It reports operating a small-scale facility that extracts boron from colemanite ore through in-situ leaching and processes the solution into boric acid. Its proposed commercial Phase 1 plant is designed to make 130,000 short tons of boric acid per year, but that is a study target—not current commercial output.
What 5E Advanced Materials does
5E Advanced Materials holds the Fort Cady project in southern California through its wholly owned subsidiary, 5E Boron Americas. The company describes itself as development-stage in its Form 10-K for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2026. Its aim is to extract boron-bearing minerals and turn them into industrial boric acid and related products.
Here, “boron products” means refined borates and boron derivatives, not elemental boron metal. 5E identifies potential end markets including glass, ceramics, agriculture, and specialty chemicals; those are industrial markets rather than consumer products.
How the Fort Cady process makes boric acid
1. The source mineral is colemanite
Fort Cady’s boron occurs in colemanite, a hydrated calcium borate mineral. The deposit is deep, and the project’s technical report describes extracting the mineral values without conventional open-pit mining.

2. In-situ leaching brings boron into solution
The 2025 pre-feasibility technical report describes in-situ leaching (ISL) using hydrochloric-acid solution. The solution circulates through the deposit, dissolving targeted minerals and producing a boron-bearing liquid known as pregnant leach solution.
3. The leach solution is processed into products
The pregnant leach solution is processed at a chemical facility to produce boric acid. The report also describes calcium chloride and gypsum as calcium-based co-products. The process therefore has distinct extraction and chemical-processing stages: ISL obtains a mineral-bearing solution, and the facility converts that solution into saleable products.

What is operating, and what is still planned?
5E reports that it received EPA authorization for in-situ mining in November 2023, began extraction in January 2024, and started operating its small-scale facility in April 2024. The company’s 2026 Form 10-K says that small-scale facility is operating. The August 2025 technical report describes production at approximately one short ton of boric acid per day at the time covered by the report.
That small-scale operation should not be confused with the proposed Phase 1 commercial plant. The commercial facility and its capacity are design and economic-study figures, not evidence that 5E currently produces at commercial scale.

What the Phase 1 study figures mean
The August 2025 Fort Cady SK-1300 pre-feasibility technical report sets out a proposed Phase 1 design and an economic model. Its headline figures are estimates under the report’s assumptions and qualifications, not realized operating results or guarantees.

These values belong to the 2025 technical report and should be understood within its scope, assumptions, and qualifications. They do not establish that the proposed plant has been financed, built, or brought into commercial production.

What remains before commercial-scale production?
5E’s development progress page says it is pursuing a final investment decision in fiscal 2026, subject to financing, final engineering, and board approval. A final investment decision is a milestone, not the same as completed construction or commercial operation.
The company also reports that 14 customers have qualified its product and that it conducted a 20-ton commercial tank trial. These are company-reported customer and product-development milestones, not independent confirmation of future sales volumes or commercial plant performance.
