When a digital storefront shuts down, buying usually ends first; access to games you already own may continue, but it is not guaranteed forever. A platform can leave redownloads available while ending sales, later close download servers, or shut game servers independently. An installed game with a self-contained offline mode may keep working, while multiplayer, cloud saves, leaderboards, user-created content, live inventories and authentication-dependent features can stop immediately when their servers disappear.
The safest approach is to treat a digital purchase as access tied to an account, a platform license and still-running services. Install important games before announced deadlines, test them offline, retain account-recovery information and use legitimate physical editions when they genuinely contain the software you need.
Store closure, download closure and server closure are different events
“The store is closed” describes several technical changes that do not necessarily happen on the same day. Confusing them is the source of most bad advice about digital ownership.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNew sales and wallet functions stop
The first step is normally the end of new transactions. The platform may stop selling games and downloadable content, accepting redemption codes, or allowing users to add money to a store wallet. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops stopped sales of software and DLC at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time on March 27, 2023. A title that was never attached to your account before that deadline generally cannot be acquired afterward through the closed store.

Redownloads can continue after sales end
A platform may keep a purchase-history and download service running after it stops selling products. Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS remain redownloadable “for the foreseeable future,” and that software updates can still be received. That wording has no universal end date. It is an operating policy, not a worldwide promise of perpetual access.
Game servers can close separately
A game publisher or platform operator can retire online services while the storefront remains available, or keep the store open after a particular game’s servers are gone. Matchmaking, rankings, cloud functions, shared worlds, user-generated missions, online inventories and server-side authentication all depend on services outside the game file.
Account and licensing services can become the failure point
Even if a download remains listed in your history, the console may need to verify the purchasing account, an entitlement or an encryption key. Losing the account, its recovery method or the ability to complete that check can make a legally purchased game practically inaccessible. Platform terms can also reserve the right to disable online modes. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Software Usage Terms state that online modes may be prevented “even if the offline modes are playable” on specified PlayStation systems.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What the shutdown timeline looks like
| Platform or event | Confirmed change | What continued afterward |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS eShops | New software and DLC sales ended March 27, 2023, at 5:00 p.m. Pacific Time. | Nintendo says previously purchased games and DLC can be redownloaded and updates received for the foreseeable future. |
| Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS software online services | Online play and other functionality using online communication ended April 8, 2024. | Offline portions can remain usable when the game itself does not require a live service. |
| PlayStation services covered by current shutdown notices | A server shutdown can remove a game’s online features. | Offline portions may remain playable, and previously purchased content may remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. |
These examples show why a single “closure date” is insufficient. Sales, redownloads, updates, DLC delivery, account authentication and game servers can each have separate schedules.
Can you still download games you bought?
Often, yes, for a period defined by the platform. The practical test is whether the title is still present in your account’s purchase history and whether the platform’s download servers and authentication systems remain operational. A store’s sales page disappearing does not by itself prove that redownloads have ended.

Redownload access is nevertheless conditional. It can depend on:
- Signing in to the same account that made the purchase.
- Having the console activated or authorized for that account.
- Using a compatible system, storage device and operating-system version.
- Accepting any required license or entitlement check.
- The platform continuing to host the game, updates and DLC files.
Do not wait for a failure to discover which account owns a title. While the store still responds, open the account’s download list, verify that key games appear, and start each download at least once. Keep the console’s activation status and account-recovery methods current.

Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Will an installed game work after the servers shut down?
An installed game can continue to launch if its offline mode is self-contained and does not require a live entitlement check. Installation alone does not preserve every feature.
| Feature | Likely result after a server shutdown | What determines the result |
|---|---|---|
| Offline campaign or local multiplayer | May continue to work. | The game must contain the required content locally and allow offline launch. |
| Online matchmaking and cooperative play | Stops when the game servers or communication service close. | Requires the publisher’s or platform’s live servers. |
| Leaderboards and statistics | Usually stop updating or become unavailable. | Scores and profiles are often stored remotely. |
| Cloud saves | Can no longer sync. | Depends on the platform’s cloud-storage service and account access. |
| User-generated levels or missions | Can disappear or become inaccessible. | Creation, discovery and delivery may all be server-side. |
| Live inventories and virtual currency | May fail even when the game opens. | Balances and item ownership may be validated remotely. |
| Mandatory authentication | Can block launch. | The game or platform may require an entitlement check every time or periodically. |
Test this before closure rather than inferring it from the game’s menu. Disconnect the console from the internet, restart it, launch the title and try the modes you care about. Restore the connection afterward so licenses and saves can synchronize normally.
What happens if you delete a game after the storefront closes?
Deletion removes the local files, not necessarily the purchase entitlement. If redownload servers and account services still operate, you may be able to retrieve the game from your download history. Once those services end, however, deleting the only installed copy can make reinstalls impossible.

