Your best protection is to export your links while the account is still accessible and keep a copy somewhere outside the service. That export is usually a list of bookmarks, not a copy of every page they point to.
What happens to your saved links when the service closes?
There is no single shutdown process for every bookmarking app. The operator sets the dates and terms, so the app may stop working before export access ends, or account data may be deleted after a separate deadline. Once the service and its export tools are no longer available, you may not be able to retrieve links that you never saved elsewhere.
Pocket illustrates why dates matter. Mozilla announced that Pocket would shut down on July 8, 2025, and that users could export saves until October 8, 2025; after that, data would be permanently deleted. Pocket API read and write access also ended on October 8. Those deadlines have passed. Mozilla said the phase-out covered Pocket Web, its Android, iOS, and macOS apps, and browser extensions. Mozilla’s Pocket shutdown notice and Pocket information page describe that specific closure; other services may set different terms and dates.
Can you get your bookmarks back after an app closes?
You can restore or move bookmarks if you have a usable export saved outside the service. If you did not export before access ended, recovery depends on whether the provider still offers a recovery route; do not assume that it will. Check the shutdown notice for separate dates for app access, exports, APIs, and data deletion.

An export typically preserves URLs and may preserve some associated information, depending on the app and format. It does not necessarily preserve saved-page text, highlights, notes, tags, or attachments. For example, Mozilla documents Firefox’s HTML export as a way to transfer bookmarks to another browser or device, while its JSON/JSONLZ4 backup is for restoring bookmarks in Firefox. Mozilla’s Firefox bookmarks instructions explain the distinction.
How to export and protect your links
- Find the export or backup control. While you can still sign in, open the app’s settings or help pages and look for “Export,” “Backup,” or “Download data.” If closure has been announced, record the exact last date for export; it may differ from the date the app closes.
- Choose a format suited to your next step. HTML is commonly intended for importing bookmarks into a browser. CSV can be easier to inspect or process in a spreadsheet. Neither format guarantees a perfect transfer of every type of app data.
- Save the export outside the app. Store a local copy, and consider a second copy on separate storage, such as a USB flash drive. The exported file—not the storage device—is the essential part.
- Check that the file works. Open it or inspect its contents. If you are moving to another service, test-import a small set first and check whether URLs and any metadata you rely on came across.
- Keep a separate archive if you need the pages themselves. A bookmark export is not a promise that the linked pages will remain online or that their full text has been saved. If a destination page is removed or moved, its URL may no longer work.

How to choose a replacement bookmark manager
Compare services by how easily you can take your data with you, and by what “backup” actually covers. Current features can make a service more convenient, but cannot guarantee that it will operate indefinitely.

- Portability: Which formats can you export, and can another browser or service import them?
- Data coverage: Do exports include tags, notes, highlights, saved-page copies, and uploaded attachments—or only some of them?
- Storage model: Does the app keep only links, or does it also preserve page content?
- Backup details: How often are backups made, where are they stored, and can you download a copy outside your account?
- Plan conditions: Are backup or preservation features tied to a paid tier, and what happens to them if your plan changes?
