When a Chromebook reaches its model-specific final automatic update date, it stops receiving ChromeOS and browser updates—including security updates, bug fixes, and new features. It does not automatically stop working: you can keep using a device that works, but some apps that require newer software may eventually stop supporting it. Check the exact model’s update schedule before deciding what to do.
What changes after the final update?
Google says automatic updates include the operating system, browser, and hardware. Once a Chromebook receives its final automatic update, it no longer gets Google’s later software or security updates. Apps that require a particular ChromeOS or browser version may also stop being supported.
That does not mean every website or app will stop working at once. Google does not give a universal list of affected third-party services or a fixed grace period, so compatibility can vary. The device can remain usable, but it will be running software that no longer receives those updates.
Verified boot remains available after automatic updates stop: the Chromebook checks itself at startup and can repair itself if it detects tampering or corruption. This is not a substitute for security patches; it does not mean the device continues receiving them. (Google’s Auto Update policy)

How to check your Chromebook’s update date
- Open Settings.
- Select About ChromeOS, then Additional details.
- Find Update schedule and note the date shown for your device. Google’s update schedule guidance explains how to check it.
Update dates are device-specific. Google says ChromeOS devices receive 10 years of updates, measured from the platform’s first release, but some older models require an opt-in to receive the full period. Use the published schedule for the exact model rather than assuming that every Chromebook has the same end date.
Should you opt in to extended updates?
Some older Chromebooks have an extended-updates option. Google says models released in 2021 or later receive extended updates automatically; a subset of older devices must opt in. Eligibility and instructions depend on the device and whether it is personally owned or managed. Check Google’s extended updates support guidance and approved-device information before making a decision.

For eligible older devices, opting in has a significant trade-off: Google says it removes Android apps and the Google Play Store from that Chromebook and erases on-device Android app data. The choice cannot be reversed under Google’s Chromebook Help guidance. Other ChromeOS and Android devices are unaffected, and Play subscriptions can still be managed on the web.
| Choice for an eligible older device | Updates | Android apps and data |
|---|---|---|
| Opt in to extended updates | Receives updates through the applicable listed period. | Android apps and Play Store are removed; on-device Android app data is erased. |
| Do not opt in | Automatic updates do not continue past the prior date. | Apps and Play Store remain installed, though developers may stop supporting them over time. |
Weigh the continued ChromeOS security, performance, and stability updates against keeping Android apps and their local data on this Chromebook. If the device is managed by a school or employer, ask its administrator before changing update settings.

What can you do with an expired Chromebook?
Keep using it
Google says you can continue using a Chromebook that is working well, while recognizing that it will receive no more software updates. Google’s example warning reads: “This device will no longer receive software updates. You can continue using your computer but should consider upgrading.” There is no universal point at which an expired Chromebook becomes unusable.
Replace it
Google lists upgrading to a new Chromebook as an option. Before buying, check the new model’s own update-through date in Google’s update schedule; support dates vary by device.
