When a publisher closes a game’s online services, you do not automatically lose every feature—but you can lose the game entirely. The dividing line is whether the title can authenticate, launch, save progress, and deliver its core mode without the publisher’s servers. Offline campaigns often survive a multiplayer shutdown; online-only or server-authenticated games may become impossible to download or play.
The short answer: offline support determines what survives
A server shutdown affects individual functions, not necessarily the whole game. Ubisoft says that for most of its listed legacy titles, online multiplayer, in-game news, player statistics, and some connected rewards were retired while offline features remained available. Retired Units and Challenges could no longer be completed or received in-game. PlayStation documentation similarly describes cases in which multiplayer ends but specified single-player or offline modes remain playable.
That outcome is not guaranteed. If a game requires a live login, server-side entitlement check, online save system, or continuous connection to run its core loop, the shutdown can remove access altogether. The result depends on the game’s architecture, the platform’s licensing system, the publisher’s shutdown process, and the laws that apply to your purchase.
What a shutdown can remove

A title can therefore be “playable” in one sense and unusable in another. An offline story campaign might launch, while online achievements, user-created levels, cloud saves, and multiplayer matchmaking no longer function.

Three shutdown scenarios you should distinguish
1. A connected feature is retired
The least severe case is removal of an optional service. A racing game may lose leaderboards and online races but still offer its full solo championship. A shooter may retain training missions and local matches while its ranked mode disappears. In this situation, your installed copy remains useful, but the product is permanently different from what was advertised at launch.
2. The game is delisted but existing owners retain access
Delisting removes a title from a storefront. It does not, by itself, revoke every existing license. Depending on the platform, people who bought the game may still be able to download it from their purchase library, install patches, and play offline. New customers cannot buy it, and replacement hardware can expose a re-download problem if the store no longer serves the files.
3. The game depends on a live service
An online-only title can become unusable when its backend closes. The publisher may stop account creation, disable authentication, remove downloads, and revoke digital entitlements. Even a physical copy can fail if its executable requires a server response before starting.

Ubisoft listed The Crew for online-service closure on 31 March 2024. In that case, the consequence went beyond losing multiplayer. A government analysis records that Ubisoft revoked digital licenses after the shutdown, leaving consumers unable to download, install, or play the game. This is the clearest illustration that a purchased digital game is not necessarily a perpetual copy of software: access can remain conditional on a license and an operating service.

The example also shows why “I bought it” and “I can keep using it” are different questions. A storefront receipt proves a transaction, but the usable rights are governed by the platform and publisher terms, technical design, and applicable consumer law. A disc would not solve the problem if the disc still requires authentication or a live backend.
Delisting, service closure, and license revocation are different events
These events are often reported together, but they have distinct effects:
- Delisting: the title is removed from sale. Existing downloads may continue, depending on the store.
- Download shutdown: new installations or re-downloads stop, even for prior purchasers.
- Online-service shutdown: multiplayer, cloud, news, statistics, or server-hosted content ends.
- Authentication shutdown: the game can no longer verify an account or license and may refuse to launch.
- License revocation: the platform or publisher removes the entitlement itself, potentially blocking installation and play.
A game may experience only one of these steps or all of them. The practical question is not simply whether the store page disappeared; it is whether your account can still retrieve the files and whether the installed program can start without contacting a server.
Will a physical disc keep working?
Physical media is helpful only when it contains a complete, playable build. Some discs install a substantial offline game; others are little more than a launcher that downloads the real program, a key that unlocks a digital entitlement, or an outdated build that needs a mandatory patch. If startup, anti-cheat, account login, or content delivery remains server-dependent, the disc cannot recreate the closed service.

Before relying on a disc for long-term access, check whether:
- the campaign launches with the console or PC disconnected from the internet;
- the first installation completes without a publisher account;
- the game runs after removing previously cached credentials;
- essential patches and downloadable content are included on the disc; and
- the platform does not require a separate digital license to start it.
These checks should be performed before buying expansions or spending on virtual items. A disc can protect against a storefront delisting, but it cannot replace a server-side entitlement check.
Do you still “own” a digital game?
In most digital storefronts, the purchase grants a license to access software under stated terms rather than ownership of a transferable physical object. Those terms commonly reserve the ability to modify, suspend, delist, or discontinue online functions. They do not all have the same wording, and the enforceability of a particular term depends on local law and the facts of the shutdown.

