Short answer: a Ubisoft server shutdown does not automatically erase every game you bought. The result depends on the specific title, platform and online function being retired. An offline-capable game may keep its campaign and local features while losing multiplayer, matchmaking, news, statistics, stores, cloud functions or account-linked progression. An always-online or service-only game can become inaccessible when its servers stop accepting connections.
Ubisoft’s legacy shutdown notices generally say that offline features remain available, but that statement is not a guarantee for every release. Check the title-specific notice for your platform, prepare any required downloadable content (DLC) before the deadline, and determine whether your saves and progression are local or server-dependent.
What a Ubisoft server shutdown actually changes
A server shutdown removes one or more network services that a game uses. Ubisoft may retire multiplayer servers, matchmaking, leaderboards, in-game news, statistics, account linking, cloud saves, cross-progression, an in-game store or the authentication service that starts the game. These are separate functions, so losing one does not necessarily remove the others.
For many older Ubisoft releases, the company’s support lists for games in the A–M and N–Z ranges state that online multiplayer, in-game news and player statistics are shut down while offline features remain available. That wording means a single-player campaign can continue even though online modes and connected extras disappear. It does not promise that every DLC item, save type or launcher workflow will continue unchanged.

Ubisoft has explained that retiring old services can be necessary when the technology supporting them becomes obsolete. In an October 27, 2023 Ubisoft News notice, the company described decommissioning legacy services as a necessity rather than a decision it takes lightly. The practical effect is therefore title-specific: the notice for your game is more important than a general assumption about Ubisoft’s catalog.
Offline-capable games
An offline-capable game stores enough of its campaign, rules and assets on your device to run without a live Ubisoft connection. After a shutdown, you may still be able to launch a downloaded copy, load local saves and complete single-player content. Multiplayer, matchmaking, online events, news feeds and statistics can stop working.
Always-online and service-only games
An always-online game checks a remote service during launch or play and cannot provide its core experience without that service. A service-only game is built around a hosted world, competitive session or live economy rather than a self-contained campaign. When the required servers close, these games can become unplayable even if the software remains installed.
Will you still be able to play offline?

- Identify the exact edition and platform. A PC copy, PlayStation version, Xbox version and Nintendo version can have different activation and download rules.
- Read Ubisoft’s notice for the title. Look for separate statements about campaign access, multiplayer, statistics, stores, cloud saves, account linking and DLC.
- Check whether the game is always online. If launch or core gameplay requires a server, offline play will not survive unless Ubisoft releases an offline patch or replacement backend.
- Test an offline launch before the deadline. Sign out or disconnect the device only after the game and DLC are installed and activated, then start the game through the platform’s supported launcher.
- Back up local saves. A local save can remain usable; a cloud-only or account-linked progression record may not.
Ubisoft’s PC guidance says offline play can work through Epic Games Launcher, Steam, Steam Deck, Ubisoft Connect PC and the Xbox PC app. In offline mode, however, cross-progression, online services and in-game stores are unavailable. A launcher may still need to validate ownership or finish a first run while you are connected, so test the complete process rather than relying on an installed shortcut.
Which features are likely to disappear?

These outcomes are not interchangeable. A title can retain its campaign while losing cloud synchronization, or retain local saves while requiring an online check for DLC. Treat each function as a separate dependency.
What happens to DLC?
DLC is the most common source of a different PC-versus-console result. Some add-ons need a one-time online activation or entitlement check before Ubisoft retires the relevant service. If that activation never occurs, the files may be present but the game can refuse to unlock them later.

In an August 31, 2022 update, Ubisoft told PC owners of Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed III (2012), Far Cry 3 and Splinter Cell Blacklist to activate their single-player DLC before October 1. Ubisoft said the same DLC on consoles would remain downloadable and playable. That is a title-and-platform policy, not a universal rule for all Ubisoft DLC.

