You might lose access to the whole game, keep some offline modes, or retain certain items while online features disappear. Refunds are not automatic: start with the game’s shutdown notice, then check the policy of the store that took your payment.
What a shutdown can—and cannot—tell you about your purchase
Buying a game does not guarantee that a network-dependent title will remain playable indefinitely. Some games rely on servers even for basic access; others can still run in offline modes after their online services end. A shutdown may also affect multiplayer, social features, community content, downloadable content (DLC), virtual currency, or items in different ways.

Keep two questions separate: whether your account still shows a transaction, and whether the game or purchased content can still be accessed or used. A transaction record does not by itself keep a game’s servers running, and a shutdown announcement does not establish that every purchase type has the same outcome.
There is no single industry-wide shutdown or refund rule. The specific title notice, the type and date of each purchase, the store that processed it, and your location all matter.

What three shutdowns show
These examples illustrate why it is important to read the notice for the exact game rather than assume that every shutdown means the same thing.
| Game and notice | What happened to access and features | Purchases and refunds |
|---|---|---|
| The Crew Ubisoft announcement, December 14, 2023 |
Ubisoft said the game would remain playable until March 31, 2024. After the servers shut down, it said the game would no longer be accessible on any listed platform: PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Amazon Luna, and Ubisoft+. | The game and virtual-currency packs were to be delisted. Ubisoft directed recent purchasers to the refund policy of the store where they bought the game; it did not announce an automatic refund for all owners. |
| Concord PlayStation announcement, September 3, 2024 |
PlayStation said the game would go offline beginning September 6, 2024, and sales would cease. Players whose purchases were refunded would lose access. | PlayStation announced full refunds for PS5 and PC purchasers through the applicable digital storefronts. Physical-copy customers were directed to their retailer. This was a title-specific arrangement, not a general rule for other games. |
| WWE 2K24 WWE 2K Support notice, December 8, 2025 |
The notice said servers would be discontinued on March 31, 2026, ending online matches and Community Creations. It said Play Now, Showcase, MyRISE, MyGM, and Universe would remain playable offline. The announced server-closure date has passed. | The notice said the game, virtual currency, and add-ons would stop being available for purchase on January 31, 2026. It did not announce a general refund offer. |
The Crew is an example of full access loss; WWE 2K24 is an example of named offline modes remaining after online features ended. Concord demonstrates a publisher offering refunds for a particular shutdown. None of those outcomes should be assumed for another title.
What can happen to DLC, currency, and items
Base-game access is only part of the question. DLC, season passes, virtual currency, and consumable items may be governed by different terms or behave differently when a service is discontinued.

Electronic Arts’ general service-update guidance says that currency or item inventories may remain usable depending on the game and which services are ending. That is EA’s guidance about its own games, not a promise that other publishers will preserve inventories. EA also says its policy refund route excludes separately purchased DLC and in-game currencies; other storefront rules and applicable legal rights may differ.

Before a shutdown, check whether the announcement names particular content, says purchases will stop before servers close, or explains what remains usable afterward. Delisting means a game or add-on is no longer available for new purchases through the named channel; it does not, by itself, answer whether existing owners can still use it.
How to check whether you can get a refund
- Read the game’s shutdown notice. Look for the shutdown date, affected platforms and features, delisting or sales dates, content that remains usable, and any refund offer. A special offer for one game does not establish eligibility for another.
- Identify the seller for each transaction. Check the receipt and account transaction history. The publisher may not be the seller that can process your refund. EA says purchases made through other stores must be taken to those retailers; physical purchases likewise depend on the retailer’s process.
- Separate purchase types. Check the base game, DLC or season pass, consumables or currency, and recurring subscription separately. One policy may treat these categories differently.
- Check the policy’s time and use conditions. Save the purchase date, request date, and details about whether you downloaded, streamed, or launched the content. Eligibility can depend on these facts.
- Check local consumer protections. Store refund policies are not a substitute for mandatory rights that may apply where you live. If a policy rejects your request, consult the relevant consumer authority or a qualified adviser in your jurisdiction.
For example, US PlayStation Store guidance generally requires a request for a game or DLC within 14 days of purchase and that the content has not been downloaded or streamed, unless it is faulty. Its consumables checklist requires a request within 14 days, purchase through PlayStation Store, and that the game has not been launched after the purchase. These are US storefront criteria, not a worldwide standard.

EA’s own policy also has eligibility windows tied to launch and purchase timing, including different criteria for a new release that cannot be played for technical reasons. Its policy does not provide refunds for separately purchased DLC or in-game currency through that policy route. Consult the current terms for the relevant account, region, and transaction rather than treating a publisher’s general guidance as a guarantee.
Why a game may be shut down
Keeping a live service operating requires ongoing infrastructure and support. EA says older games may be sunset when the remaining player base is too small to make continued operation feasible. Its service-updates page describes “typically fewer than 1% of all peak online players across all EA titles” as a threshold associated with support becoming infeasible. EA does not state a publication year for that figure, and it is EA’s own typical threshold—not an independently measured industry statistic.
Other constraints can also be title-specific. Ubisoft cited upcoming server-infrastructure and licensing constraints in its December 14, 2023 notice about The Crew. A publisher’s reason for closing one game does not establish why another game is ending or what remedies its players may have.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

What consumer law may mean for players
Consumer rights depend on jurisdiction, contract terms, the facts of the purchase, and the applicable law. The examples below are limited to the positions described by the named EU institutions; they do not resolve an individual player’s claim.
European Union: conformity remedies, not a general promise of perpetual play
In an April 5, 2024 answer concerning The Crew, the European Parliament said EU consumer rules prohibit unfair commercial practices and terms and provide remedies for lack of conformity, but do not set a specific duration for online video games. It described Directive (EU) 2019/770 as allowing remedies to bring digital content or a service into conformity and, where conformity will not be restored, a proportionate price reduction or termination. National law implements EU directives, and national courts and authorities handle individual disputes.
In a June 16, 2026 communication responding to the European Citizens’ Initiative on disabling videogames, the European Commission said it could not at that stage propose a general legal obligation to keep games playable after they stop being commercially provided, citing intellectual-property rights. The Commission also pointed to existing consumer-law safeguards, including information about contract duration and termination conditions and the possibility of proportionate refunds. That communication states the Commission’s policy position on that date; it is not a decision on any individual refund claim.

Elsewhere: do not treat a storefront policy as the whole answer
The cited US platform policies illustrate storefront procedures but do not settle every state or federal claim. The available examples do not establish one worldwide rule or the result of every dispute. If the amount matters or a refund is denied, check the consumer-protection rules that apply in your country or region.
What to save before contacting a store or publisher
- The shutdown announcement and the date it was published.
- Your receipt or transaction-history entry, including the seller, purchase date, platform, and item purchased.
- Whether the content was downloaded, streamed, launched, or used, if the store’s criteria make that relevant.
- The refund policy or support response for the seller that processed the transaction.
These details help you ask about the right purchase under the right policy. The publisher’s notice tells you what is changing in the game; the seller’s policy and applicable law determine what refund routes may be available.
