HPE planned to integrate Plexxi’s network fabric with SimpliVity hyperconverged infrastructure and Synergy composable infrastructure. HPE later said Plexxi was incorporated into SimpliVity’s composable fabric; the available record does not establish the status of every planned integration or Plexxi-branded product.
What Plexxi brought to HPE
Plexxi developed a software-defined network fabric for data centers. Contemporary reporting described its software as automating network management and adjusting bandwidth to match workload needs. Ric Lewis, then HPE’s senior vice president and general manager of its software-defined and cloud group, described it as a “next-generation data network fabric that can create or re-balance bandwidth to workload needs.” Data Center Knowledge reported the transaction and quoted Lewis on May 15, 2018.
The intended fit was to connect network behavior more closely to the infrastructure running workloads. HPE named two targets: SimpliVity, its hyperconverged infrastructure, and Synergy, its composable infrastructure. The announcement positioned the fabric for private, public, and hybrid-cloud environments, but that positioning should not be read as proof that every environment or integration was delivered.
What HPE announced—and what remained undisclosed
- Announcement: HPE said it had agreed to acquire Plexxi on May 15, 2018. HPE’s announcement and its acquisitions listing identify the transaction as a software-defined network data-fabric acquisition.
- Deal terms: The contemporaneous report said the financial terms were not disclosed.
- Expected timing: At announcement, HPE expected the deal to close in its fiscal third quarter, which ended July 31, 2018. This was a forecast, not a confirmation of the actual closing date.
What the later record says about integration
HPE’s 2019 annual-meeting transcript later stated that Plexxi had been incorporated into SimpliVity’s composable fabric. The transcript is available through HPE Investor Relations. This supports a specific conclusion about SimpliVity, not a broader claim that every part of the original product plan was completed.

The deal signaled HPE’s intent to add programmable, workload-aware networking to its infrastructure portfolio. The practical idea was to make network capacity more responsive to changing application demands, while aligning the network with hyperconverged or composable systems. It was a strategic integration move, rather than evidence by itself of a new standalone Plexxi product line or a measurable performance improvement.
