Usually, your broadband does not stop when its provider is bought or restructures its debt. In a normal acquisition, the existing service and contract generally transfer to the buyer. You should not have to sign a new contract simply because ownership changed.
The outcome is different if the business closes without a buyer. In that case, the provider should tell you when service will end, you must arrange a replacement connection, and you should not be charged an early-termination fee for leaving because the provider ceased trading. The following guidance is UK-focused and reflects Ofcom and company notices available in 2026.
First identify what is actually happening
Headlines often use “takeover”, “administration” and “debt restructuring” interchangeably, but they can produce different customer outcomes. Read the notice from your provider or administrator and identify which of these descriptions applies.
Acquisition of the operating company
A buyer purchases the company that supplies your broadband. The buyer normally takes over the customer contracts, network arrangements, staff and support obligations. Your account may eventually show a different legal company name, but the service should continue while the transfer is completed.

Administration or a debt-free sale
Administration is a formal insolvency process. A sale “out of administration” can transfer selected assets, customers and operations to a buyer while leaving old debts behind. That changes who owns or runs the service; it does not automatically switch off the network.
Asset or customer transfer
A buyer may purchase only particular networks, premises, customers or systems. Your retail broadband contract can remain with the same trading name even though another company operates the underlying access network. Conversely, the retail provider and billing platform can change while the physical line remains the same.
Closure with no buyer
If no rescue or sale is completed, the provider can cease trading. Ofcom says customers should be told when service will stop. You then need to order a connection from another provider rather than waiting for an automatic transfer.

Will your broadband stop during a takeover?
In a straightforward acquisition, interruption is not the expected result. Ofcom’s out-of-business guidance, updated 15 September 2026, says: “In most cases, your existing contract should transfer to the new provider.” A takeover announcement by itself is therefore not a cancellation notice and does not require you to place a new order.

There are three practical continuity outcomes:
- Unchanged service: the connection, router, price and contract remain as they are while ownership changes behind the scenes.
- Managed migration: the buyer moves customers to a different billing platform, network or support operation. You should receive instructions and any required notice before a material change.
- Planned stop: if the business cannot be rescued, the provider states when service will end so customers can switch.
There is no published statistic that predicts how often takeovers interrupt UK broadband. Available official material is case-specific, so treat a sudden outage as a service fault to report, not as proof that the acquisition has cancelled your contract.
Does the buyer have to honour your contract?
Normally, yes. The transfer of ownership does not by itself create a new minimum term or cancel the agreement you accepted with the original provider. Keep your original contract summary, terms, bills and any offer emails so you can compare what you were promised with what you are later asked to accept.
If the new provider proposes a change that does not benefit you, Ofcom’s contract-change guidance normally requires at least one month’s notice and a right to leave without an early-termination charge. Changes that are exclusively beneficial, purely administrative with no negative effect, or imposed directly by law are treated differently.
Changes that should trigger a careful comparison
- Monthly price, discounts or the date a promotional rate ends.
- Advertised and minimum guaranteed speed, data allowances or traffic restrictions.
- Length of the minimum term and any new renewal date.
- Bundled phone, television, security or other services.
- Router ownership, replacement fees, return obligations and compatibility.
- Billing frequency, payment method, direct-debit origin and online-account access.
- Customer-service contact details, complaint routes and cancellation instructions.
An acquisition announcement alone is not evidence that your individual contract has changed. Ask the provider to identify the exact clause, date and financial effect of any variation.

What can change even when the line keeps working?
Continuity of connectivity does not mean every customer-facing system stays identical. A buyer may replace the account portal, invoice format, direct-debit name or support telephone number. Verify changes through a contact method published on the provider’s official website or in a previous bill before disclosing payment details. Do not assume a new direct debit or portal is fraudulent, but do not accept an unsolicited payment request without checking it.
The physical access network may also remain unchanged while the company operating it changes. In other cases, a managed migration can require a new router, an engineer visit or a short service window. The notice should explain whether equipment is retained, replaced or returned and whether installation charges apply. If it does not, ask in writing before agreeing to a new term.
What happened in the 2026 TalkTalk administration?
On 5 October 2026, BT announced that it had acquired TalkTalk Telecommunications Limited and PlatformX Communications Limited out of the administration of TalkTalk Group on a debt-free basis. BT said the transaction was intended to protect continuity for 2.5 million customers.

