Stopping your World of Warcraft subscription does not delete your characters. Your Battle.net account remains, and the characters stay attached to it. The account changes to Free Trial status, which limits Modern WoW play to level 20 and applies starter-account restrictions until you add game time or restart a subscription.
Your character data is not the immediate concern. The practical risks are time-sensitive mail and Auction House listings: messages and auctions can expire and be purged. Cancel renewals, finish or cancel auctions, and empty your mailboxes before leaving. When you return, add game time or a subscription; Blizzard says activation can take up to 24 hours with some payment methods.
Your characters are not deleted when game time expires
An expired subscription is an access change, not a character-deletion action. Blizzard customer-support representative Vrakthris wrote in 2023 that, if a player stops paying or stops adding game time, “from 2004 to present, your account and characters would be basically unchanged” unless the game itself changed. That qualification matters because World of Warcraft has changed its systems and level ranges over the years, including the level squish introduced with Shadowlands.
In practical terms, a character you leave on the account remains there with its accumulated progression. Gold, equipment, mounts, achievements, professions and other stored progress are not removed simply because the subscription is inactive. They may appear in a different context when you return if Blizzard has changed levels, item systems, currencies or other game mechanics, but that is different from deleting the character.

The deletion process is separate. It starts only when you deliberately choose Delete in-game. Letting a subscription lapse does not put a character into the deletion queue.
What your account becomes after cancellation
Blizzard’s official Free Trial FAQ states: “Whenever your account doesn’t have an active subscription or non-recurring game time, its status will revert to that of a Free Trial account.” The account is therefore still usable, but it no longer has the access granted by active game time.
Modern WoW is capped at level 20
Free Trial access covers playable Modern WoW content through level 20. Blizzard says that adding game time or a subscription allows you to play past level 20 in Modern WoW. A character above level 20 is still on the account; you simply cannot continue playing it under the Free Trial rules until access is restored.

Free Trial restrictions can affect more than the level cap. Blizzard’s starter-account rules can limit trading, mail, Auction House access, guild functions, chat and other social or account features. The exact restriction set can change, so check Blizzard’s current Free Trial documentation when you come back rather than relying on an old list.

Classic access follows the active-game-time rule
Blizzard’s support guidance says that adding game time or a subscription allows unrestricted play in WoW Classic and Wrath Classic, as well as access beyond level 20 in Modern WoW. The important distinction is whether game time is active, not whether the character was created in a particular year.
What remains available, what is restricted and what can expire

The table’s last row is the source of much confusion. A character that is merely inactive is not treated like a character that you deleted yourself.
The real risk during a long break: mail and auctions
Blizzard support guidance recommends ending active auctions and clearing character mail before leaving. Auction listings and mailbox messages are temporary systems: when they expire, they can be purged. That warning does not mean the character or its permanent inventory is being erased. It means a time-limited transaction or message can disappear while you are away.
Before you cancel or let game time lapse
- Cancel the recurring subscription. Use the Battle.net account’s subscription management page and confirm that the renewal has been canceled. This prevents a future renewal charge; it does not delete the account.
- Finish or cancel active auctions. Collect proceeds and returned items while you can. Do not leave valuable listings depending on a return date you may miss.
- Empty every character’s mailbox. Collect attachments and important messages before they expire. Check characters you rarely play, not only your main.
- Move anything you need into permanent storage. If an item is sitting in mail or attached to an expiring transaction, place it in the character’s inventory or bank where the current game rules allow.
- Secure the Battle.net account. Blizzard’s hiatus guidance recommends account-security measures. Use a unique password, protect the account with available security features and review recovery information before taking a long break.
These steps are precautions for temporary systems and account access. They are not required to preserve the character itself.

Inactive characters versus deleted characters
Do not use the character-restoration table as evidence that Blizzard will delete an inactive character. Blizzard’s deletion article applies after you select Delete in-game. Its current restoration windows are:

After the applicable period, Blizzard says a deleted character is purged from the database and no longer appears on the restoration list. Those deadlines concern an active deletion decision. They do not run merely because a subscription expired.
How to return after months or years away
Returning is normally a billing and access step, not a character-recovery process. You do not need to recreate an account or character that was left intact.

- Sign in to the correct Battle.net account. If you have more than one account or region, verify that you are using the account where the characters were originally created.
- Choose an access option. Blizzard says you must add game time or a subscription to play World of Warcraft. A recurring subscription renews automatically until canceled; non-recurring game time does not create a recurring renewal.
- Complete the order. Blizzard advises that the order must be complete before the account becomes active. Payment processing can take up to 24 hours depending on the payment method.
- Launch the correct game version and region. After activation, select the Modern WoW or Classic environment in which the character exists. A character may not appear if you are looking at a different region, realm or game version.
- Check the mailbox and auctions first. If you left mail or listings before the break, understand that any item past its expiration may already have been purged even though the character is present.
If a returning player cannot find a character
Start by separating an access problem from a deletion problem. An account that is still on Free Trial may show characters but prevent play beyond the level-20 boundary. That is an access restriction, not evidence of deletion.

Check the account, region and realm
Confirm the Battle.net login, game account, region and realm. Long absences make it easy to remember the character name but sign in to a different Battle.net account or select a different realm. Also account for game-version changes: the character may belong to Modern WoW or a Classic service that is not currently selected.
Check whether the character was actually deleted
If you deliberately deleted it, use Blizzard’s character-restoration feature while the relevant level-based window is still open. A level 10–49 deletion has a 90-day window, level 50–59 has 120 days and level 60 or higher has 365 days. If the window has passed and Blizzard says the character has been purged, it will not appear in the restoration list.
Resolve delayed activation
If payment succeeded but the account still behaves like Free Trial, wait for order processing, which Blizzard says can take up to 24 hours depending on payment method. Keep the payment confirmation and avoid buying game time repeatedly while the first order is still pending. If access remains restricted after processing, contact Blizzard Support with the transaction details.
Choosing how to reactivate

Neither reactivation option restores mail or auctions that already expired. It restores account access to characters and systems that still exist.

What can change while you are away
The characters remain attached to the account, but World of Warcraft is an evolving service. A returning player may encounter a different maximum level, changed class or profession systems, altered items, new or removed content, and reorganized currencies. Blizzard’s support statement explicitly qualifies “basically unchanged” by noting that the game itself may change, such as through a level squish.
That is why a character can be present but not look exactly as remembered. The distinction is important: an account-level game update changes how old progress is represented; it does not mean the subscription lapse deleted the character.
Bottom line for a long-term break
Canceling or allowing a World of Warcraft subscription to expire leaves your characters on the account. The account reverts to Free Trial status, Modern WoW access stops at level 20, and starter-account restrictions apply until you add game time or restart the subscription. Protect mail and auctions before leaving, because those temporary systems can expire and be purged. Only a deliberate character deletion invokes Blizzard’s 90-, 120- or 365-day restoration windows.
