A crosspoint switch is a controllable grid of connections: each input can be routed to selected outputs by enabling the relevant intersections in the matrix. Unlike a fixed one-input/one-output switch, it can create multiple signal paths, and a non-blocking design can connect any free input to any free output without an unrelated connection getting in the way.

How a crosspoint switch routes signals

Picture inputs running down one side of a grid and outputs across the other. A controllable switch sits at each crossing. The controller closes selected intersections to establish routes; opening them removes those routes. This lets equipment select signal paths without changing other paths, a useful property when several data streams, clock sources, or protocols must share routing hardware.

“Non-blocking” describes a matrix in which an available input can reach an available output without an existing, unrelated connection preventing it. It does not mean every signal can be connected to every output simultaneously: the device’s architecture and routing rules determine which combinations are supported.

Crosspoint switch vs. multiplexer

A multiplexer selects one of several inputs for a shared output. A crosspoint is a matrix of selectable input-to-output intersections, so it can route different inputs to different outputs at the same time, subject to the device’s capabilities. A simple switch may provide just one defined path or a small set of choices; the crosspoint’s matrix makes its routing options explicit and scalable.

Where crosspoint switches are used

Digital networking and router equipment is a major application. Crosspoints also appear in communications backplanes, fault-tolerant telecom and datacom systems, digital video equipment, broadcast routers, HDMI switchers, and datacenter physical-layer switches. The right device depends on the signal and routing job: video matrix parts and high-speed serial-data crosspoints are not interchangeable just because both have inputs and outputs.

Examples show how widely the term applies

Analog video: MAX456

Analog Devices’ MAX456 is an 8×8 buffered video crosspoint with a specified 35-MHz bandwidth. The manufacturer lists video editing, video security systems, and video test equipment as applications. Its buffering and bandwidth make it a different class of part from a high-speed serial-data crosspoint.

High-speed digital and large matrices

MACOM’s portfolio page lists matrix sizes from 2×2 to 288×288 and data rates from 3.2 Gbps to 28 Gbps, with applications including video broadcast routers, switchers, HDMI switchers, and datacenter physical-layer switches. Analog Devices’ crosspoint portfolio lists the HMC857 at 14 Gbps in a 2×2 configuration and the ADN4612 at 11.3 Gbps in a 12×12 configuration. These examples illustrate the range of available architectures; they are not a like-for-like performance comparison.

Specifications to compare before choosing one

Start with the signal path the system actually needs, then compare devices against that requirement. Crosspoint specifications vary substantially between analog video and high-speed digital families.

  • Signal type and electrical compatibility: Confirm analog or digital operation, signaling levels, binary signaling requirements, and compatibility with the source and destination. Analog Devices describes its digital crosspoints as asynchronous and protocol-agnostic within their rated data-rate and binary-signaling limits; that does not remove the need to meet electrical and rate requirements.
  • Matrix size and connection behavior: Check input and output counts, whether outputs can be routed independently, and whether the design is non-blocking for the connection patterns you need.
  • Bandwidth or data rate: For analog video, verify bandwidth. For serial digital signals, check the supported data rate and compatibility with the intended lanes and standard.
  • Signal conditioning and loss: For high-speed serial links, evaluate equalization or pre-emphasis where offered, jitter, insertion loss, and the full link loss budget. For video, check whether the part can drive the intended cable and load.
  • Isolation and crosstalk: These affect how much an active route can disturb other channels. Compare the figures under the operating conditions relevant to the design.
  • Buffering and output drive: Buffered video devices can help drive loads or cables; confirm the output requirements rather than assuming every matrix provides equivalent drive capability.
  • Switching time and control: Determine how quickly a route must change and how the device is programmed, including the available control interface.
  • Power, thermal limits, and package density: Account for channel count, board space, cooling, and total power in the intended system, not only the individual device’s headline speed.

Check the complete system, not just the headline rate

A crosspoint sits within a signal chain, so its maximum rate or bandwidth alone cannot establish that the system will work. Match the input and output electrical levels, account for cable and board losses, and verify that the source, switch, and receiver satisfy the same signaling and timing requirements. The relevant data sheet should also be checked for lifecycle status, operating conditions, and current availability before a design depends on a specific part.
