Deactivating X hides your account from the platform, but it does not immediately erase everything. X gives you 30 days to sign back in and reactivate; if you do not access the account within that window, X says it is deleted. During the window, your posts, replies, and direct messages are not the same as permanently erased records, and followers may take time to return after reactivation.
The practical distinction is temporary deactivation versus permanent deletion after the deadline. If you might want your account or its records later, request an archive before deactivating and keep track of the 30-day cutoff.
What happens to my posts when I deactivate X?
Your profile and posts are unavailable on X during deactivation, but X does not describe deactivation as instant, permanent erasure. If you reactivate within 30 days, X says posts can take time to reappear. If you do not access the account during that period, X says the account is deleted. X’s deactivation guidance explains the window and reactivation process.

Deactivation changes what is available through your X account; it does not guarantee that every copy of a post disappears from elsewhere. X does not promise that outside copies or cached search listings are removed on a particular schedule. A search result may remain even when the X page it points to is unavailable.

What about replies?
Replies are posts you authored in response to someone else’s post, so they are part of the account’s content affected by deactivation and may return after timely reactivation. X does not specify exactly how every old reply will appear inside another person’s thread during deactivation, or how quickly a thread’s displayed reply count may change. It is safer not to assume that every trace of a reply vanishes instantly from every conversation.
Mentions are different from your own posts and replies. An indexed version of X’s guidance has said that other people’s posts mentioning your username remain, but the username no longer links to the unavailable profile. That wording is not present in the currently rendered deactivation guidance, so treat it as a qualified description rather than a guarantee about how every mention will display.
Can people still see my DMs?
X explicitly says, “During the 30-day deactivation period, your direct messages won’t be deleted.” It also says that DMs you sent are deleted after that period when the account is deleted. That policy does not establish exactly what a recipient sees in their inbox at each point in the process.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsIn particular, do not treat deactivation as an immediate unsend function. It does not establish that a message disappears from a recipient’s view as soon as you deactivate, nor does it promise how messages are displayed after permanent deletion. If a message is sensitive or was sent to the wrong person, deactivating your account is not a reliable way to retract it.

Will I lose my followers and following?
Not necessarily. X says followers can return when you reactivate, but counts for followers, following, or posts may initially look wrong. X’s reactivation troubleshooting guidance says those counts should fully restore within 24 hours and advises contacting support if they are still incorrect after 48 hours. These are X’s support time frames, not independently measured guarantees.
If you sign back in and a count is temporarily inaccurate, allow time for restoration before concluding that the account has permanently lost its connections. If the problem remains after the 48-hour interval X gives, use the reactivation troubleshooting guidance to contact support.
How long do I have to reactivate my X account?
You have 30 days from deactivation to sign in and confirm reactivation. X says reactivation is unavailable after more than 30 days; once the account is deleted, you cannot use the ordinary reactivation process to bring it back. The current X reactivation instructions direct you to log in on x.com or in the X app and confirm the prompt.

What should I save before deactivating?
Request your X archive while you can still sign in. X describes the archive as HTML and JSON files that can include posts, direct messages, media, followers, and accounts you follow. It is a copy for reference, not a recovery mechanism that extends the 30-day reactivation window.
- Request the archive: While signed in, open Settings and privacy → Your account → Download an archive of your data and follow the prompts.
- Wait for the archive and save it somewhere you control: Keep a separate copy if the records matter to you. A USB flash drive is one optional way to store a downloaded copy; X does not require a particular storage device.
- Check that you have what you need before deactivating: The archive is intended to preserve a copy of account information, but it does not keep the account active or let you reactivate it after the deadline.
For details about what X says the archive may contain and how to request it, see Accessing your X data.
How do I deactivate X?
Use X’s account settings rather than simply assuming that removing the app deactivates the account. The in-app route in X’s guidance is Settings and privacy → Your account → Deactivate your account. You will be asked for your password and to confirm.
- Sign in to the account you intend to deactivate.
- Open Settings and privacy → Your account → Deactivate your account.
- Review the deactivation information, enter your password when prompted, and confirm.
- If you change your mind, sign in to x.com or the X app and confirm reactivation within 30 days.
Deactivation is a poor troubleshooting shortcut if the real issue is a missing post, a suspicious DM, an incorrect follower count, or a compromised account. X says deactivating and reactivating will not resolve those underlying problems; address the specific account or security issue instead.

What happens to subscriptions and information after deactivation?
Subscription handling depends on where the subscription was purchased. X says subscriptions purchased through an in-app purchase remain active unless managed separately, while subscriptions purchased on x.com cancel after deactivation. Check the purchase route and manage an in-app subscription through the relevant billing settings rather than assuming that deactivating the X account stops its charges.
After permanent deactivation, X’s narrower statement is that account information is no longer available in its Production Tools. That is not the same as a promise that every item of information is expunged everywhere, including recipients’ records, outside copies, or search listings. X’s guidance does not establish that broader outcome.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should I deactivate or leave the account active?
Deactivation suits someone who wants the account unavailable on X for a limited period and accepts the 30-day decision window. Leaving it active avoids that deadline, but does not make the profile unavailable. There is no separate indefinite pause mode established by X’s guidance.
| Choice | On-platform visibility | Can you sign back in? | Account outcome | Records and charges |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Deactivate | Profile and username are not viewable on X during deactivation, according to X guidance. | Yes, within 30 days, by signing in and confirming reactivation. | X says the account is deleted if it is not accessed within the 30-day window. | Request an archive before deactivation if you want a copy. Subscription treatment depends on purchase route. |
| Leave active | The account remains active on X. | Yes; there is no deactivation deadline to reactivate. | The account is not deleted through the deactivation process. | Download an archive if you need a separate personal copy; subscription arrangements are not changed by deactivation. |
The right choice depends on whether temporary unavailability is worth a deadline and whether you have saved the records you need. If you are uncertain about losing access, requesting an archive first gives you a separate reference copy, but only reactivating within the 30-day period preserves the account itself.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does deactivating X remove my account from X’s internal systems immediately?
X says that after permanent deactivation, account information is no longer available in its Production Tools. That statement is narrower than a guarantee that every copy or record is erased from every system or from other people’s possession.
Does deactivating X automatically cancel every subscription?
No. X distinguishes subscriptions bought through in-app purchases, which remain active unless managed separately, from subscriptions bought on x.com, which cancel after deactivation. Check the billing route you used before deactivating.
Will an X archive let me restore my account after the deadline?
No. The archive is a downloadable copy of account data for reference; it does not preserve your login or extend the period in which X allows reactivation.
