The disc still works, but you must keep possession of that qualifying disc to retain the digital license.
What the conversion does—and does not do
Xbox describes this as claiming a digital entitlement, not turning every physical game into a permanent digital copy. In its August 26, 2026 announcement, Xbox said the feature covers most Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc-based games, with thousands of titles at launch and more expected over time. That is not a precise count, and eligibility is not universal. Read Xbox’s announcement.
The physical disc remains usable after the entitlement is claimed. Xbox says it “continues to work exactly as it always has.” You are gaining possible digital access alongside the disc, not surrendering or modifying the disc.
How to claim the digital entitlement
- Use a supported Xbox One or Xbox Series X console.
- Insert the Xbox One or Xbox Series X game disc whose title is eligible.
- Launch the game. Xbox identifies launching the game from the inserted disc as the action that claims the entitlement.
Do not assume that every disc qualifies or that every console-and-disc combination is supported. Microsoft says eligibility can vary and may change; it may add or remove qualifying titles. The reviewed sources do not provide a complete, stable list of eligible games. Check the exact title rather than relying on the fact that it is an Xbox disc. Microsoft’s Digital Goods Usage Rules describe the eligibility condition.

Do you still need the disc to play?
Yes. Microsoft calls the digital access a limited license and says it remains conditioned on continued possession of the qualifying disc. It may revalidate eligibility, and access may be suspended or revoked if you no longer possess that disc. The digital license cannot be transferred separately from the disc. In practical terms, claiming digital access does not let you sell or give away the qualifying disc and keep the digital entitlement.
Can the digital version work on PC or through cloud gaming?
Xbox says the entitlement may provide digital benefits such as Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where supported. These benefits depend on the specific game; claiming an entitlement does not guarantee PC play or cloud streaming for every title.

Play Anywhere applies only to participating games, and Microsoft says a Play Anywhere game can be played on one device at a time. Check whether the exact title supports the feature before counting on cross-device access. Xbox Play Anywhere.

What to check before relying on the digital access
- Confirm that the exact disc-based game is eligible; Xbox says most, not all, Xbox One and Xbox Series X disc games are supported.
- Keep possession of the qualifying disc for as long as you want to retain its digital license.
- Check the game’s own support for Play Anywhere or Cloud Gaming if you need those benefits.
- Remember that Microsoft can change eligibility, so a past assumption about a title is not a guarantee of ongoing qualification.
