Neither command is a reliable first fix for every WMI error.
What the WMI repository does
The WMI repository is not a single file. Microsoft describes it as a collection of files in the Repository folder that work together as a database, storing WMI-related static data. Windows and applications use WMI infrastructure and providers to expose management information.
Because errors can originate in Windows components or providers—not just the repository—an error involving WMI does not by itself prove that the repository is corrupt. Microsoft warns against deleting the repository as a first action because doing so can damage Windows or installed applications. Microsoft’s winmgmt reference documents the available repository commands and this caution.
What each repository command does

These are built-in switches for the winmgmt WMI service utility. Microsoft documents the utility for Windows Vista and later client versions and Windows Server 2008 and later server versions; behavior and service dependencies can still vary by operating-system version and configuration.

What to expect when you run a rebuild
With salvage
Salvage is the less destructive of the two repair operations described here: it checks the active repository and rebuilds it only if it finds an inconsistency. It merges readable content from the inconsistent repository into the rebuilt one. The phrase “if it can be read” matters: salvage is not a guarantee that every item will survive.
With reset
Reset is a stronger change. It returns the repository to the state it had when Windows was first installed, then restores the MOF files marked with #pragma autorecover. Do not treat it as a cleanup that preserves all current provider registrations or custom repository contents.

With either operation
The operation concerns WMI repository data; it does not establish that the underlying cause of a WMI error has been fixed. If the problem comes from another Windows component or a provider, rebuilding the repository may not resolve it.
Why stopping WMI may affect other services
Depending on Windows version and configuration, stopping the WMI service can also stop services that depend on it. Microsoft gives SMS Agent Host and Windows Firewall as examples. Those dependent services do not automatically restart when WMI starts again, so check service status and restore any affected services as needed. Should you reset the WMI repository?
Do not reset it just because an application displays a WMI-related error. Start by establishing whether the repository is actually inconsistent and whether the issue points to WMI rather than a provider or another Windows component. Microsoft’s guidance is not to delete the repository as a first action; reset also changes it to the initial installation state rather than preserving all current contents.
For a WMI performance problem specifically, Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance says not to reset the repository without prior guidance from Microsoft support professionals. That caution applies to performance troubleshooting; it should not be broadened into a claim about every WMI problem.

How DISM and SFC fit in
DISM and System File Checker (SFC) are Windows image and system-file repair tools. They may be relevant to broader operating-system troubleshooting, but they are not WMI repository rebuild commands and do not mean the repository has been salvaged or reset. Microsoft’s Windows repair guidance describes these tools in their system-repair context.