- Can you re-download it? Check the platform’s purchase library after delisting.
- Can you install it on new hardware? A re-download entitlement may differ from continued play on an already activated device.
- Can it launch offline? Test after installation while disconnected.
- Will your saves and DLC work? Cloud progression, license checks, and add-ons may have separate dependencies.
- Can you transfer the license? Most platform licenses are account-bound and non-transferable.
The answer can change by platform, edition, region, and account status. Keep the receipt and shutdown notice because those documents establish what was purchased and when access changed.
Other shutdown examples and publisher notices
Ubisoft legacy-service closures
Ubisoft’s support guidance says, “Please note that the offline features of the games are unaffected and remain available to you.” That statement applies to the listed games and their stated offline features, not to every Ubisoft title. The same notice explains that closing services lets the company focus resources on newer or more popular titles. Online functions named in each notice should be treated as a feature-by-feature list, not as a promise that every mode remains.
XDefiant downloads and registrations
Ubisoft stopped new downloads and player registrations for XDefiant on 3 December 2024. A player who had never claimed the game could therefore be blocked before the service’s remaining access window, while an existing installation could have a different status. Always read the exact dates and affected groups in a shutdown notice.

PlayStation service documentation
PlayStation’s gameserver support pages document cases where multiplayer ends but named single-player or offline modes remain. They also state, “Your statutory rights (if any) are not affected; contact PlayStation Support for assistance.” That wording preserves the possibility of a legal remedy without promising one for every purchaser.

How to evaluate a game before buying
Use the following comparison points for any title you expect to keep for years:

Steps to protect your game library
- Read the store page and support FAQ. Search for “online connection required,” third-party account requirements, server dependencies, and shutdown language before purchasing.
- Test offline operation early. Install the game, sign in as required, disconnect the network, and verify that the campaign, saves, and owned DLC launch. Do this before investing in expansions or microtransactions.
- Keep permitted installers and patches. Save legally obtained installers, update files, configuration files, and local saves where the platform permits it. These preserve local data but cannot reproduce a closed authentication server.
- Back up saves in more than one place. Keep a local copy in addition to cloud storage, because cloud synchronization may end with the service.
- Record purchase evidence. Preserve receipts, transaction IDs, account details, edition information, and regional storefront records.
- Prefer preservation-oriented releases for long-term projects. DRM-free installers remove one failure point, but verify the individual title’s features, patches, and license terms.
- Monitor shutdown notices. Download any announced final patch or content while it is still offered, and note the last date for registration, downloads, or refunds.
DRM-free preservation and what it does—and does not—guarantee
GOG’s Preservation Program says it maintains older games, supplies improvements and technical support, and uses DRM-free delivery. A DRM-free installer can continue to run without a recurring activation service, which is valuable when a publisher’s servers disappear. It does not guarantee that every feature is offline, that multiplayer servers will remain, or that a particular edition will always be available. Check each game’s feature list and installation requirements rather than treating a preservation label as a universal promise.
Consumer rights and possible remedies
There is no worldwide rule granting perpetual access to every digital game. Remedies depend on where you live, the contract, the type of failure, and whether the publisher offered a reasonable substitute.

European Union
A European Parliament response concerning The Crew explains that Directive 2019/770 does not set a fixed duration for supplying online games. It also describes possible conformity remedies, including bringing the digital content into conformity, a price reduction, or termination when the provider fails to meet applicable requirements. These are conditional remedies, not an automatic refund for every service closure. The details can depend on the member state, the purchase date, the contract, and whether the defect is legally established.
Australia
An Australian Competition and Consumer Commission analysis discusses circumstances in which terms that let a business sever access may be unfair. That does not mean every shutdown term is invalid; fairness is assessed in context, including transparency, imbalance, harm, and the surrounding consumer guarantees.
Other jurisdictions
Elsewhere, possible claims may involve misleading representations, breach of contract, digital-content guarantees, or unfair terms. Contact the platform or publisher first, then a local consumer-protection agency or qualified adviser. Do not assume that another country’s rule, a social-media campaign, or a physical disc creates a universal right to continued service.
What to do if access has already been revoked
- Confirm whether the problem is a delisting, a download failure, an authentication error, or a full service closure.
- Check the publisher’s notice for the exact date, affected platforms, editions, regions, and refund process.
- Try the platform’s purchase-library re-download and offline launch procedures before deleting an installed copy.
- Capture error messages, receipts, account information, and the dates on which access changed.
- Request a remedy through the platform or publisher and state the purchased edition, price, date, and concrete loss of functionality.
- If the response is inadequate, present the documented timeline to the relevant consumer authority or legal adviser in your jurisdiction.
The practical rule is simple: a game remains durable only to the extent that its essential software, license validation, saves, and content can operate without a service the publisher controls. Check those dependencies before purchase, preserve what the platform legally lets you keep, and treat every online-only game as access to a service rather than a guaranteed permanent copy.
