descriptions of the fictional creatures in the game, not evidence about real-world folklore.
“Godlings (sometimes mistaken for lutin) are woodland creatures dwelling in burrows and moss-covered hollow stumps on the outskirts of human settlements. They are similar to children in behavior and appearance, and, like children, delight in mischief. Godlings are deeply rooted in their home territory and perform acts of care and guardianship to those dwelling near their burrows.”

Who are Johnny and Sarah?
Johnny and Sarah are the two godlings central to these quests. Johnny’s story is tied to Geralt’s search connected to Ciri in Velen; Sarah’s is tied to a house believed to be haunted in Novigrad.

What happens if Geralt sends Sarah away or lets her stay?
During Novigrad Dreaming, Geralt can either make Sarah leave the house or allow her to remain with Corinne Tilly. The choice affects Sarah’s later appearance, not what kind of creature she is.

- If Geralt lets Sarah stay: she remains with Corinne Tilly and does not appear with Johnny at Bald Mountain; Johnny is there alone in that scene.
The game references describe Sarah as Johnny’s friend in the first outcome, not as a relative. A Prima Games Complete Edition guide also describes the Sarah-dependent scene.
What does Johnny do in the story?
Geralt meets Johnny in Velen while following the trail connected to Ciri. After helping Johnny regain his voice, Geralt receives his help reaching the Ladies of the Wood. Johnny later helps Geralt and Ciri at Bald Mountain. His storyline shows the godling’s helpful, protective side alongside the mischief described in the bestiary.

Are there other godlings in The Witcher 3?
The game’s godling reference also lists an unnamed godling near Fyresdal. The available account does not establish a detailed quest story for that encounter, so it cannot be meaningfully compared with Johnny and Sarah.

This is an in-world reflection on the changing setting, not a statement by a real-world folklore authority. The GamesLantern godlings bestiary page likewise describes their guardianship and their departure when a settlement changes.
