There is no industry-wide rule that automatically transfers a grocery rewards account when stores merge. The retailer may preserve your existing login and balance, move you into a new program, convert points into a different currency, or leave banners operating under separate loyalty rules. The merger notice and the loyalty program’s terms—not store ownership alone—determine what happens.
Before the change, document your account and read the retailer’s transition instructions. That is the safest way to protect points, fuel benefits, clipped coupons, personalized prices and subscriptions when the brands’ systems are connected or replaced.
Why a merger does not automatically merge your rewards account
A grocery company can own several banners while maintaining separate websites, apps, databases and loyalty terms. A legal acquisition therefore does not prove that an old rewards number will work at every newly related store. Integration can occur months after a transaction closes, and a proposed deal may never close at all.
Retailers generally make the account decision in a transition notice, frequently published as an FAQ, email or revised program terms. Look for four specific statements:
- Whether your existing rewards number, phone number or login remains valid.
- Whether points, rewards or fuel benefits carry over at the same value.
- Which banners, stores, apps and websites accept the account after the change.
- What deadline applies to unused rewards, coupons or other benefits.
If the notice does not answer one of those questions, treat the point as unresolved and ask customer support before assuming your balance is portable.
The four account outcomes you may encounter

A retailer can combine some data without combining every benefit. For example, a shared account may show one points balance while a coupon, fuel or subscription benefit remains limited to a particular banner.
How retailers match your old account to a new one
Rewards number, card and phone number
Kroger’s current Rewards Program Terms & Conditions say a rewards number can be delivered through a digital account or a physical card. Eligible purchases earn points when the rewards number or Alt ID is used. This means the identifier used at checkout is central to matching purchases to your profile.

The same terms say online orders are associated with the account used to place them. They also state that members are responsible for keeping account information current. An outdated email address or mobile number can therefore prevent you from receiving a migration notice or completing an identity check.
“It is your responsibility to keep your account information up to date to make sure that you are receiving all the benefits associated with your membership.”
Do not create a second account on your own
Opening a new profile with a different email or phone number can make automated matching harder. Unless the retailer expressly instructs you to register again, keep using the existing account and follow the official migration path. If registration is required, use the same identifying details and retain the old rewards number for support.

What can happen to points, fuel points and coupons
Points and rewards
A transition can preserve a balance at face value, convert it to a new unit, or impose a use-by date. “Carry over” does not necessarily mean “remain available forever”; the notice may place converted units on a new expiration cycle.
Fuel points
Fuel benefits may follow different rules from grocery points. Confirm whether the fuel balance transfers, whether its earning rate changes, which fuel stations accept it and whether a temporary grace period applies. If the notice discusses only grocery rewards, do not infer that fuel points are included.
Clipped coupons and personalized prices
Digital coupons are usually attached to a particular account and banner. A merger notice should say whether clipped offers, personalized prices, shopping lists and purchase history move to the new system. Save screenshots of high-value offers before the migration because a coupon may disappear even when the underlying points balance survives.
Paid or bundled subscriptions
If the account includes a delivery subscription, membership fee or other recurring benefit, check its separate terms. A loyalty migration may preserve the free rewards account while requiring a new agreement for a paid service.

A documented conversion example: Albertsons for U
Albertsons’ program materials show why the exact transition language matters. Albertsons for U is described as a free program covering participating banners that include Albertsons, Jewel-Osco, Acme, Carrs, Shaw’s, Star Market, Safeway, Andronico’s, Vons, Pavilions, Randalls, Tom Thumb, Kings and Balducci’s.

It also stated that converted and newly earned points expired at the end of May under the program’s stated two-calendar-month cycle. With the automatic-cash-off option enabled, every 100 points equaled $1 cash off.
Those figures describe that specific Albertsons transition and should not be applied to another retailer. A different merger could use a different ratio, a different expiration clock or no conversion at all.
Albertsons also explains that points earned at participating banner stores and through its apps or websites are combined when attached to the same account. However, its materials caution that grocery rewards may be limited to the banner that offers them. In practical terms, one account can aggregate activity while a reward remains redeemable only at the originating banner.
Why a proposed merger is not proof of future integration
In an October 14, 2022 customer FAQ about the proposed Kroger-Albertsons transaction, the companies described an expected broader, more personalized loyalty program and cited an expected customer base of approximately 85 million households. That was a transaction-era company projection, not a guarantee that existing accounts would be merged or that every banner would share benefits.
The Associated Press reported in February 2024 that the proposal faced Federal Trade Commission and state legal challenges. A proposed transaction can be delayed, changed, blocked or abandoned before any loyalty-system work is completed. Until the retailer publishes a final integration notice, continue using the account under its current terms and do not assume that a future combined program will launch.

Protect your account before the migration date
- Find the official notice. Read the retailer’s merger FAQ, email, in-app message and current loyalty terms. Use the notice from the banner where you shop, not a social-media summary.
- Verify your contact details. Sign in and confirm your email address and mobile number. Update them while you can still authenticate the old account.
- Record every balance. Save screenshots or downloaded statements showing grocery points, fuel points, unused rewards, clipped coupons, personalized offers and any subscription status. Include the date and your rewards number.
- Check expiration language. Identify rewards that expire before or shortly after the migration. Read whether redeeming them now affects a conversion or reduces a balance that would otherwise carry over.
- Do not duplicate the profile. Keep the existing account unless the retailer directs you to create a replacement. If it does, follow the stated process and retain your old identifier.
- Test the new system after the stated date. Sign in through the official app or website, check the displayed balances and perform a small account lookup or transaction before relying on the system for a large purchase.
- Escalate with evidence. If anything is missing, contact customer support with the old rewards number, account email or phone number, transaction dates, receipts and saved screenshots.
How to read a merger notice
Use this comparison when a retailer gives you several dates, options or new program names:

Should you spend your rewards before a merger?
There is no universal “spend everything” rule. Redeeming can be sensible when a reward is close to expiration and the notice does not promise an equal carryover. Waiting can be better when the retailer guarantees a favorable conversion or when redemption would forfeit a larger balance under a promotion.
Make the decision by comparing three facts in the notice:

- Value: Is the conversion value equal to, greater than or less than the current reward?
- Deadline: Does the old reward expire before the conversion, or does the new currency receive a fresh expiration period?
- Use: Can you redeem the new reward at the stores where you actually shop?
If any of those terms are missing, contact support and ask for the answer in writing. Do not rely on a cashier’s guess about a future system change.
What to do when a balance is missing after migration
First, rule out an account mismatch
Sign out and back in using the email, phone number or rewards number tied to the old account. Check whether the retailer created a second profile during registration. Compare the account identifier shown in the app with the number on your saved statement or physical card.
Check timing and conversion rules
Some systems update balances in stages. Review the stated migration date, conversion window and expiration schedule. A converted reward may appear as points, while an old reward label disappears by design.
Contact support with a complete record
Provide your old identifier, current identifier if different, contact details, transaction dates, receipts and screenshots. Explain whether the problem concerns grocery points, fuel points, a coupon, a personalized price or a subscription; those may be handled by separate teams. Ask for a case number and retain the response.

Ownership changes do not tell you what happens to loyalty data. The controlling documents are the final merger notice and the applicable program terms. Preserve proof of your balance, keep your contact information current, avoid unapproved duplicate accounts and verify each benefit—especially expiration dates and banner restrictions—before and after the transition.