Before a published deadline
- Connect the platform to the internet and install every owned add-on.
- Launch the base game while signed into the Ubisoft account that owns the entitlement.
- Open the DLC from inside the game and complete any prompt to download, activate or claim it.
- Quit normally, make a local save after entering the DLC, and retain the installed files.
- Repeat the process on each platform or account where the content is licensed; activation may not transfer between accounts.
Do not assume that a DLC purchase made before a shutdown will remain downloadable forever. The key questions are whether the content has already been downloaded, whether it requires a future entitlement check and what Ubisoft’s notice says for your platform.
Platform differences: PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo
PC
PC games often involve two layers: the store launcher (such as Steam or Epic Games Launcher) and Ubisoft Connect PC. Ubisoft’s offline guidance covers Epic Games Launcher, Steam, Steam Deck, Ubisoft Connect PC and the Xbox PC app, but warns that cross-progression, online services and in-game stores are unavailable offline. Complete first-time installation, account linking and DLC activation while connected, then verify that the game starts in the launcher’s offline mode.
PlayStation and Xbox
Console games can continue to use local saves and installed campaign files, but the platform’s entitlement system and Ubisoft’s own service can impose separate checks. A shutdown notice may preserve console DLC even when PC DLC requires advance activation, as happened in Ubisoft’s 2022 notice. Download and launch the game before the deadline, and keep the console set to the account that owns the content.

Nintendo versions can have different online infrastructure and release-specific functionality. Check the notice for the exact Nintendo edition rather than applying a PC or console rule from another game. Preserve local saves and installed software, and verify whether any add-on is delivered through a separate download process.

Where are your saves and progression stored?
A local save is data on the PC, console or handheld. It can remain usable after servers close if the game’s launch and save systems work offline. A cloud save exists on a remote service and may stop syncing or become unavailable. Cross-progression combines account identity with remote synchronization, so it is specifically affected by offline mode and service retirement.
Before the shutdown, make a manual backup using the platform’s supported save-management tools. On PC, copy the game’s save folder only after closing the game and launcher; keep more than one backup in a separate location. On consoles, use the system’s export or backup feature where available. Do not edit save files or move them between platforms unless the game explicitly supports it.

The XDefiant case demonstrates why an installed game can still become inaccessible: its central experience depends on Ubisoft’s servers. The Anno 2070 and The Crew 2 examples show that Ubisoft can replace infrastructure or add offline support, but those measures must be announced for the particular title.
Do you lose the game you bought?
In practical terms, you may lose access to some or all functionality, but a shutdown does not automatically delete the files on your device. Ubisoft’s Terms of Use 5.0, updated January 26, 2026, state that “The Services and Content are LICENSED TO YOU, NOT SOLD.” That is Ubisoft’s contractual position, not a universal statement of consumer law. Whether you have refund, replacement or other remedies depends on the country, retailer, platform rules and the facts of the purchase.

For an offline-capable title, the usual outcome is continued access to installed single-player content with network features removed. For an always-online title, the practical outcome can be loss of playability because the licensed software no longer has the service it requires. Keep purchase receipts, account details and shutdown notices if you need to ask the retailer or platform holder about a remedy.
What to do before Ubisoft’s deadline
- Record the exact game name, edition, platform, region and Ubisoft account.
- Read the title-specific shutdown notice and list every affected feature.
- Install the base game, patches and all owned DLC while the service is live.
- Open each DLC chapter or item once to complete any required activation.
- Launch the game through the supported launcher and test its offline mode.
- Create and verify local saves; export or copy backups using the platform’s supported method.
- Capture screenshots or save copies of important settings, unlocks and account information.
- Do not uninstall a working offline installation after the shutdown unless you have confirmed that the platform can reinstall it without the retired service.
How to troubleshoot after the servers close
The game launches but DLC is locked
Confirm that the DLC was activated before Ubisoft’s stated deadline and that you are using the owning account. If the notice required advance activation and it was missed, reinstalling may not fix the missing entitlement.
The campaign starts but progress is missing
Check for a local save on the original device and profile. Cloud saves and cross-progression may no longer synchronize. Avoid overwriting the remaining local save while testing other profiles.

Connect once, allow updates and account linking to complete, then use the launcher’s documented offline mode. If the title requires a live authentication service, an offline setting cannot bypass that design.
Multiplayer no longer connects
Verify the announced shutdown date and affected service. If Ubisoft retired matchmaking or the game’s servers, router changes and port forwarding cannot restore the official service; only a replacement backend or an officially supported community solution could change that outcome.
How to check any future Ubisoft shutdown notice
Ask six questions of the announcement: Is the game playable without Ubisoft servers? Which online functions are being removed? Does DLC require one-time activation or a pre-shutdown download? Do PC and console versions differ? Are saves local, cloud-based or account-linked? Has Ubisoft announced an offline patch, remaster or replacement backend?
Answering those questions for the exact edition gives you a reliable expectation. A broad statement such as “Ubisoft games will stop working” is no more accurate than “all Ubisoft games will remain playable.” The outcome follows the game’s architecture, the retired service and the platform policy described in its notice.