The risk also applies to patches and add-ons. A base game may remain on a drive while an essential update, language pack or DLC package is no longer obtainable. Some add-ons use separate licenses or authentication paths, so preserving only the base-game file may not preserve the complete playable product.
Reduce the reinstall risk
- Install important games, updates and owned DLC before any announced cutoff.
- Start each title once while signed in, allowing entitlement checks to complete.
- Run the game with the console offline and record which modes still function.
- Use supported local storage for installed data where the platform permits it.
- Avoid deleting a working installation merely to save space unless you have verified a current redownload path.
A compatible SD card or external drive can provide additional local capacity, but storage does not replace an account license, a required patch or a game server.
Do updates and DLC survive a storefront shutdown?
They may, but they should be treated as separate dependencies. A platform can keep the base game downloadable while withdrawing updates, or retain updates while a DLC entitlement fails. Nintendo’s Wii U and Nintendo 3DS guidance specifically includes software updates in its “for the foreseeable future” redownload statement, but that policy has no universal expiration date.
Downloadable content can also be more fragile than the base game because it may require:
- A separate purchase record or license.
- A particular region, edition or account.
- A server-side activation step.
- A patch that changes the game’s data structure.
- Online services for the content to appear or function.
Install and launch the DLC while services are available. If a game has an offline unlock or local verification option, complete it before the shutdown rather than assuming the add-on will activate later.

Are physical games safer than digital games?
Physical media reduces dependence on a storefront only when a physical edition exists and the disc or cartridge contains what is needed to play. It does not automatically preserve every feature.
| Situation | What physical media helps with | What it does not guarantee |
|---|---|---|
| Complete offline game on the disc or cartridge | Lets you reinstall the local game without downloading the base file from a closed store. | Future patches, DLC, language packs or compatibility with newer hardware. |
| Physical release that is only a license or installer | Provides the original media and may reduce storefront dependence. | Playing without a download, account activation or required update. |
| Game with online-only features | Preserves the local program. | Matchmaking, cloud functions, live inventories and other server features. |
| Digital-only title | Nothing on a cartridge or disc can replace the storefront delivery path. | Redownload access after the platform removes account and download services. |
Check the specific release rather than assuming every cartridge or disc is complete. Some physical products require a large download, an activation code or a day-one patch. A physical copy also cannot restore a publisher’s closed servers.

Nintendo Wii U and Nintendo 3DS
Nintendo’s March 27, 2023 sales cutoff ended new software and DLC purchases, but its support guidance said: “Even after March 27, 2023, and for the foreseeable future, it will still be possible to redownload games and DLC and receive software updates on Wii U and the Nintendo 3DS family of systems.” The same guidance states: “As of April 8, 2024, online play and other functionality that uses online communication has ended for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS family software.”
In practical terms, a purchased title can remain available in the account’s download history while its online modes no longer function. Keep the game installed if it is important, because the redownload policy does not specify a permanent end date.
PlayStation
Current PlayStation support notices distinguish server shutdown from the status of purchased content. A shutdown can remove online features while offline portions remain playable, and previously purchased content may remain downloadable for the foreseeable future. The platform’s software terms also make clear that online access is governed by service rules and can be disabled even when offline play remains.

For any specific PlayStation title, check the game’s shutdown notice and test offline launch on the exact console generation you use. A general platform statement cannot establish whether a particular game has mandatory authentication or a publisher-operated server.
What to do before an announced closure
- Inventory your library. List digital games, DLC, updates and add-ons you would genuinely want to play again.
- Verify ownership. Sign in to the purchasing account, check the download history and confirm the console is activated or authorized.
- Install everything important. Download the base games, patches and DLC while the service is operating.
- Test offline behavior. Disconnect from the internet, reboot and launch each priority title. Try campaigns, local multiplayer and any mode you expect to use.
- Protect account access. Update the email address, password, two-factor method and recovery codes associated with the purchasing account.
- Preserve local storage. Keep installed files on supported internal or removable storage and avoid unnecessary deletion.
- Choose physical editions carefully. For games available on cartridge or disc, confirm that the release contains playable software and is compatible with your hardware and region.
- Save what the game allows locally. Export saves or copy them to supported local storage when the platform provides that option; cloud-only saves depend on continued service.
Common failure cases and the safest response
The game is in your account but the download button fails
Confirm that you are using the original purchasing account, that the console is activated for it and that the system has enough compatible storage. If the platform’s download service has ended, there may be no supported recovery route even though the entitlement remains visible.
The game launches but asks for an online connection
That title has an authentication or service dependency. An installed copy cannot bypass a required server check without violating platform security rules. Look for an officially supported offline mode or an update that removes the dependency; do not attempt to defeat encryption or authentication.
The base game works but DLC is missing
Check the DLC’s separate purchase record, region and license status, then verify that the required update is installed. If the add-on server or entitlement service has closed, the base game may remain playable without that content.
A physical copy still cannot play online
The disc or cartridge supplies local software only. Multiplayer, cloud saves, rankings and live-service inventories still require the relevant servers, accounts and network functionality.
The practical meaning of “owning” a digital game
A digital purchase normally gives you a license to use software under the platform’s account and service terms. It is not the same as possessing an independent copy that can always be transferred, reinstalled or used without verification. The exact rights can vary by platform, title, edition and jurisdiction, and the official policies cited above do not establish a universal legal right to perpetual redownloads worldwide.
Plan around the technical reality: keep important software installed, preserve account access, learn each game’s offline limits and regard online features as services that can end separately from the store.
