Depending on your settings, you may need to hold the on-screen circle for three seconds, or the phone may start the emergency call after a five-second countdown. Emergency services, your personal contacts and emergency responders’ location systems are separate recipients: what each receives depends on your setup, permissions, connectivity and local availability.
What happens when you press the power button five times?
On Android 12 and later, the Emergency SOS sequence begins after five or more presses of the power button. Google’s Android Help instructions say that setup can require you to hold inside an on-screen circle for three seconds or start the configured actions automatically after a five-second countdown.
- SOS starts: The phone displays the configured emergency actions and follows your confirmation setting: touch-and-hold or automatic countdown.
- The phone places an emergency call: It uses the emergency number configured in SOS setup. Check that this is the correct local number for your location; emergency numbers are not universal.
- Other enabled actions may begin: Emergency Sharing and emergency video recording can start while the call is placed if you enabled them. The exact actions depend on the device and setup.
Who receives a call, location or video?
The call, contact sharing, responder location and video sharing are distinct actions. Starting SOS does not mean that every kind of information automatically goes to every recipient.

How responder location differs from contact location sharing
ELS and Emergency Sharing have different recipients and do not rely on the same sharing route. ELS may make location available directly to authorized emergency response services during an emergency call or text; Google says this process does not send identifying location information to Google. Google’s Emergency Location Service information says ELS may use Google Location Services and other phone information to estimate location. Availability depends on the region and mobile network, and ELS can be turned off.

Emergency Sharing is for contacts you choose. Its real-time location feature requires an internet connection, Location Services and location permission for the Safety app. If ELS is off, the carrier might still provide device location to responders during an emergency call or text; that is separate from sharing your location with personal contacts.
What emergency video recording shares
If enabled, emergency recording can continue while you use other phone features. Google lists a maximum saved-video length of up to 45 minutes and storage use of about 10 MB per minute. These are Google’s product specifications, not measures of emergency response effectiveness.

- If automatic sharing is on, you have 15 seconds after recording to cancel it. Sharing can be delayed while the video uploads, and requires internet access.
- Once backed up, the video link is shared with configured emergency contacts; Google says the link expires after seven days. A person with the link can download a copy.
- If another app uses the camera, emergency recording pauses.
What to check before relying on SOS
Open the Safety app and review Emergency SOS setup on your phone. Labels and availability can vary by device, region and carrier, so confirm the actual options on the handset you use.
- Verify the local emergency number configured for SOS.
- Add the emergency contacts you want, and choose what information to share.
- Check Location Services and location permission for the Safety app if you want contact location sharing.
- Choose whether SOS requires a touch-and-hold confirmation or starts actions after the countdown.
- Decide whether to enable emergency video recording and automatic sharing.
Google states: “Emergency SOS doesn’t work in airplane mode or when Battery Saver is on.” Emergency Sharing with contacts also needs Wi-Fi or mobile internet for real-time location sharing. Google says emergency sharing ends automatically after 24 hours.

Why the result can differ between phones
Emergency SOS is documented for Android 12 and later, but feature availability and behavior can vary by device, user, country or region and carrier. Connectivity and permissions also matter: a call, contact location update, ELS location delivery and video upload each have distinct requirements. Google’s Emergency SOS setup guide describes the settings available, while its ELS guide explains responder location sharing.
