A computer case fan is a powered fan mounted in or on a PC chassis to move air through the case. It helps draw cooler air in and carry warmer air out, supporting airflow around components that produce heat. Unlike a CPU cooler fan, it ventilates the chassis rather than serving an individual processor cooler.
What a computer case fan does
Case fans circulate air through the PC chassis. In a typical setup, some fans bring air into the case as intake, while others push air out as exhaust. This airflow helps move heat away from components, but a case fan is not the same thing as a CPU cooler fan: the latter is attached to a processor cooling assembly.
Intel identifies the front, rear, and top of a case as common fan-mount locations. The rear position is generally used for exhaust, but the intended direction depends on the fan’s orientation and the case’s airflow layout. Check the fan markings or manufacturer instructions before mounting it. Intel’s PC cooling guidance explains common placement and orientation.

These labels describe design priorities, not a universal quality ranking. Choose according to the path the fan needs to move air through.

| Design emphasis | Best suited to |
|---|---|
| Airflow-oriented | Moving air through a relatively open path, such as an unobstructed case vent. |
| Static-pressure-oriented | Pushing air through resistance, such as radiator fins, heatsinks, or a constrained space. |
Intel’s cooling guide and Corsair’s case fan buying guide describe these different uses. A pressure-focused fan is not automatically better for every location; the obstruction and mounting position matter.
How to check whether a case fan will fit
Fan size is a physical compatibility requirement. Intel describes 120 mm as a common case-fan size, and Corsair’s product listings include both 120 mm and 140 mm models. Those examples do not mean either size fits every PC.
Rank #2
- HIGH STATIC PRESSURE: Efficient even with resistance – the generated airflow easily penetrates dense radiators, narrow perforated panels and mesh structures and ensures reliable cooling
- PWM CONTROL WITH WIDE SPEED RANGE: The speed can be progressively adjusted up to 3000 rpm via the 4-pin PWM connection – the fan stops completely at less than 5% PWM
- PRECISE MANUFACTURING FOR MAXIMUM SMOOTH RUNNING: Minimal gaps, automatic balancing and high-precision measurement noticeably reduce vibrations – for quiet, efficient and long-lasting performance
- SMOOTH-RUNNING FLUID DYNAMIC BEARING (FDB): The self-lubricating bearing minimizes noise during operation – ideal for quiet, efficient cooling and a long, reliable service life
- NEW FAN BLADE DESIGN FOR MORE PERFORMANCE: The redesigned rotor blades offer an optimal balance of performance and low noise – especially efficient at low speeds
- Check the case manual or specifications for supported fan-mount sizes and locations.
- Confirm the fan’s thickness and clearance from nearby components or panels.
- Match the fan’s intended airflow direction to its intake or exhaust position.
For examples of available sizes, see Corsair’s case-fan listings; treat product dimensions as specifications for those models, not as a compatibility guide for your case.
3-pin and 4-pin fan connectors
A 3-pin fan generally uses voltage control to adjust speed. A 4-pin PWM fan adds a control signal for speed adjustment. The connector alone does not guarantee that a fan will use the control method you expect: check your motherboard or fan controller documentation for supported header modes and settings. Corsair outlines the distinction in its fan buying guide.

- 【High Performance Cooling Fan】 Automatic speed control of the motherboard through the 4PIN PWM fan cable interface, which can determine the speed according to the temperature of the motherboard, with a maximum speed of 1550RPM. Configured with up to 55cm of cable for PWM series control of fans, ideal for cases and CPU coolers.
- 【Quality Bearings】The carefully developed quality S-FDB bearings solve the problem of pc cooling fan blade shaking in lifting mode, keeping fan noise to a minimum while providing maximum cooling performance when needed and extending the life of the fan.
- [Excellent LED light] The high-brightness LED atomizing argb fan blade can effectively reflect the light, making the ARGB lighting effect softer, and it matches the cooler and case more perfectly. Up to 17 modes of light effects with ARGB support, color can be managed and synchronized through the port on motherboard.
- 【Silent Fan Size】 Model: TL-C12C-S X5, Size: 120*120*25mm, Speed: 1550RPM±10%, Noise ≤ 25.6dBA Connector: 4pin pwm, Current: 0.20A, Air Pressure: 1.53mm H2O, Air Flow: 66.17CFM, Higher air flow for improved cooling performance.
- 【Perfect Match】The PC fan can be used not only as a case fan, but is also suitable for use with a cpu cooler to create a cooling effect together, which can take away the dry heat from the case and the high temperature generated by the CPU in operation, allowing for maximum cooling; Ideal for cases, radiators and CPU coolers.
What to compare when choosing a case fan
Compare the fan against the needs of its specific mounting position rather than looking for one universally best option.
- Fit: The case must support the fan’s size and thickness, with enough clearance.
- Air path: Consider airflow emphasis for open paths and static-pressure emphasis for restrictive ones.
- Control: Match 3-pin voltage control or 4-pin PWM to the motherboard or controller’s supported mode.
- Noise and airflow specifications: Consider the manufacturer’s stated specifications alongside fit and intended use. There is no universal noise or performance threshold established here.
These are selection criteria, not a model ranking: the available guidance does not provide controlled comparative tests or establish a quietest, most effective, or universally best fan.