Ofcom told TalkTalk customers that they remained customers and did not need to do anything differently. Its notice said there would be no change to price, contract or access to billing during the transition. This is an example of a debt-free sale in which service and customer relationships continue under a new owner rather than ending on the administration date.

What happened in the G.Network restructuring?
G.Network announced on 24 March 2026 that it had reorganised through administration under FitzWalter Capital and would continue on a debt-free footing. It described a central-London full-fibre footprint passing more than 420,000 premises.
The relevant lesson is not that every administration produces the same result, but that administration can be used to preserve an operating network and customer service. Check your own provider’s notice for the legal entity now responsible for supply, the billing arrangements and any migration timetable.
What if the provider goes bust without a buyer?
If the provider closes, Ofcom says it should tell customers when service will stop. Order a replacement broadband service as soon as you receive that date: installation queues can be longer than the remaining service period, especially where an engineer visit is needed.
You should not owe an early-termination charge for leaving because the provider ceased trading. You may still receive a final bill for service already supplied or for equipment that the contract lawfully requires you to return. Keep evidence of the closure notice and check the final account rather than cancelling a legitimate payment blindly.

Keeping an existing landline number might not be possible after a closure. Ask the replacement provider about number portability before the old service ends. If the number supports a medical alarm, lift, monitored security system or another critical service, contact the equipment provider as well as the broadband company; a broadband replacement alone may not preserve every telephone-based service.

- Classify the event. Save the notice and mark whether it describes an acquisition, administration, asset or customer transfer, managed migration or closure.
- Confirm the responsible company. Establish who now supplies the connection, sends bills, collects payment and handles faults. Use an official channel if account details or bank instructions change.
- Freeze your evidence. Download the contract summary, tariff, bills, speed promises, minimum-term date, equipment records and every takeover email or letter.
- Compare proposed terms line by line. Check price, discount expiry, speed, minimum period, bundles, router obligations, billing and cancellation process against the old agreement.
- Record problems. Keep outage times, speed-test results, missed appointments, complaint references and the name of each person who assists you.
- Challenge a worsening variation. Ask the provider to confirm the one-month notice period and penalty-free exit described by Ofcom when a non-beneficial change is proposed.
- Plan a switch if service will end. Order early, ask about installation timing and decide whether you need a temporary mobile hotspot while waiting. Takeover rules do not require any particular hardware.
- Escalate unresolved complaints. Complete the provider’s complaints and deadlock process. If it does not resolve the issue, use an Ofcom-approved alternative-dispute-resolution scheme: CISAS or the Communications Ombudsman.
How to decide whether to stay or switch

Why regulators and government may intervene
A broadband insolvency can affect more than individual households. The UK Government said a sudden collapse could disrupt vital phone and broadband services and put vulnerable customers and public services at risk. Parliamentary concerns included emergency services, hospitals, public bodies and medical alarms.
For that reason, Ofcom, government departments and competition authorities may monitor a rescue, impose conditions or seek continuity arrangements. Intervention does not guarantee that every contract, price or telephone number will remain unchanged; it is intended to reduce disorderly loss of essential communications.

Tell the provider about circumstances that make an interruption especially harmful, such as dependence on a medical alarm, disability-related communication needs, lack of mobile coverage or responsibility for someone medically vulnerable. Ask what priority contact, payment flexibility or continuity support is available and record the request.
If service is ending, arrange alternatives for every critical function rather than relying only on broadband. Confirm how emergency calling works after a move, whether a landline number can be ported and whether any alarm or telecare equipment needs a separate upgrade.
Questions to ask the provider
- Which legal entity is now my supplier?
- Does my existing contract continue, and what is my current minimum-term end date?
- Will my price, speed, bundle, router or billing method change?
- Is a migration required, and when could there be downtime?
- What is the complaint reference and which ADR scheme applies?
- If service is ending, what is the exact stop date and can my telephone number be ported?
The safest approach is to treat ownership change as a reason to verify your records, not as an automatic cancellation. Continue paying valid bills, protect your evidence, challenge any adverse contract variation promptly and arrange a replacement connection early if an official closure date is announced.
