Windows 11 may install and run on a PC that fails one or more minimum requirements, but that does not make the installation supported. Microsoft warns that the device may have compatibility problems, will not receive Microsoft support for the unsupported installation, and is not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. A warning watermark may also appear on the desktop.
What “unsupported hardware” means
A PC is unsupported for Windows 11 if it fails at least one of Microsoft’s minimum system requirements. That does not necessarily mean Windows 11 cannot boot or run on it. The reason for a particular PC’s failure depends on its hardware and check results, so do not assume a processor or TPM issue without checking the device.
Use Microsoft’s Windows 11 requirements and check the specific device with PC Health Check or Windows Update. Microsoft describes installation on a device that does not meet minimum requirements as not recommended. Its unsupported-device guidance was updated December 12, 2024.
What to expect after installing it
Possible compatibility problems
Microsoft warns that an unsupported PC may malfunction because of compatibility or other issues. That warning does not mean every such computer will fail immediately, and Microsoft does not provide a failure-rate estimate.

No Microsoft support for the unsupported installation
Microsoft says it does not provide support for Windows 11 installations on devices that do not meet the minimum requirements. If a problem arises, you should not expect the same support coverage as on a qualifying PC.
Updates are not guaranteed
Microsoft says unsupported devices are not guaranteed to receive updates, including security updates. This is not a claim that every unsupported PC immediately stops receiving updates; it means you cannot rely on receiving them.

Warnings may appear
Microsoft documents a system-requirements watermark on the desktop and says a notification may also appear in Settings. These are warnings about the device’s status, not proof that Windows has stopped working.
Back up before installing
If you use installation media to perform a clean install, Microsoft’s instructions warn that the existing Windows installation, files, and installed applications will be lost. Back up files you need first, for example to OneDrive or an external backup device. A USB installation drive is a way to provide installation media; it does not make an ineligible PC supported.

Microsoft describes installation media as an alternative installation method, but the supported route begins with checking whether the PC meets the requirements. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 installation options before proceeding.
What you can do if Windows 11 causes problems
Microsoft’s guidance for an unsupported installation is to roll back to Windows 10 if the device experiences problems. Where the option is available, open Settings > System > Recovery and select Go back. Microsoft does not promise that this option will remain available indefinitely or appear on every installation.

Microsoft’s Windows 10 support page explains that ordinary support ended on October 14, 2025, and describes the consumer ESU option for eligible devices. Check its Windows 10 support and ESU details for current conditions before deciding.
