There was no official Nintendo 64 release of Halo. The hardware setup people mean is Halo-64, an unofficial community project intended to run on real N64 hardware. The reported setup requires a Nintendo 64 console, the Nintendo 64 8MB Expansion Pak, and a copy of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved. You also need one or more standard N64 controllers for multiplayer. A Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak is optional because Halo-64 supports rumble feedback.
This is not an N64 cartridge that contains the complete Xbox game. Halo-64 is a fan project with multiplayer-oriented features, including split-screen matches, bots and Firefight; it does not include the original campaign.
The hardware list at a glance
Use this checklist before trying to assemble a Halo-64 setup. The requirements below are the ones identified in the Windows Central report describing the project; anything not marked required is an enhancement rather than a prerequisite.

The report confirms support for up to four-player split-screen, so a four-player session needs four usable N64 controllers. It does not identify a special controller model beyond normal N64 input hardware.

Why Halo on N64 is unofficial
Microsoft’s 2003 release announcement described Halo for Windows as an extension of the original Xbox game and presented the original title as a game that helped establish the Xbox system. That announcement did not describe an N64 edition.
Microsoft’s 2025 announcement for Halo: Campaign Evolved lists Xbox Series X|S, Xbox on PC, Steam, PlayStation 5, Xbox Cloud Gaming and Xbox Play Anywhere. Nintendo 64 is not among those platforms. Consequently, an N64 setup is not an officially licensed Nintendo release; it is based on the community-made Halo-64 project.
This distinction matters when shopping. Looking for a “Halo N64 cartridge” can lead to reproduction or fan-made items, but the reported setup does not depend on an official cartridge. It depends on the N64 hardware, the required Expansion Pak and an original Xbox copy of Combat Evolved.
Required component details
1. A working Nintendo 64
Halo-64 is described as running on original Nintendo 64 hardware rather than on an emulator or a modern console port. The console is therefore the base system in the setup. Check that it starts reliably, accepts controllers and can display a stable picture before troubleshooting the fan project itself.

The project report does not specify a particular N64 regional model or a special video modification. It also does not name a replacement console, adapter or accessory that can substitute for the N64.
2. The 8MB Expansion Pak
The Nintendo 64 8MB Expansion Pak is explicitly required. Without the required memory configuration, the reported Halo-64 setup is not expected to run correctly.
When searching listings, use the terms “Nintendo 64 8MB Expansion Pak” or “N64 Expansion Pak.” Confirm that the listing is for the memory accessory rather than an ordinary Controller Pak, which serves a different purpose. If a seller does not clearly identify the item as an Expansion Pak, verify the label and compatibility before buying.

3. An original Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved
Windows Central’s report says a copy of the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved is needed to get Halo-64 working. This is source software for the fan project, not an N64 game cartridge. A PC release, a later remaster or a digital entitlement is not identified in the report as a substitute.

Use a copy you are entitled to use and follow the Halo-64 project’s own technical instructions for how that source is handled. The available report establishes the required edition, but it does not publish a complete extraction, installation or conversion procedure.
4. N64 controllers
The project supports local split-screen multiplayer. You need one normal N64 controller for a single player and one controller per participant for a local match. Because the reported maximum is four players, a full four-player session requires four controllers and enough seating and screen space for everyone.
The report does not require a first-party controller, a particular revision or an alternative USB gamepad. Standard N64 input hardware is the documented baseline.

Halo-64 supports Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak feedback. Treat the Rumble Pak as an optional accessory: it adds physical vibration, but it is not listed as a condition for launching the project or playing without rumble.

A practical setup sequence
The exact Halo-64 distribution and loading method can change with the project. The following sequence separates the hardware checks that are established from project-specific steps that must be followed in the version you obtain.
- Verify the console. Confirm that the Nintendo 64 powers on, produces a picture and recognizes controller input.
- Install the required memory accessory. Fit a compatible Nintendo 64 8MB Expansion Pak and make sure it is seated correctly. Halo-64’s reported requirements specifically call for this accessory.
- Prepare the source software. Have an original Xbox copy of Halo: Combat Evolved available. Do not assume that an N64 cartridge, a PC disc or a later remaster fulfills the stated requirement.
- Follow the current Halo-64 loading instructions. The report confirms that the Xbox copy is needed, but it does not define every file-handling or launch step. Use the instructions supplied with the particular fan-project build rather than guessing at a format.
- Connect controllers for the intended mode. Use one controller for solo testing, then add controllers one at a time when setting up split-screen play. For four-player play, connect four working N64 controllers.
- Add rumble only if wanted. Insert a compatible Rumble Pak when you want vibration feedback. Remove it from the checklist if you are diagnosing a boot or input problem, because rumble is optional.
- Test a local match before inviting players. Verify that the project reaches its multiplayer menus, detects each controller and starts a map. This isolates console, memory and input problems before a longer session.
What Halo-64 includes
The reported fan project is focused on multiplayer rather than reproducing the full Xbox campaign. Its documented features are:
- All 13 multiplayer maps.
- Up to four-player split-screen play.
- Computer-controlled bots.
- Team Slayer.
- Capture the Flag.
- Firefight.
- Nintendo 64 Rumble Pak feedback.
The original Halo: Combat Evolved campaign is not included. If your goal is the story mode, an N64 setup will not provide that experience; the project is intended for local multiplayer-style play and related modes.
Common buying mistakes and troubleshooting checks
Buying a Controller Pak instead of an Expansion Pak
These accessories are not interchangeable. A Controller Pak is for saved data, while the Halo-64 report specifically names the 8MB Expansion Pak as required memory hardware. Recheck the product name and photographs before purchasing.

Assuming any Halo disc will work
The stated source requirement is the original Xbox version of Halo: Combat Evolved. A disc from another Xbox generation, a PC edition or a modern digital release should not be treated as equivalent unless the Halo-64 project explicitly says so.
Expecting an official cartridge
There is no documented official Nintendo 64 Halo release from Microsoft or Nintendo. A cartridge advertised as “Halo N64” is therefore not the official Xbox game on an authorized N64 format. The fan project’s requirement for an original Xbox copy reinforces that it is not a conventional cartridge release.
Trying to launch without the Expansion Pak
Because the Expansion Pak is a stated requirement, remove it from the list of suspected causes only after confirming that it is installed and recognized. If the console fails before the project starts, test the N64 with another known-working game or configuration to separate a general hardware fault from a Halo-64 issue.

Adding four players before testing one
Start with one controller and a basic launch test. If that works, add the remaining controllers individually. This makes it easier to identify a bad controller, connector or input port without confusing it with a software problem.
Expecting rumble to be mandatory
Rumble is an enhancement. A missing Rumble Pak should remove vibration, not define whether the project is fundamentally playable. Test the core setup first, then add rumble after controls and maps work.
How the N64 option compares with official Halo platforms
The choice depends on whether you want a fan-made local multiplayer experiment or an officially distributed Halo experience. The following comparison uses only the platform information documented by Microsoft and the Halo-64 report.

The N64 project is therefore best understood as a hardware-focused fan experiment: it uses an original console and adds a multiplayer interpretation of Halo, while official releases remain the route for the campaign and licensed platform support.
