When you remove a microSD card from a Samsung phone, the phone can no longer access files stored on that card. Unmount the card in Settings before removing it: pulling it while the phone is reading or writing data can cause data loss or damage. Removal alone does not format the card or erase files on the phone’s internal storage.
What happens when you remove an SD card from a Samsung phone?
Files saved on the card become unavailable to the phone until you reinsert it. This includes photos and other files stored there. The phone’s internal storage is separate; Samsung’s instructions distinguish files on the phone from files on the card and do not describe physical removal as erasing internal storage.
If an app was moved to the card, its behavior may change while the card is out. Samsung notes that not every app can be moved and some moved apps still keep data in internal storage, so what happens to a particular app depends on the app and device.
How to remove the card safely
- Unmount it in the phone’s software. Samsung’s US support route is Settings > Device care > Storage > More options > Storage settings. Select the SD card and tap Unmount. See Samsung’s instructions for removing an SD card.
- Wait until the phone has stopped using it. Do not remove the card during a file transfer or while the phone is accessing card data.
- Open the tray. Insert the ejector tool into the outlined SIM/microSD tray opening, pull out the tray, remove the card, and reinsert the tray. Samsung cautions against inserting the tool into a microphone or speaker hole. The ejector tool is supplied with the device; if it is missing, a replacement may be available from a carrier or electronics retailer.
Menu names and steps can vary by phone and Android version. Samsung Japan’s current example is for a Galaxy A25 running Android 15 / One UI 7 and includes unmounting through My Files. If the US Settings route does not match your screen, check the phone’s Storage or My Files menu and its model-specific support instructions: Samsung Japan’s SD-card removal guide.

Can you remove the SD card while the phone is on?
Unmount the card first, rather than pulling it while it is mounted. Samsung’s Galaxy S9+ manual gives this model-specific warning: “Do not remove a card while the device is transferring or accessing information, as this could result in loss of data and/or damage to the card or device.” Samsung Japan also warns that removing a card without unmounting it can damage saved data or make the card unusable. The safe rule is to unmount it and avoid removal during any transfer or access.
Will removing the card delete your photos?
Removing the card does not itself format it. Photos stored on the card remain on that card, but the phone cannot access them while it is out. Reinsert it to make them available again. Formatting is a separate action, and Samsung says it erases all data currently on the card. What if the phone does not recognize the card?
- Try the card in another device to help determine whether the issue is with the card or phone.
- If you can access important files, back them up before formatting. Formatting erases card contents.
- If the card continues to show errors, it may be failing. Avoid formatting it until you have preserved important files if possible; Samsung does not guarantee that data can be recovered.
- If the card or tray is stuck, Samsung directs users to seek service rather than force it: Samsung’s SD-card troubleshooting page.
Does every Samsung phone support an SD card?
No. MicroSD support and the supported card capacity depend on the exact phone model and, in some cases, its regional variant. Check the specifications for your specific device before assuming it has a removable card slot. Samsung’s guide explains the model-dependent support and capacity limits: Samsung’s Galaxy SIM and microSD card guide.
